V’al hanissim, v’al hapurkan, V’al hag’vurot v’al hateshu’ot,V’al hamilchamot she’asita la’avoteinu bayamim haheim, bazman hazeh.

And [we thank You] for the miracles, for the redemption, for the mightydeeds, for the saving acts, and for the wonders which You have wrought

for our ancestors in those days, at this time—

We add these magical words to our Amidah and Birkat Hamazon (grace after meals) duringa few holidays, one of which is Hanukkah. This prayer evokes a sense of miraculous wonderin God. God performs miracles every day, but it is on certain special occasions we are left in

awe of the omnipotent power of God. On a weekly basis, I have had the pleasure of working

with our young students and seeing them grow. I thankGod every day for the miracle of children in this buildingand their eagerness to learn. From the two-year-olds inthe Nursery School all the way to my B’nai Mitzvah stu-dents, I feel blessed that I have the opportunity to touchtheir lives with music and Judaism. Children keep usyoung and we can learn through their eyes about thedaily miracles that adults tend to overlook. I urge you totry to see the world through the eyes of our children and

learn to appreciate the simple things, which can be the most miraculous. I always ask myB’nai Mitzvah students what they are most excited about as we begin their journey to adult-hood, and one student in particular blew me away with his response. “I’m excited to learnthe tools needed to make the world a better place.”

RABBI ANDREW WARMFLASH

The Real Hanukkah MiracleHundreds of years after the Maccabees defeated the Syrian Greeks who were oppressing our people, the Talmud posed a question: MaiHanukkah? Why do we celebrate Hanukkah? The answer it gives is thefamiliar story: When our ancestors recaptured the Temple, they foundthat there was only one small cruse of oil to rekindle the light in thesanctuary. Miraculously, it burned for eight days.

There are several problems with this story: First, it isn’t in any of thesources that predate the Talmud which all give other reasons why the

holiday lasts for eight days and candles are lit each night. Second, the prayer we add to ourservices each time we say the Amidah during Hanukkah makes no mention of the oil. In-stead, it thanks God for the miraculous victory of the few over the many, those who upheldthe Torah over those who sought to destroy it.

Finally, the oil miracle is rather paltry. What was so important about the fact that the oillasted 8 days? If it hadn’t, it would not have been a tragedy. Our ancestors would simplehave waited until new oil could be produced and relit the light.

All of this suggests that the miracle of the oil probably didn’t literally take place. So, whydo we light the menorah? I think it symbolizes the true miracle of Hanukkah: We are theoil! Our people’s light, and the light of the Torah we live by, were both nearly extinguishedby a powerful enemy who sought to destroy us.

By any reasonable standard, our light should have burned out a long time ago. Yet, withGod’s help, we survived and thrived while our foes have vanished from the stage of history. This is a true miracle, one that has been repeated again and again throughout history. Itcontinues to this day.

When we light the menorah, and display it in our windows, it is a sign that proclaims tothe world that this great miracle continues. It declares: This is a Jewish house. We are stillhere, and our light will continue to grow brighter with each passing day.

Happy Hanukkah!

new adult B’Nai Mitzvah classes!

Gratitude‘Tis the season to be grateful. The holidays of Thanksgiving andHanukkah are upon us. I just love this time of year. Right after the HighHolidays, I begin to thumb through my cookbooks, look at the picturesof delicious food that I saved on Pinterest, and rummage through myhandwritten recipes. My Thanksgiving menu begins to take shape andit goes through several revisions before the big day. Throughout themonth of November, I’m busy figuring out how I’m going to get a largeturkey in the oven and still have space for all the side dishes. I love

when everybody arrives eager for the glass of hot apple cider which has become an essentialpart of our Thanksgiving tradition.

Shortly after Thanksgiving, I get busy putting together my shopping list for Hanukkahgifts. Believe me when I say that I should take stock out in Amazon Prime, because so manypackages are delivered to my door before Hanukkah. I love it!

But truth be told, it’s not so much the gifts or the parties or the big family dinners that Ilove most. As the days get shorter and we are enveloped in darkness, the religious traditionsof the world have found ways to illuminate our environment. Despite the darkness and thesadness that sometimes comes along with it, we set aside special time to say thank you.Thank you for our families. Thank you for the miracles that have sustained our people.

There is just so much to be thankful for, starting with waking up in the morning andbeing granted one more day above ground. I’m so grateful for the abundance in my life, formy husband and kids, for my home, and for our community. I’m grateful for our minyanthat provides me with the opportunity to say thanks on a daily basis. The spiritual teacherEkhart Tolle writes: If the only prayer you ever say is ‘THANK YOU,’ that will be enough. I thinkhe’s right.

