Hello

Hi! I am Mario. This is my fifth assignment for “Introduction and Music Production” at Coursera.org

I will be teaching about “Compare and contrast an algorithmic and convolution reverb. Demonstrate the difference and the important features in both types of reverb.”

Reverberation, what is it?

Reverberation, what is it?

Reverberation is the persistence of sound in a particular space after the original sound is produced.

Reverberation, what is it?

Reverberation is the persistence of sound in a particular space after the original sound is produced.

A reverberation is created when a sound is produced in an enclosed space causing a large number of echoes to build up and then slowly decay as the sound is absorbed by the walls and air.

Why do we need it?

Why do we need it?

Reverb is an important effect because it brings a space-feeling to our mix.

Why do we need it?

Reverb is an important effect because it brings a space-feeling to our mix.

Depending on the kind of feeling/impression we’re looking, we’ll choose a specific type of reverb.

Types of reverb

Types of reverb

If you don’t want to record your song in a natural reverberated place, you will need to choose in your DAW what kind of reverb is better for your work

Types of reverb

If you don’t want to record your song in a natural reverberated place, you will need to choose in your DAW what kind of reverb is better for your work

You will have the choice between two main types : algorithmic and convolution reverb.

Algorithmic vs Convolution reverb

Algorithmic vs Convolution reverb

Algorithmic vs Convolution reverb

They are both created through mathematical calculations

Algorithmic vs Convolution reverb

Algorithmic vs Convolution reverb

There is one mathematical algorithm for each reverb: room, hall, etc…

Algorithmic vs Convolution reverb

There is one mathematical algorithm for each reverb: room, hall, etc…

This reverb is recreating a reverb effect of a non-existent place

Algorithmic vs Convolution reverb

There is one mathematical algorithm for each reverb: room, hall, etc…

This reverb is recreating a reverb effect of a non-existent place

Convolution reverb is going to recreate the reverb of a real existing place, for example, Royal Albert Hall in London

Algorithmic vs Convolution reverb

There is one mathematical algorithm for each reverb: room, hall, etc…

This reverb is recreating a reverb effect of a non-existent place

To create this mathematical calculation, first of all, sound engineers have to study the reverb behavior of the place

Algorithmic vs Convolution reverb

There is one mathematical algorithm for each reverb: room, hall, etc…

This reverb is recreating a reverb effect of a non-existent place

Convolution reverbs use real sound samples, recorded from real rooms (or modified but based on real recordings in some cases) known as “Impulse Responses”

How to choose?

How to choose?

Algorithmic: Convolution reverb:

How to choose?

Algorithmic: You adjust a lot of

parameters

parameters Needs much less

CPU power

the result will be disappointing

Convolution reverb: Recreates the

reverb of a real place

Sounds more natural

But needs a lot of CPU power & you onli can choose from a limited number of pre-studied places
