ABOUT NMMU

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) is a new generation university, distinguished by a wide range of study options and access routes open to students. With 415 programmes from certificate through to doctoral level across 200 different career fields, NMMU truly is a comprehensive university. Founded on more than a century of quality higher education, NMMU nurtures innovation, fosters creativity, embraces technology and develops people to meet the challenges of tomorrow. NMMU is a product of a merger of the University of Port Elizabeth and the PE Technikon in 2005. Prior to such a merger, the Vista University campus of Port Elizabeth was incorporated into the former University of Port Elizabeth. The university has a strong track record of research, working extensively in partnership with business and industry, making NMMU a valued contributor to the socioeconomic development of the region and beyond. This year (2016), the university has 26602 students and close to 3990 permanent and contract staff, based on six campuses in Nelson Mandela Bay and George. Leaders NMMU’s Vice-Chancellor is Professor Derrick Swartz, the Chancellor is Ms Santie Botha and the Chair of Council is Judge Ronnie Pillay. Location Five of NMMU’s campuses are in Nelson Mandela Bay and one is in George on the Garden Route. The six campuses are: South Campus in Summerstrand (within a 720-hectare private nature reserve) North Campus in Summerstrand Second Avenue Campus, home to the new “green” Business School, in Summerstrand Bird Street Campus which will be a new postgraduate arts hub in Central Missionvale Campus in Missionvale George Campus in George Facilities and supportive teaching and learning environment NMMU is privileged to have outstanding facilities. All students have access to well-equipped laboratories, some of which are open 24/7, and free Wi-Fi throughout all its campuses. All the lecture halls are equipped with the latest technology and students have the opportunity of using additional e-learning tools online. The campus libraries and information services network offers a state-of-the-art integrated online system. There are cafeterias, food courts and coffee shops. A range of opportunities are provided to enhance the academic success of students. These include a first-year orientation programme, peer-facilitated learning opportunities (eg, Supplemental Instruction, e-PAL, tutorials, practicals, mentor programmes, ‘Keys to Success’ workshops and online resources). NMMU also promotes both in and outside of the class learning to enhance holistic student development. To recognise the learning that takes place outside of the class, NMMU has developed an innovative, electronic co-curricular record system. The University also offers the finest sporting facilities in the Eastern Cape and numerous venues for conferences, meetings and other special events. Faculties NMMU has seven faculties. Biodiversity conservation and restoration Coastal marine and shallow water ecosystems Cyber citizenship Democratisation, conflict and poverty Earth Stewardship Science Health and wellbeing Humanising pedagogies Manufacturing technology and engineering Nanoscale characterisation and development of strategic materials Science, Mathematics and Technology Education for Society Strategic energy technologies Sustainable human settlement development and management Sustainable local economic development Research and Engagement entities NMMU has 30 focused institutes, centres and units that exist over and above the formal academic structures that are aimed at promoting research, technology transfer and innovation. They include the likes of InnoVenton; NMMU’s Institute for Chemical Technology and Downstream Chemicals; eNtsa, an institute that focuses on seeking solutions through engineering; Earth Stewardship Science Research Institute (ESSRI); and Institute for Coastal and Marine Research. Many are award-winning entities. The University also has a further 12 engagement institutes, centres and units and two clinics serving society in various initiatives. ‘Green’ endeavours In line with its value of respect for the natural environment, NMMU is involved in a large number of “green” initiatives that will not only reduce its own carbon footprint but is also assisting others in seeking renewable energy resource solutions. The university’s new Business School, for example, was the first in the country to be awarded four-star “green” accreditation for a public and education building by the Green Building Council of South Africa in 2013. The “green” agenda is supported by the Centre for Renewable Energy, which is recognised as a research leader in the field. International links Just over 8% of NMMU’s student body comes from 64 different countries outside of South Africa. The Office for International Education fosters relationships and manages inter-institutional linkages to enrich both NMMU staff and students. These partnerships also foster our growing research. NMMU regularly sends students abroad. Reasons to be proud: NMMU’s diversity and multiculturalism. Our African students alone come from 34 countries on the continent. The High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) Centre, which opened in 2011, is the

only place in Africa where scientists can view atoms in line with NMMU’s growing prominence for nanoscience.