Thank You . . .

From the President

AUDREY POLINSKY

The end of the year happens twice for Jews. Between the two new yearsthat we celebrate, there is certainly time to take stock of the future plansand current accomplishments of our synagogue. We are examining ourcongregational life closely, studying everything from membership anddues structure, fundraising, programming, and continuing improve-ments to the physical plant. Most importantly, the HERJC Vision Campaign, Charting Our Future, was launched last spring. The Vision2017 meetings, small group discussions where our members sharedtheir thoughts about what they would like to see at HERJC that would

strengthen our community, began and will continue, making sure every member’s voice isheard. Please call the office if you would like to participate.

We have had major accomplishments this year: the expansion of the Dinner Dance intoa Gala, excellent enrollments in our Nursery School and our Jewish Building Blocks pro-gram, and dramatic changes in the Religious School and Youth programs. Our ReligiousSchool now includes options that will allow students to individualize their programs. OurYouth Group is one of the first in Nassau County to team up with Hofstra University Hillelto run our Youth Program. We anticipate that our new caterer will start on January 1. Improvements in the physical plant may seem less significant, but are essential to the lifeof the community: a new boiler in the school wing, a refinished floor in the gym, and theinstallation of energy-efficient light bulbs.

As we look forward to the new year that begins in January, we also remember the newyear of 5777 that we celebrated in October. Yasher Koach to Rabbi Warmflash, HazzanStreigold and David Goldman for leading us in prayer during the High Holidays andthroughout the year. Thank you to all those who participated in the services, making themso meaningful. It takes a tremendous amount of effort to prepare for our High Holiday serv-ices. None of it would have been possible without James Reynolds and his crew, HelaineRonen and her staff, Norman Doctor and the Honors committee, Sheldon Gross and thegreeters, and Marvin Welkowitz, Master of Sound. Finally, thanks to all those who madeKol Nidre pledges. We appreciate it!

We have a great momentum going, and many good things to report. There is much leftto accomplish, and we look to each member to help us continue to grow and improve.

Curious about our committees?

The School and Youth Board

The HERJC School and Youth Board oversees the program-ming and curriculum of the Nursery School, ReligiousSchool, and Youth Groups. We consult with the administra-tors of the different youth programs and provide feedback. Our group consists of a diverse selection of congregants, with the school section co-chaired by Rachel Cooper andElaine Garver, and the Youth Group section chaired byTamar Barbash. Here are some of the recent programs thatwe have discussed:

NURSERY SCHOOL – Cheryl Karp, Director

Hooray for Hebrew is a new multi-sensory program thatintroduces Hebrew vocabulary to the children each weekthrough craft, story, and song. It will involve not only ourmusic teacher, but the Rabbi and Hazzan as well.

PJ Library events are ongoing. There will be a specialevent where we will be hand delivering our 2,000th bookto one of our families. Our first major PJ Library event of the year was “Pizza in the Hut” where the children experienced the holiday of Sukkot and heard interactivedrum tales.

Our new Science Room is being refurbished and we hopeto have the grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony inthe beginning of November. This room will be filled withinteractive science activities for the children to explore.

Our Art Program continues to evolve each year and thisyear we will do an in-depth study of the Masters of GreatArt, early childhood style.

By the end of the year, we are hoping to have at least one,if not two, Smart Boards in place, as well as providingsome teacher training.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL – David Woolfe, Director

Our new 2 + 1 Enrichment Program began this year.Much of last year was spent discussing the new curricu-lum and how to implement the changes. The program is designed to maintain our award-winning “Frameworkfor Excellence” school while meeting the needs of our students and families.

Our Building Blocks Program, pre-k through first grade, meets on Sundays and explores Jewish values, holidays,Hebrew, and prayer.

Students in 2nd through 7th grades meet Sundays andTuesdays with an optional enrichment program offeredon Thursdays. The core curriculum consists of holidaysand rituals, Hebrew, prayer proficiency, and foundationstories and narratives of our tradition. Students attendingon Thursday have a unique opportunity to enjoy bothcore enrichment classes and electives.

We continue to offer many special activities and programssuch as: a High Holiday Program, including services for3rd/4th grades and 5th/6th grades, breakfast in the Sukkahwith the families, Family Shabbat services on every thirdShabbat, Family projects for each grade, including the Wim-ple Project, the Yad Project, and the Shofarot Project, theHanukkah Show, the Purim Carnival, and Model PassoverSeders.

YOUTH GROUPS – Rabbi Dave Siegel, Executive Director of Hofstra Hillel

HERJC continues to offer an array of programming for allages.

