Description

It is quite different than a wood stain. It is not something you “paint” on the concrete to add layer of color. It enhances the natural look of any concrete substrate as well as providing the long-lasting protection and beauty to both new or old masonry and concrete depending the type and system of stain being used.

Page 3: CONCRETE STAIN (version2)

Uses:• Horizontal surfaces: - masonry and concrete floors - pool decks, porches and patios - basement and garage floors - asphalt - entrances, sidewalks/walkways and drive-

ways - landscape pavers

Page 4: CONCRETE STAIN (version2)

• Vertical surfaces: - concrete blocks - stucco walls - precast, poured-in place and tilt-up concrete

- and retaining walls

Types of Concrete Stain:• Acid Stain – a transparent penetrating

concrete stain which contains a mild acid mixed with mineral salts

• Water-based Concrete Stain – an excellent alternative for concrete not suitable for acid stain

Page 6: CONCRETE STAIN (version2)

Types of Water based Stains: • Concrete Acrylic Stain – are ideal for coloring just

about any concrete surfaces. • Copolymer dispersion system - Two packed systems • Silicone/silane modified Acrylic stain -This special

resin is combined w/ a water repellant silane and inorganic pigments to ensure long-lasting performance

• Solid Color Stain - a non-reactive, non-acrylic based modified polymer, forms an opaque (solid) breathable finish that requires no sealer.

• Silicate base- can be low-pigmented or opaque, it consolidates the substrate through silicate silicification, produces a mineral matt-finish, like concrete

Page 7: CONCRETE STAIN (version2)

New Technology:• Infrared Heat reflective Concrete stain – come in a

unique 3- part kit. It is modified polymer, water based color stain which uses specialty infrared reflective pigments.

• Lithium bases Stain – an extremely durable stain based on aqueous dispersion of lithium silicates for concrete and masonry surfaces, it has the ability to penetrate and bond to more dense materials

• Blend of water dispersed polyester polymer and waterborne polyurethane – (new technology by Envirosafe) w/specially formulated ground pigments when dry forms a monolithic barrier that fills the pores and color the concrete at the same time, it seals, and protects

Page 8: CONCRETE STAIN (version2)

Disadvantages of Acid Stains– colors usually limited to earth tones– contains toxic chemicals– not applicable to any surface that already has a

concrete sealer or curing agents or older concrete surfaces where free lime already leached out

– Surface preparations, application methods and the conditions of the concrete itself will determine the outcome.

– Will highlight inconsistencies like patchwork or filled cracks

Page 9: CONCRETE STAIN (version2)

Advantages of Acid stains:– Outstanding durability – it surpasses all

other concrete coatings in terms of resistance and long lasting durability. They will not chip, fade, or peel off the surface to which they are applied. Their longevity is even furthered when floors are sealed and/or waxed.

– Creates a variegated or mottled look like marble or any decorative color schemes and patterns

Page 10: CONCRETE STAIN (version2)

Advantages of WaterBased Concrete Stains:

• since the concrete floors are very porous, the water-based concrete stain are absorbed into the floor, with no need for toxic chemicals.

• Water based stains also create an opaque appearance, thus more forgiving of blemishes

• comes in a wide selection of vibrant colors, more than to of acid stains

• safer alternative of acid stains

Page 11: CONCRETE STAIN (version2)

Disadvantages of WaterBased Concrete Stains

• Unlike when using an acid based stain, it is necessary to neutralize the surface, because there is no chemical reaction taking place.

• Sealer is recommended which is designed to go with the type of stain

• If staining a smooth surface, acid etching of the surface is necessary to open the pores in the surface of the concrete and reduce alkalinity.

• moisture present in the surface

SUMMARY• There are several types of concrete stains available to choose based on the desired

look, the use and the condition of the concrete surface. Most commons are Acid Stains and Acrylic Stains. Acid stains create natural, variegated or mottled look. They are ideal for newer concrete without a lot of cosmetics defects and discoloration. Acid stains will actually highlight existing defects. Acrylic stains create a more consistent appearance and will help hide blemishes and discoloration. They are better for older and more porous concrete. They are also much more user friendly and less toxic because they are water based or water extended. There are also several different types of concrete stains which vary according to their binder type. Other concrete stains also act as sealer, so, no need to put extra coat of a clear sealer. If you want your concrete to look like a painted surface or there are imperfections that can’t be hidden by regular acrylic stain, then a polymer stain (solid color) maybe the best choice. A few coats of polymer stains will make a slab completely uniform in color .

• There are several different concrete stain application technique/methods for enhancing the concrete surfaces. These depend on the desired aesthetic look and type of concrete stain being used. Most Concrete stains are applied to a continuous wet edge since they are fast drying. Excessive or multiple applications may develop sufficient film formation/accumulation to restrict the rate of moisture vapor transmission, resulting in possible failure.

• Surface preparation is very important before applying concrete stains. It must be done thoroughly for successful result. Curing time of concrete plays a vital role too.

Page 18: CONCRETE STAIN (version2)

While giving similar protection as the standard paint to concrete. Concrete stains have other benefits (as claimed by the manufacturers):

1. Penetrate deep and chemically bond with concrete.

2. Will not fade, chalk or peel.3. Protects concrete from stain discoloration

resulting from food spillage, automotive oil and grease drippings.

4. Does not significantly alter concrete moisture vapor transmission rate

5. Can be cost-effective6. Fast drying- minimizes time spent waiting

between coats
