YOU’RE no doubt still walking on air if your loved one has recently proposed – and quite rightly so! A whirlwind of congratulations cards, celebratory drinks, and gifts – being engaged is a happy and exciting time in anycouple’s life. And now you get to plan the wedding of your dreams! But where to start? One of the first things that most couples do is set a budget and decide what type of day they want. Whether it’s a traditional ceremony in a church or exchanging vows on a white sandy beach in Mexico, discussing this now will help give your plans focus and make any future decisions easier. With this decided, you can then begin your search for a venue. An important – and expensive - part of any wedding, the venue will have a big impact on your day and it’s therefore a decision

that deserves careful consideration. From how many guests you can invite, to the feel and atmosphere of the entire wedding, research the venues in your area and arrange appointments to visit and get a feel for them in person. After all the wedding co-ordinators at the venue will be responsible for helping to organise the biggest day of your life so it’s essential to make sure you’re happy! Once you’ve found the perfect place to say ‘I do’, it’s time to hit the shops in search of your dream wedding dress,as well as gowns for your bridesmaids and suits for the groom and his attendants. Plus there are a wealth of finer details to be organised. Be it invitations, cakes, wedding rings, transport, entertainment and photography or hairdressers, make-up artists, honeymoons and stag and hen dos, each one will help make

your day unique. For many modern weddings, venue decoration is also a big part of preparations. Would you like pedestals brimming with flowers in the church aisles? Will you need bouquets and button holes? What about table centre pieces, swagging, chairs and lighting? Even the plainest wedding venue can be transformed into the most magicalof settings with a few clever tricks ofthe trade. Make sure you visit your local wedding fayres too. Not only are they a great day out, but you’ll also find a wealth of inspiration and local experts offering exclusive deals that could save you a few pennies. Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll find everything you could need to plan the day of your dreams right on your doorstep.

GROOMS, you’ve probably heard your fiancée telling you that she’s been planning her wedding since she was a wee girl; that she already knows how she wants the flowers in the venue and the food at the reception and the music for your first dance; even the exact style of her dress. Come on now grooms, you’ve got to take the initiative and show your betrothed that you’ve been thinking long and hard about this wedding too, that you know exactly how you want to look, come the big day. Yeah, sure, you might not actually have a clue what to wear for the wedding, but there’s no need to tell her that. There’s still time to impress and build up those all important brownie points, so get looking now at different styles of jacket, colours of waistcoat, types of shirts and trousers. Are you going to rent or buy your outfit? What accoutrements will you need to set the ensemble off, just right? You’ll want a rather snazzy watch; some very smart shoes; gleaming cufflinks; an eye-grabbing tie or cool ruffle; maybe even a top hat, who knows?

Perhaps you’ve got your heart set on a kilt to showoff your Celtic heritage? Now is the time to start visiting local wedding stockists to get an idea of the choices you have available to you. Try as many different suits and stockists as you can and make a full and informed choice about your outfit. Bring someone with you to give you a second opinion too, and always consider whether you think your bride will like your choice. Make sure you place your suit order in plenty of time, especially if you and your best man are renting. That way you can be sure everything will be readyin time and you shouldn’t have a problem with your size or style selection being unavailable due tostock limitations. Follow this advice and you’ll not only be scoring maximum points from your bride, but you’ll be showing just how much thought and effort you’re putting into the wedding. Plus, you can be sure you’ll be looking fantastic on your big day.

WITH the benefit of elegant and mature gardens, the historic Durker Roods Hotel at Meltham offers the perfect setting for your big day. Whether you are looking for a receptionvenue following a church service, or want acivil ceremony at the hotel, Durker Roods is

DISCOVERING the perfect place to tie the knot can be quite a mission, butyou’re sure to make the right decisionwith so many venues to choose fromin the region. Will you be saying your vows and enjoying the wedding breakfast in the same venue, so all your guests stay under one roof, or will you have a ceremony in a church or register office and then take your celebrations to another venue? There are plenty of things to think about, so it’s worth making a list of all your favourite venues, and start by making appointments to visit your top choices. This will give you a better idea of what they offer and for what price. You’ll have a chance to speak with the wedding co-ordinator to find out if it’s the right venue for you and your groom. You need to check how many people can be seated in the rooms, whether you’ll have

the venue to yourself on the day, what time the celebrations have to finish, whether you need to have a minimum number of guests, plus doyou have to use their DJ and entertainment, and is there a cost ifyou find your own. There’s also the food to think about; will you be having a three course meal as well as an evening buffet? Find out what menu options they have, what style of food they offer and the costs per head of each, and this will help you make some choices. Once you’ve decided on a venue, you want to make sure it will look perfectly pretty! It’s time to pick out the decorations and colour scheme. There is a wide range of wedding themes you can choose between, and you can opt for an elaborate decor with ice sculptures or something simple with scattered delicate rose petals.