Chaverim – 2nd-4th grade, meets Tuesdays, 6:00-7:30 pmKadima – 5th-7th grade, meets Tuesdays, 6:00-7:30 pmUSY – 8th-12th grade, meets Mondays, 7:00-8:30 pm

In the beginning of 2016, we established a new relation-ship with Hofstra Hillel to run our youth programs. Theyouth groups are led by Rabbi Dave Siegel, Executive Direc-tor of Hofstra Hillel. One of the major goals was to create aprogram that highlighted both the local and regional aspectsof our youth programs. The HERJC Youth Staff was ex-tremely active on divisional and regional levels.

We had a successful start to the year with a Welcome BackBarbecue on September 13th. The kids shared a meal, playedgames, and got to know the Hofstra Hillel staff.

Please contact Rachel Cooper, Elaine Garver or Tamar Barbash at the Religious School office (599-0424) if you areinterested in joining The School and Youth Board!

You may find the following advice from Rabbi Warmflash helpful in planning a Shiva call:

If you are unsure about whether you are close enough to the mourners for it to be ap-propriate to visit, by all means go. The mourners will be touched that you came evenif they don’t know you well.

It isn’t our tradition to visit on Shabbat (beginning a few hours before Friday eveningor during daylight hours on Saturday), or during meal times. Bringing or sending flowersis also not done. Instead, consider donating tzedakah in memory of the deceased.

Shiva can be a tiring and emotional time for mourners. While they will appreciate ashort and meaningful visit, they may need private time and more rest than usual. Pleasebe mindful of the hours that families specify for visits and don’t stay late into thenight.

Visitors to a Shiva house will usually find the front door unlocked. It is customary toenter without knocking or ringing the door bell.

Sit with the mourners to share words of consolation. But, try not to monopolize thechairs next to them as others will want to sit with them, too. If there is no one elseat the Shiva house when you arrive, try to stay with the mourners until the nextvisitor arrives.

Although you may have come because of your relationship with one of the mourners, try to try to find ways to acknowledge and include the others who may be present(children, grandchildren, siblings, parents, etc.).

A house of mourning is not usually the right place for discussions about the weather, vacations, politics, sports or other features of our normal lives. It is best to allow themourners to define the conversation and to encourage them to share memories. When possible, share your own memories of the deceased. Don’t worry too muchabout saying the wrong thing. Remember that, regardless of what you say, it isyour presence that will probably mean the most.

Taking leave of a mourner can be difficult because it’s sometimes hard to find adequatewords for the moment. Our tradition offers a statement that is widely used and expresses our connection to the Jewish people and our understanding that losscomes to us all. Whether you say it in Hebrew or English, you can feel confident thatthis parting expression is appropriate and that it will be received as a meaningful expression of concern. It is also fine just to say the first three words in the Hebrewor to only use the English.

המקום ינחם אתכם בתוך שאר אבלי ציון וירושליםHa-ma-kom ye-na-chem et-chem

May God comfort you among the mourners of our people.

The Lighting of Hanukkah CandlesThe celebration of Hanukkah begins on the twenty-fifth day of the Hebrew month of Kislev. Onthis day, a small group of Maccabean soldiers were victo rious over the great Greek army, andthe desecrated Temple was rededicated to the service of God. We light candles for eight days, beginning on the evening of December 24, in commemoration of the famous miracle of the oil. After the Maccabean victory, one single crucible of oil (enough to light the Temple Menorah foronly one day) was found. Miraculously, they say, it lasted for eight days, long enough for newconsecrated oil to be prepared.

The Hanukkah menorah (Hanukkia) has nine candles, eight of which represent the eightdays of Hanukkah. The ninth candle, the Shamash, is used to light the other candles and usuallytowers above the rest.

The Hanukkah lights may be lit by any member of the family. In many families, each member lights his or her ownHanukkia.

Baruch ata Adonai, Elohaynu Melech Haolam, asher kidshanu b’mitsvotav, v’tsivanu, l’hadlik ner shel Hanukkah.

Baruch ata Adonai, Elohaynu Melech Haolam, she-asa nisim la-a-vo-tenu, ba-yamim, ha-hem bazman ha-zeh.

Baruch ata Adonai, Elohaynu Melech Haolam, she-he-che-yanu v’ki-y’manu, v’higianu lazman ha-zeh.

We praise You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with Your Mitzvot and commanded us to kindle the Hanukkah lights.

We praise You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who performed wondrous deeds for our ancestors in days of old at this season.

We praise You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who has given us life, sustained us and enabled us to reach this season.

