150 years of history
Established in 1861 to meet the needs of the shipping world.
One of the oldest class societies.
1950 - 1967 participation in international bodies: International Institute of Welding (IIW),
International Standardization Organization (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) and International Ship Structures Congress (ISSC).
1968 foundation of IACS: founder member along with six other Registers of the International
Association of Classification Societies (IACS).
1970 diversification of activities: creation of a specific group for the acquisition and provision of
industrial services.
1999 transfer from Registro Italiano Navale to RINA S.p.A.: establishment of RINA S.p.A. a
joint stock company set up in Genova by Registro Italiano Navale which is the reference
shareholder.
2011 figures 1600 resources of 46 different nationalities, an average age of 40; 55 companies,
120 offices in 42 countries.
1861 – 1871 initial developments: from 13 agencies and 340 ships classed to 49 agencies and
1500 ships classed.
1885 creation of an international network: opening of an agency in Shanghai.
1910 merger with “Registro Nazionale” and change of name to “Registro Nazionale Italiano”:
Chairmanship of the Register is assigned in turn to representatives from the Chamber of
Commerce of Genova and to the President of the Upper Council of the Merchant Marine.
1919 first international agreements: agreements with the British Corporation Register, the
American Bureau of Shipping and the Teikoku Kaiji Kyokai, for mutual representation in their
respective countries and harmonisation of rules.
1921 establishment of Registro Italiano: merger with “Veritas Adriatico” and registered office in
Roma and administrative offices in Genova.