Why not choose candelabras adorned in flowers for the centrepiece of the table, or glass bowls filled with flowers or candles, martini-style glasses, decorative bird cages and balloons? Let your imagination run wild. In addition to table decorations, there’s also plenty of extras you can get, such as strips of fairy lights for the ceiling and walls, chair covers, shaped rose trees, floral arrangements on standsand organza bows and sashes. You’ll also need to decide if you’re having wedding favours, name cards for the table, a guest book and a seating plan on show - it’s all these little extras thatcan quickly add up. With so much to arrange, booking the perfect place can take a lot of the stress away while ensuring you enjoy your blessing with friends and family ina wonderful venue.

FROM the moment you get engaged, you’ve probably been counting down the days untilyou can book your first bridal boutique appointment. And quite rightly so! One of the most exciting parts of anywedding planning, there’s nothing like thefeeling of slipping on a wedding dress and sipping a glass of Champagne. Start your search by flicking through bridal magazines or visiting bridal fayres for inspiration and then, when you’re ready, assemble a small number of your most trusted family members and bridesmaids to accompany you on appointments to your local bridal shops. An emotional time, it’s not every day amother gets to see her little girl try on wedding gowns, so be warned, you’ll probably need a pack of tissues! It’s good to have a rough idea of the types of styles and designs you like before your visit – thousands of sparkling crystals versus plain and simple, for example – but it’s essential to keep an open mind too. You might not thinkthat taffeta gown looks great on the hanger, but there’s a good chance it could be yourdream dress! From fairytale ballgowns and figure-hugging fishtails to lace long-sleeved A-lines, you’ll discover a gorgeous selection of breathtaking gowns and there’s something to make every bride look her most beautiful. When choosing your dress, think about whether the location or season of yourwedding will have any impact too. A beautiful tulle gown with layers of petticoats might be perfect for a church ceremony in our chilly autumn, but not so suitable for a beachfront wedding in Mexico. The last thing you want is to be uncomfortable on your big day. The right accessories are key to completing your outfit as well. If, for instance, you’ve opted for a 1950s-style dress, a birdcage veil or embellished headband could be the perfect finishing touch. If you’re unsure, ask the staff at your bridal store for their professional advice, or post requests on wedding forums online to see if any brides with the same dress can give you some inspiration. From crystal-encrusted tiara, vintage slides and cathedral length veils to A-line hoops, there’s the

ideal match for every gown. As for shoes, there are a fantastic variety ofheel heights, styles and colours to choose between. Perhaps you’ve got your heart set on a pair ofoh-so-strokeable designer heels? Or maybe you want to walk down the aisle in a pair of glittery, ruby red shoes? Just remember to balance style with practicality, as you’ll be wearing them for well over 10 hours! Of course, you’ll also want your leading ladies to look their best, and most bridal boutiques stock a stunning selection of bridesmaid dresses. For 2013, key trends includefloor-length gowns, ruffles, chiffon and a palette of vibrant colours including reds, blues, pinks and purples. If you can’t get your bridesmaids to agree on one style, why not opt for different designs in the same shade? A great option for bridesmaids who are different heights, sizes and body shapes. Again, ask your bridal boutique if they canrecommend any particular dresses to complement your own gown. They’ll have years of experience when it comes to matching outfits, and can offer invaluable advice. So what are you waiting for? It’s time to start the search to find your dream dress.

SO where to start? In plenty of time, you should plan at least six months in advance especially if you are having a fruit cake, to ensure it has adequate time to mature. And when it comes to inspiration for your cake, bear in mind the overall style of the wedding. You should think about whether or not your wedding has a specific theme, or if you have an interesting feature on the dress that you might want to incorporate, or

specific colours. There are also a number of magazines on the market including specific ones on cake designs, and the internet is also a very useful tool. Make sure you have a consultation with your potential cake-maker to build up a rapport and so you can sample some of their wares. The best recommendation is word of mouth so ask around and see if you know anyone who can make a personal recommendation.