More than 40% of NMMU academic staff have doctoral degrees when compared to the national average of 33%.

New infrastructure like the iconic Engineering block on North Campus and the new Human Movement Science Building complete with a 100m research sprint track on South Campus.

NMMU has excellent links with industry and business, particularly within the pharmacy, tourism and automotive industries.

NMMU’s ongoing education partnership with Fifa, as one of only two presenters in Africa of an international sports management programme through the Centre International d’Etude du Sport (CIES).

The success of being the first student racing team from Africa to successfully compete in the Formula Student event in Germany. NMMU students designed and built a racing car to exacting specifications.

The university was selected in 2012 to facilitate the country’s first electric e-mobility programme and technical centre, called the uYilo e-mobility programme.

NMMU has extensive expertise within the field of friction processing which has resulted in numerous national awards for the patented technology, WeldCore®. This technology has also aligned the strategic partnership between NMMU and Eskom.

NMMU’s accounting and pharmacy students who continue to produce top results in their national external examinations.

NMMU’s international award-winning choir which continues to perform around the globe to wide acclaim.

ACADEMIC DRESS

Special academic attire was designed for office bearers at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University to be worn at prestigious academic events like graduation. Each outfit – from that of the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor to those of the Executive Deans – has been especially selected to signify a particular office, in keeping with attire worn by academics at leading universities throughout the world. The gowns, caps and hoods of NMMU graduates were similarly inspired and are explained in detail below.

Academic dress for graduates at NMMU is as follows: Doctoral degrees Gown: Cardinal red polyester cashmere gown with long pointed sleeves pleated up with blue cord and

button and lined with blue satin with 125mm facings and a blue collar. Hood: Full shape hood in cardinal red polyester cashmere lined with faculty colour satin and edged

around the cowl with 75mm faculty colour ribbon with 15mm blue ribbon overlaid central. 50mm wide straight neckband in cardinal red polyester cashmere, 25mm faculty colour ribbon in centre of neckband with 15mm blue ribbon overlaid central to faculty ribbon.

Cap: Round doctor's bonnet in black velvet with faculty colour cord and tassel. Master's degrees Gown: Black gown, long pointed sleeves pleated up with blue twisted double cord and button. Similar

cord detail is used. Hood: Full shape blue hood lined faculty colour satin and edged around the outside of the cowl with

75mm faculty colour with ribbon. 50mm straight neckband in blue with 25mm faculty colour ribbon centred.

Cap: Black mortarboard with blue tassel. Postgraduate diplomas Gown: Black gown, long pointed sleeves pleated up with blue twisted double cord and button. Similar

cord detail. Hood: Blue simple shape hood lined silver grey satin. Straight neckband with 15mm faculty ribbon on

top edge of neckband and around cowl. 15mm silver grey ribbon on bottom edge of neckband and around cowl spaced 20mm away from the faculty colour.

In so doing, the end-users of technology are faced with the challenge of having to make decisions that they traditionally regarded as being specific to information-technology practitioners. As is the nature of a technology-centric organisation, the end-user has to complete several tasks related to his/her duties, using different end-user programs. User studies have shown that the user remains with a negative experience, and usually chooses the easier way of responding to security interactions only, which results in security breaches. This thesis contributes a framework that can be applied to evaluate, influence and maintain acceptable user-experience levels in organisations, such as Higher Education Institutions. The framework provides a mechanism for Higher Education Institutions to measure the experiences of end-users and to ensure that human factors are addressed when implementing information security in everyday end-user software applications. The contribution of this novel framework enables Higher Education Institutions to not only assess end-user security behaviour, but also to assist the organisation with the prevention of any security breaches. Ultimately, this research contributes to different domains – including user experience, information security and human-computer interaction. The framework presents a platform for Higher Education Institutions to strategically influence the end-user experiences, when ensuring a secure set-up to support academic activities.

