Definitions

• Comparison-describes systems that distinguish the degree to which the modifier modifies its complement.

• Modifiers- an adjective,

adverb, phrase, or clause that emphasizes the meaning of a noun.

Importance to the English Language

• The importance of comparisons and modifiers to the English language is to compare and contrast two different subjects and to emphasize the meaning of a noun.

Comparison Rules

1. If the adjective is one syllable, you can add –er.

Example • It is much colder today than it was

yesterday.

2. When you want to say one thing is less than another, you can either use ‘less than’ or ‘not as’.

Example • The money I made was less than

what I had expected.

3. When you compare two things, use ‘than’.

Example• I’m smarter than you.

• It is much colder today than it was yesterday.

• Mathew is the more talkative of the two brothers.

• That is the least expensive iPod in the store.