If you keep a file of ideas such as colour swatches, magazine cut-outs, etc, this is useful for the cake-maker to be able to build up a picture of the overall look of the wedding. Anything goes when it comes to the style of cake you choose and the possibilities are endless. From a traditional three-tier white iced, fruit cake to individual chocolate cupcakes and just about everything in between - the only limit is your own imagination!

As mother of the bride, make sure you stand out from the crowd for all the right reasons.

ALL eyes may be on the bride but, as the mother of the bride you also want to turn heads, but in a good way. There is a fine line between wanting to make your own fashion statement and completely upstaging the bride, so make sure you get it right on the big day so that mother and daughter can both enjoy the memory of theoccasion forever. No matter what your taste, style or budget, there is something for everyone so shop around and take your time getting your outfit just right. Don’t be tempted to go with anything too fashionable. You are best opting for a classic look that will stand the test of time - those wedding pictures are going to be around for a long time remember! And take into account comfort as well - it is a long day and you want to be at your best to give your daughter your complete and undivided attention, so make sure you aren’t worrying about

how uncomfortable your shoes are! Bear in mind the time of year aswell. You might be buying your outfiton a glorious sunny day, but if thewedding is in the depths of winter you will need to make sure you are warm. And likewise, if it is a summerwedding, you should plan youroutfit accordingly. A flattering, flowery dress is a great look for a summer wedding and should strike the right tone to get you through the day in style and comfort. Keep your accessories simple so you don’t look too over the top though. For an autumn or winter wedding,a smart suit is a better option and again, if you go for a classic and flattering style, your look will definitely stand the test of time. Feel free to go the whole hog with accessories to really glam it up and remember that a gorgeous hat will add that all-important finishing touch to your look.

Mum’sthe wordAdding the finishing touches to your outfit can make all the difference between simply looking okay and looking completely radiant on the big day, so make sure you get it right.

Duty CallsAS well as walking down the aisle looking absolutely fabulous, bridesmaids have a very important role to play in the wedding. In early Roman times, they were recruited as a shield of infantry to protect the bride from wayward thugs aiming to steal her dowry and vengeful suitors and in some cultures they are responsible for warding off evil spirits! These days, however, they are called on to provide moral support for the bride and act as her special assistant and confidante, helping her to find her dream dress, advising on colour schemes and providing a listening ear for when she wants to sound off about a pushy mother-in-law to be! The chief bridesmaid or maid of honour (usually someone a little older who is already married) will be in charge of organising the all-important hen night. She may also help out with the wedding plans from making favours to sending out invitations. On the actual day, she will help the bride get ready, fluffing out her veil, zipping her into her dress and helping to calm her nerves - as well as looking after younger bridesmaids and page boys. Traditionally, she will arrive at the wedding venue with the bride’s mother, and will then walk down the aisle, behind the bride, lifting

the veil so she doesn’t trip up and holdingthe bouquet during the ceremony. Shemay then witness the signing of the register and usually leaves the church with thebest man. As a member of the receiving line, a bridesmaid will welcome guests, friends and relatives, moving them along smoothly and making sure that everyone has a chance to speak briefly with the bride and groom. Later, at the reception, she will act as a hostess, greeting guests and introducing people. The bridesmaid and best man will usually join the newlyweds halfway through their first dance then encourage others to get up onto the dance floor. During the day, the bridesmaid will be on call to make sure the bride is looking her beautiful best at all times - stocking an emergency supply of lip gloss, spare tights and tissues! She may even be required to help the bride get changed and prepared to leave for her honeymoon and will take care of the wedding dress and make sure it is kept safely and that nothing is left behind. After all her hard work, hopefully, the bridesmaid will be rewarded with a small thank-you from the bride and groom as a token of their appreciation!

If you prefer to stay a little closer to home with yourcuisine, take some great British favourites and serve themstraight up with a chic twist. Fish and chips wrapped in newspaper have been popular recently, you could also offer bangers and mash or a traditional hog roast.

Mini meals - or scaled down portions of traditional dishes - are one of the hottest trends in hors d’oeuvres. Think miniature hamburgers with teardrop tomato slices, tiny Chinese to-go boxes stuffed with lobster, shrimp, and Chow Fun noodles and serve French onion soup in a shot glass.

Global cuisine is very in vogueso why not take your guests on a culinary voyage overseas? You could have Italian pasta or Chinese wok stations or even a build-your-own taco bar. Why not choose the cuisine from your honeymoon destination or take your guests on a world tour, and serve a little bit of everything?!

