NOTESTheGoodShepherd–Composer’sNotesTuckedawayontheforestedoutskirtsofCincinnati,OhioisabeautifuloldGermanchurch,St.ThomasEpiscopalChurch.Ithasbeenmypleasuretoservetherethesepastfiveyearsascomposer-in-residence.Eachmonth,theBachEnsembleatSt.Thomas--anensembleofBachlovingmusiciansfromtheCincinnatiSymphonyandotherlocalprofessionals--presentsoneofBach's200existingchurchcantatasinitsnaturalhabitat;nottheconcerthall,butinaworshipservice.IbeganwritingacantataofmyowneachyeartostandalongsideortaketheplaceoftheBachcantataofthemonth.PhyllisWocher(LDSpoetandauthor)andIcompilethetextsforthesecantatasfromtheBibleandLDSscripture,togetherwithnewpoemsandhymntextsofourowndesign.TheGoodShepherdisthe4thinthisseriesandwasjointlycommissionedbySt.ThomasEpiscopalChurch,FairfaxUnitedMethodistChurchinVirginia,andBYU-Idaho.TheGoodShepherdisthestoryofthelostsheepinallofuswhosometimesstraysfromthefoldandendsuptrappedonasteepandslipperyslope.Findinghimselfindirestraits,herememberstheShepherdandcriesforhelp.Hopinghisfeeblebleatingwillbeheardandthesearchpartywillfindhim,hecomestohimselfandrealizesthatitwashisownneglectoftheShepherd'svoicethatbroughthimto“thevalleyoftheshadowofdeath."WhentheShepherdcomesatlasttotherescue,Helovinglybindsthesheep'swoundsandcarrieshimonhisshouldersbacktothefold.Thesheep'seyesareopenedandhelearnsaprofoundtruth.TheShepherdbecamewhoHeisbygivingHislifeforthesheep.Onlybytakinguphisowncrossandbecominganunder-shepherdcanthesheeptrulydwellinthehouseoftheLordandfindeternalpasture.AboutTheBYU-IdahoSacredMusicSeriesIn1993,theUniversitybeganaprogramofbiennialcommissionstoLDScomposerstocreatenewreligiousoratorioswithtextsdrawnfromscripture.ThesenewSacredMusicSeriesworkshavebeenperformedinseveralmajornationalvenues.TheGoodShepherd,byDouglasPew,isthefirstintheseriestobecommissionedbyaconsortiumofchoirs;itisalsothefirstinaseriesofshorter,cantata-lengthworkstobecommissionedundertheauspicesoftheSacredMusicSeries.Theworksintheseriescanbeviewedathttp://www.byui.edu/music/events/sacred-musicandarealsoavailableforpurchaseonCDandDVDthroughtheDepartmentofMusic.Thenextcommissionedwork,byDavidSargent,willpremiereinMarch2018.

NOTESTheGoodShepherd–Composer’sNotesTuckedawayontheforestedoutskirtsofCincinnati,OhioisabeautifuloldGermanchurch,St.ThomasEpiscopalChurch.Ithasbeenmypleasuretoservetherethesepastfiveyearsascomposer-in-residence.Eachmonth,theBachEnsembleatSt.Thomas--anensembleofBachlovingmusiciansfromtheCincinnatiSymphonyandotherlocalprofessionals--presentsoneofBach's200existingchurchcantatasinitsnaturalhabitat;nottheconcerthall,butinaworshipservice.IbeganwritingacantataofmyowneachyeartostandalongsideortaketheplaceoftheBachcantataofthemonth.PhyllisWocher(LDSpoetandauthor)andIcompilethetextsforthesecantatasfromtheBibleandLDSscripture,togetherwithnewpoemsandhymntextsofourowndesign.TheGoodShepherdisthe4thinthisseriesandwasjointlycommissionedbySt.ThomasEpiscopalChurch,FairfaxUnitedMethodistChurchinVirginia,andBYU-Idaho.TheGoodShepherdisthestoryofthelostsheepinallofuswhosometimesstraysfromthefoldandendsuptrappedonasteepandslipperyslope.Findinghimselfindirestraits,herememberstheShepherdandcriesforhelp.Hopinghisfeeblebleatingwillbeheardandthesearchpartywillfindhim,hecomestohimselfandrealizesthatitwashisownneglectoftheShepherd'svoicethatbroughthimto“thevalleyoftheshadowofdeath."WhentheShepherdcomesatlasttotherescue,Helovinglybindsthesheep'swoundsandcarrieshimonhisshouldersbacktothefold.Thesheep'seyesareopenedandhelearnsaprofoundtruth.TheShepherdbecamewhoHeisbygivingHislifeforthesheep.Onlybytakinguphisowncrossandbecominganunder-shepherdcanthesheeptrulydwellinthehouseoftheLordandfindeternalpasture.AboutTheBYU-IdahoSacredMusicSeriesIn1993,theUniversitybeganaprogramofbiennialcommissionstoLDScomposerstocreatenewreligiousoratorioswithtextsdrawnfromscripture.ThesenewSacredMusicSeriesworkshavebeenperformedinseveralmajornationalvenues.TheGoodShepherd,byDouglasPew,isthefirstintheseriestobecommissionedbyaconsortiumofchoirs;itisalsothefirstinaseriesofshorter,cantata-lengthworkstobecommissionedundertheauspicesoftheSacredMusicSeries.Theworksintheseriescanbeviewedathttp://www.byui.edu/music/events/sacred-musicandarealsoavailableforpurchaseonCDandDVDthroughtheDepartmentofMusic.Thenextcommissionedwork,byDavidSargent,willpremiereinMarch2018.