NIGHTLY BLESSINGS

TO BE ADDED ON THE FIRST NIGHT AFTER THE OTHER 2 BLESSINGS

ORDER OF LIGHTING THE HANUKKAH CANDLESThe candles are placed from right to left, as one faces the Hanukkia (as Hebrew is read). But they are lit from left to right,so that on each night, the new candle is given special welcome by being lit first. Only the Shamash is used to light the othercandles.

The candles should be lit as soon as possible once it is dark. On Friday night, however, the Hanukkah candles are lit BEFORE the Shabbat candles. At the close of Shabbat, the Havdalah cere mony precedes the lighting of the Hanukkia.

Join Rabbi Warmflash and other members of our synagogue family at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to explore the Met’snew exhibit, Jerusalem 1000-1400: Every People Under Heaven.

This exhibit illuminates the key role that the Holy City played inshaping the art of the period from 1000 to 1400. In these centuries,Jerusalem was home to more cultures, religions, and languagesthan ever before, and it was a constant source of inspiration thatresulted in art of great beauty and fascinating complexity.

WE WILL MEET AT 1:30 PM OUTSIDE THE EXHIBIT.

In conjunction with the exhibit Rabbi Warmflash and his wife, Beth Heit will be teaching a special class entitled

As we begin the last two months of 2016,many of us cannot believe how quicklythe year has passed. The stores have hadan abundance of pumpkin spice productssince the summer. Have you tried any newones? I have been preparing winter squashsince September. The month of yom tovended on October 25. This year Hanuk -kah does not begin until the evening of

December 24.Most of November is the Jewish month of Cheshvan, which

has no Jewish holidays. It does include the yahrzeit of the ma-triarch Rachel. After Rachel died giving birth to Binyamin, shewas buried on the roadside in Bethlehem. For generations,Rachel’s Tomb has served as a place of pilgrimage and prayer, especially for women having difficulty conceiving. The 11thof Cheshvan is referred to as Jewish Mother’s Day. It is the 41stday from Rosh Hashanah. The Hebrew word “em,” is spelledwith an aleph and a mem, and it has the numerical value of41. Cheshvan also contains the yahrzeits of other importantwomen in Jewish history including Emma Lazarus, mostwidely known as the author of the famous poem on the baseof the Statue of Liberty and Hannah Senesh, author, Zionist, and war hero.

November and December bring many interesting things: Iam looking forward to the Torah portions, which come fromthe first book of the Torah, Genesis, or Beresheit, that are readon Shabbat,. They range from Noach through Miketz, the storyof Joseph’s return to his family and his people after his broth-ers come to Egypt during the famine. Also, we start the firstweekend of November by changing our clocks to standardtime. Beginning with the second Shabbat of November, welight candles after 4 pm and Shabbat ends after 5 pm.

Sisterhood will be busy in November and December. Webegin the month with our Warm Clothing Drive on Sunday

Mitzvah Garden Harvest

“Why are those carrots covered with dirt?” “We just pulled them out of the ground, that’s why.” “Why is there a bug on that tomato?” “It must be hungry.” This was someof the conversation at the Nursery School Mitzvah Garden harvest in September. Im-portant lessons on planting and harvesting, Tikkun Olam (caring for the earth), andthe Jewish value of Tzedakah (charity) were put into practice by our Nursery Schoolclasses as they plucked tomatoes from the vine and carrots from the ground, and gath-ered them for the soup kitchen at the Far Rockaway Outreach Center.

Dr. Larry Gottlieb is the strong backbone of this ongoing project, first created inApril, 2011. Four raised garden beds were created from plots of land in the back yard

of HERJC that had not previously been cultivated in any way.Planting was begun immediately, including lettuce, peas, po-tatoes, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Carrots, beans, and cabbagehave been added.

The garden, which was expanded in 2014, is entirely or-ganic, with no insecticides or sprays employed. As the gardengrew, a sprinkler system was installed. Signs in Hebrew andEnglish were attached to the fence. And the group of peoplefrom the congregation working to make sure that the garden was a success also expanded: In additionto Dr. Larry, they are: Rita Gottlieb, Heidi Kreit, Joe Sklar, Sandy Feit, Bruce Drantch, Sy Zaret, andBruce Trauner.

The Mitzvah Garden is so much more than just good intentions: The harvest statistics are trulyastounding. In 2012, the garden produced 121 pounds of produce. This year, we are up to morethan 600 pounds! HERJC shares most of the produce with the soup kitchen, but the Nursery Schoolchildren also get the benefit of the freshly picked produce: last week, the students had carrots, cherry

tomatoes, and fresh string beans added to their lunch.Future plans for the garden include increasing participation by the congregation as a whole, as well as involving more of

the older children in the Garden. If you are interested, please contact the HERJC office (599-2634).