However, there is evidence that the adoption of electronic medical records has been slow, and where adopted, often lacks meaningful use. Thus, there is a clear dichotomy between the ambitious use of EMR and the reality of EMR implementation. In South Africa, much work has been done to establish a baseline for standards – in order to ensure the interoperability and the data portability of healthcare applications and data. However, despite an increased focus on e-Health, South Africa remains excessively reliant on paper-based medical records. Where health-information technologies have been adopted, there is a lack of co-ordination between and within the provinces, leading to a multitude of systems and vendors. Thus, there is a lack of systematic adoption and the meaningful use of EMRs in South Africa. In this research, a localised approach is used to engender the meaningful use of electronic medical records in South Africa. The candidate has developed the constituents required to engender the meaningful use of electronic medical records for improving clinical care in South Africa. The study is highly relevant to the current South African health-policy environment, with particular reference to the e-Health strategy, the National Health Normative Standards Framework, and the impending National Health Insurance. The contribution of the work is unique; and it provides proposals to assist decision-makers to direct the use of electronic medical records within the context of the country’s legislative and policy imperatives.

Previous qualifications: 2010 NDip: IT (Software Development) (Cum Laude) Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University 2011 BTech: IT (Software Development) (Cum Laude) Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University 2012 MTech: IT (Cum Laude) Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Thesis: A MATURITY GRID-BASED METHOD FOR ASSESSING COMMUNICATION IN BUSINESS–IT ALIGNMENT This thesis has reported on research undertaken to develop, apply, and test a method whereby organisations could assess the quality of the human communication between their business and IT personnel, as part of the business–IT alignment endeavour. The aim of this method was to trigger reflection on communication by considering communication philosophy and practices in business–IT alignment. The method, termed the `Business-IT Communication Alignment Maturity Improvement (CAMI) method', was based on a maturity grid-based approach, which stemmed originally from process improvement in software development, quality management, and engineering design. The thesis was aligned with research performed by Maier et al. (2004, 2006), who successfully applied a maturity grid-based approach to investigate, audit and assess communication within the engineering-design process. The question addressed in this thesis was whether this approach could be successfully extrapolated to the business–IT alignment context, and whether it could yield similar benefits. Furthermore, the issue of whether it would offer a practical method for use in organisations, was also addressed. Having applied the developed CAMI method at a public sector organisation, this thesis proved that the maturity grid-based approach could indeed be extrapolated to the business–IT alignment context, consequently offering a viable, practical, and effective method for assessing business–IT related communication in organisations. In particular, the CAMI method allows organisations to capture both their current and their desired communication situations and to expose discrepancies between the perceptions held by their business and IT personnel. These results could form a basis for action planning, strategizing, and, ultimately, interventions for improvement.

Additionally, studies have shown that lack of trust is a critical barrier to the adoption of e-marketplaces. E-marketplaces expose consumers to the risk of non-delivery or misrepresentation of goods ordered, and the misuse of personal information by external parties. In addition, the time that investment is needed to make a shift to e-marketplaces and the opinions of important reference groups affects the user’s willingness to trust and depend on an e-marketplace. Voice-based information services attempt to address the challenges relating to the comparatively high cost of web-enabled devices, as well as the language and literacy barriers that characterise rural ICT implementations. This study was undertaken to assess the extent to which rural users with limited experience in the use of ICTs would trust and adopt a voice based e-marketplace, in order to support their agricultural trade. An Action-Research strategy was applied to design and deploy a voice-based e-marketplace, in order to support the trade of aloes in a rural community. The study found that usability, reliability, security and usefulness were critical determinants of the trustworthiness of a technology. Furthermore, an effective requirement-elicitation process was found to be central to achieving trust – when developing technologies for users with limited experience in ICTs.

The keynesian growth model suggests that public expenditure on the construction sector is anti-cyclical, thus serving as a stimulus in the economy. The aim of this study was to ascertain the determinants of private sector investment in the construction sector, given the macro-economic environment in South Africa. The research design adopted in this study was an “ex-post facto” type, known as a “causal-comparative design”. Using the auto-regressive distributed lags on a quarterly-data basis, the results show that there is a long-run causal relationship between the inflation rate, the interest rate, the real exchange rate, economic growth, GDP in the construction sector and private spending. Further analysis, using variance decomposition shows that the inflation rate explains most of the variations in private spending in the construction sector. Furthermore, there is a granger-causality between the inflation rate and private sector spending. This study makes a significant contribution to construction economics; since this is the first time that the determinants of private sector spending in the construction sector in South Africa have been scientifically analysed.