Instead of segregating your guests off onto separate tables where they may have to sit with strangers, arrange to have two or three long tables alongside each other and enjoy a Medieval style banquet.

Fonduesand fountainsChocolate fountainshave been around fora while now but are still a real favourite with guests who can enjoy decadently dipping fresh strawberries and marshmallows into the cascading melted chocolate. Or for something a little different - why not have a fondue fountain of melted Swiss cheese or even a fruit coulis?

Set up self-service cocktail bars with shorts, juices and mixers and let your guests create their own drinks - they could even name them and you could maybe offer a prize for the most inventive! It might be worth hiring a professional cocktail waiter to assist your guests and offer them some tips. They are usually more than happy to show off their skills adding a great spectacle toyour reception.

Avoid any last minute make-up disasters with our essential guide to bridal beauty.

It’s the morning of my wedding and I’ve woken up with a huge spot on my chin. Help! What should I do?First of all, don’t panic! There are so many amazing products on the market now that you’ll still be able to have flawless skin for your big day. First of all, use a cover-up stick that matches

your skin tone to take the redness out of the spot. Then, a long lasting foundation should help to create another layer over the spot. Makesure you rub it in well so it blends in with the rest of your skin. Keep your cover-up stick handy to touch up throughout the day and then forget about it and get on with enjoyingyour day.

I’ve had a fake-tan disaster and my skin has gonebright orange in patches.I get married in two days- what can I do?

Well, if you have patches it is easier. All you need to do here is get some more fake tan and work into those patches; try to use the same amount as on the surrounding areas and don’t rub it in too hard - or you will make things worse and get spots of darker tan and lighter tan. If you need to remove fake tan as it has gone too orange, then try the following but be warned - it should only be used as an emergency and don’t use on your face. Mix together some lemon juice and some sugar, and then place on the fake tan. Leave for about 10 minutes. Then scrub hard and hopefully it should start to take off the tan, the acid helping to cut through it and remove it.

You don’t want to be running to the bathroom all the time to touch up your make-up so invest in some long lasting make-up that is guaranteed to see you through your big day. From all-day foundation and creaseproof eye shadow to waterproof mascara (a must for any bride!) and long-lasting lipstick, there are loads of products out there specifically designed to last all day. Make sure you do a trial run first so you know what suits you and then you can pucker up and concentrate on looking radiant all day long!

Wedding Services

LUCKY couples tying the knot in 2013 will discover an array of inspirational trends to make their wedding even more unforgettable! From beautiful bridal gowns and bouquets to venue decoration, wedding trends change with each season. So what’s tipped to be in the centre of our reception tables and waltzing its way down the aisle this year? One of the biggest crazes is the glitz and glamour of the roaring 1920s. Taking inspiration from Baz Luhrmann’s production of The Great Gatsby - predicted to be this year’s biggest movie release - think opulent chandeliers dripping with strings of pearls; vintage photo frames and drop- waisted

wedding dresses, as well as bejewelled headbands and Art Deco jewellery. Its muted colour palette of pale greens, ivories, creams, peaches, dusky pinks and golds is also a surefire way to create an elegant and high-end reception. Love birds are another popular trend flying their way into couple’s hearts. Cute, quirky and sweet, our feathered friends are perfect for most themes, be it rustic, retro or glam. Incorporate them into your big day with invitations, favours and centre pieces. The passion for DIY decorations is also gathering pace. A trend that started with brides aiming to save themselves a few

pennies, today it’s more about creating a unique day. In general, the wedding industry has seen a departure from the everything- must-be-colour-co-ordinated-and-perfect look, and is instead putting the emphasis on mis-matched and shabby chic items, together with recycled woods and fabrics. As for picking flowers, the soft and romantic nature of peonies makes them a strong contender for flower of the year, plus the English garden look is still going strong. In terms of wedding gowns, bold and bright shades are making an impression on the catwalk, as well as feminine pastels like

candy floss pink. Lace, sheer fabrics, portrait backs (cut outs), soft peplums and uber-short hemlines are also en vogue, and ensure every bride will look breathtaking. Mint green is another key colour predicted to be popular with blushing brides. Timeless, classy and incredibly flattering, expect to see this versatile hue in bouquets, bridesmaid dresses, decorations and cakes. Pretty much everywhere! With so many gorgeous trends there’s something to suit every taste. Today’s weddings are individual occasions unique to each couple, so follow your heart and plan the day of your dreams!
