ELECTRIC PROPULSION SYSTEM
CONTEXT:
ISRO is working on Electric Propulsion System (EPS) which can reduce the dependence on chemical
propellant.
ELECTRIC PROPULSION SYSTEM:
Electric Propulsion (EP) is a class of space propulsion which makes use of electrical power to
accelerate a propellant by different possible electrical and/or magnetic means.
The use of electrical power enhances the propulsive performances of the EP thrusters
compared with conventional chemical thrusters.
Unlike chemical systems, electric propulsion requires very little mass to accelerate a
spacecraft.
The propellant is ejected up to twenty times faster than from a classical chemical thruster
and therefore the overall system is many times more mass efficient.
ISRO has been working since long to develop the Electric Propulsion System.
This system was first used by ISRO in 2017 as a technology demonstrator in GSAT- 9 or the
South Asian Satellite.
This system converts solar energy available in space into electrical energy, which is then
used to change the velocity of a satellite in space.
GREEN PROPELLANTS
CONTEXT:
ISRO is developing green propellants for use in future rocket & satellite propulsion systems.
GREEN PROPELLANTS:
All space faring nations have been investigating green propulsion systems to minimize
environmental impact while improving overall efficiency and economy.
ISRO has made a beginning by developing an eco-friendly solid propellant based on Glycidyl
Azide Polymer (GAP) as fuel and Ammonium Di-Nitramide (ADN) as oxidizer at the
laboratory level, which will eliminate the emission of chlorinated exhaust products from
rocket motors.