Despite there being prescriptive statutory requirements, continuing attempts to reduce the rate of loss appear to have been unsuccessful. A triangulated research methodology was utilised for the study, in order to develop recommendations for the

sector that are appropriate, achievable, and to engender an inclusive multi-stakeholder approach to health and

safety (H&S). An extensive international, African and South African literature review has contextualised

the South African paradigm and practices. The research considered the procurement processes that underpin a construction project, with elements relative

to the interface of H&S, design, the respective stages of work, and the current legislative framework. A

validated theoretical model, the ‘Deacon Procurement, Design and H&S Model’ emerged from the

literature, as well as the quantitative, and qualitative aspects of the research. The salient findings indicate a tendency in the industry to operate in silos, to adhere to minimum levels of compliance, and not to address those aspects that could possibly reduce project and financial risk. Clients do not identify risks during project-planning, resulting in the lack of adequate resources for projects, increasing the likelihood of fatalities, injuries, and disease. Furthermore, construction stakeholders need to collaborate across the stages of work. However, H&S knowledge is limited among clients and construction professionals involved across the project life cycle. Recommendations include, among others: the development of policy, guidelines and practice notes regarding

H&S; education and training; continual professional development (CPD); and ultimately, a paradigm shift in

thinking and practice on the part of all built environment stakeholders.

The research has made a significant contribution to the built environment professions in terms of a healthier, safer, construction industry, in particular, the development of a model to enable stakeholders to effectively integrate health and safety into project planning and execution, and to contribute to reducing project risk and the loss of life.

The study reveals that the NCDoH has not yet established collaborative critical success factors that integrate construction management and operation-management in the delivery of health-care facility projects. The research posits that a negative organisational climate and culture impact on stakeholder management during the development of the programme-management plan. The inability to identify the critical success factors leads to poor programme-management co-ordination; it creates internal competition and silo functions. In addressing the research problem, a programme-management framework that outlines the cross-functional processes was found to be necessary for smooth infrastructural construction and operations management, and the importance of a benefit-realisation plan to an organisation. The framework also includes stakeholder management, integrated management, senior-management commitment and an organisational culture, as being central critical success factors in ensuring the successful delivery of a health-care facility project. The study concluded that effective programme-management co-ordination and integrated management, together with a cross-functional approach, would facilitate the strategic transformation and the innovative-continuous improvement of an institution. The research acknowledges that the processes of operation-management in a project prepare the subsequent take-over by the relevant portfolios after completion and handover; while programme management aligns the programme strategy, legitimises the benefits, and outlines the stakeholder-management processes. Therefore, program management serves as a mechanism for benefit realization when infrastructural construction and operation management work together to attain the benefits of a corporate strategy.

However, as a result of low levels of awareness, the Nigerian construction industry pays little attention to the effects of generated material waste on cost overruns. Thus, this research aimed to investigate the relationship between material waste and cost overrun in the Nigerian construction industry. The study reveals a significant relationship between material waste and cost overrun at the pre-contract and at the post-contract stages of a project. The implication is that an increase in material wastage onsite leads to a corresponding increase in the amount of cost overrun. The average percentage contribution of material waste to project-cost overrun is four (4) per cent. Material-waste sources, the causes, and the control measures, thus, have significant effects on causation or minimisation of cost overrun at both the pre-contract and the post-contract stages of projects. The research has developed a conceptual model for the management of material waste and cost overrun in the construction industry, which is informed by the theoretical framework. The research has also developed a predictive-mathematical model for quantifying the amount of material waste to be generated by a project, as well as a mathematical equation for the effective management of construction material waste and cost overrun for projects. Based on the findings, the study recommends that the management of material waste and cost overrun should be included in the procurement process.