The great challah bakeNovember 10 at the Sands in Atlantic Beach

This year’s Great Challah Bake: Long Island Style will continue an international tradition of challah bakes all overthe world, where women of all Jewish affiliations can get together, learn to make challah, and share the experienceof making bread for their families. Last year, 1,400 women gathered for this amazing event.

A speaker at last year’s event, quoted in the Jewish Week, said that the Bake was about “discovering the joy ofbeing a Jewish woman...The tradition of challah goes back 3,700 years!”

We would like to have a group of HERJC women going to this event,so that we can learn important baking skills and add to the deliciousmeals (and fragrant kitchens!) that we have on Shabbat.

There is an ancient Babylonian tale thattells the story of Rabbi Judah the Princeand his friendship with the Roman Em-peror Antoninus. It seems that one daythe emperor invited the Rabbi to eat din-ner at the palace. The Rabbi ate fruitsand pastries the likes of which he hadnever tasted. The following Friday night, the Rabbi invited the emperor to his

house to eat dinner. They ate soup, roasted chicken, stewedvegetables, pastries, and wine. The emperor thought it wasbetter than any meal he had ever tasted. The Rabbi invitedhim back the following Wednesday night for dinner. TheRabbi came back, expecting a meal even grander than the

last. The Rabbi served the same exact meal: soup, roastedchicken, stewed vegetables, pastries, and wine, but some-how the meal wasn’t nearly as good as the previous week’s.When the emperor asked why the meal was not as deliciousas it had been the last time, the Rabbi replied that there wasa special spice that had made the food taste better the weekbefore. The emperor offered to search the world for thespice (since he could certainly afford to do so), but theRabbi told him that the special spice could not be bought. The special spice that was missing was “Shabbat.”

On November 18th, the Hewlett-East Rockaway JewishCentre Nursery School invites you to join us for our veryfirst “Tot Shabbat.” At 6PM, we will have a wonderful din-ner together, and that special spice that Emperor Antoninustasted many years ago will certainly be present throughoutour meal. Join us for a special child-oriented Shabbat serv-ice and help us welcome in Shabbat together. Please makesure to come and help spice up our evening.

religious schoolDAVID WOOLFE

A long time ago, I was fortunate to be the recipient of a scholarship fromthe Nelson Glueck School of Biblical Archeology, which paid me to flyback and forth from Los Angeles and to spend several seasons workingat a couple of incredible sites in Israel: Tel Dan in the north and Aroerin the south. The experiences I enjoyed on those sites – from duckingkatyusha rockets, to excavating the site the Bible describes as the north-ern point of David’s Kingdom (“mi Beer Sheva ad Dan”), to finding Elizabeth – continue to influence who I am today.

But like all things from “long ago,” those seasons on the dig have oftenfaded in my thoughts. They were brought back in vivid detail, however, when I read justrecently about the 1970 discovery of a “charred object” found at Ein-Gedi. It turns out thatthat object, found almost fifty years ago and thought to be impossible to read, is a fragmentfrom the Book of Leviticus. The charred fragment, burned during the destruction of Ein-Gedi sometime around 600 C.E., was found inside the community’s synagogue, but itssignificance remained unknown and presumably unknowable until modern technology in

the form of CT scans and 3D digital imagingallowed experts to determine just how remark-able the find was. It is a piece of one of the oldest known copies of the Torah ever discov-ered. Remarkably, or not, the verses on thefragment are exactly the same as the verses inour own Torah scrolls.

I’ll leave the discussion as to whether thisagreement is due to God’s hand or extremelydisciplined human codification to the rabbisand experts. What I do think is important, par-ticularly as I write this approaching the HighHoliday period and with Hanukkah just beforeus, is what it says about the power of historyand tradition, of belonging, of community.

I so often read about the sense of rootlessness in our modern society. As Jews, we areanything but rootless. Our roots are deep and strong, extending – without interruption –through centuries. History has not always or often been kind to us, but those roots have an-chored us to tradition, to meaning, to faith, to hope, and to each other.

I felt that rootedness viscerally when I worked the dirt in Israel. It is part of what I hopeyour sons and daughters get in our Religious School: that very real connection to a tradition,to deep roots and the hope of a glorious future.

So we have those long, deep roots. But sometimes it takes the gifts that modernity bringsto know how to appreciate and find meaning in those roots. Judaism, our faith and tradition,is given meaning over and over and over again by our own insights and experiences.

In Religious School, when we learn about Judaism we do not learn about the past. We learn about now, about ourselves and our world and how the past roots us in time andmeaning.

Best wishes for a wonderful Thanksgiving and a meaningful Hanukkah!
