About Proton Ventures

Proton Ventures B.V. originally started in 2001 in Brielle, the Netherlands. In 2011 we moved to our office in Schiedam within close proximity to the industries in the Port of Rotterdam.

We are a team of 20 enthusiastic professionals who can develop, design and implement customized solutions for our customers.

We design and implement projects or participate in projects by offering engineering, procurement and construction services.

We provide operation & maintenance services.

We provide turn-key solutions for our customers.

Our mission

EMPOWERING STORAGE SOLUTIONS.Chemicals, green energy and beyond.

We want to be leading partner for decentralized ammonia and/or NFUEL production units in the world. Our goal is to be an innovative partner for storage of liquefied gasses and other chemicals in a safe, reliable, efficient and environmentally accepted way.

About Ammonia

Ammonia (NH3) is a compound composed of a single nitrogen (N) and three hydrogen (H) atoms with a boiling point of -34° C.

Ammonia is one of the most commonlyproduced industrial chemicals and is used in a wide range of industrial sectors. About 80% of the global ammonia production is consumed by the fertilizer industry.

Other common uses of ammonia are as intermediate for fibers & plastics, pharma-ceuticals, pulp & paper, refrigeration and cleaning.

Ammonia also has a high potential as energy carrier (power-to-ammonia).

Our vision

Our vision is to develop and implement sustainable, decentralized and small-scale ammonia / nitric acid plants.Proton Ventures has a long experience of working with ammonia, with expertise inammonia production, storage and handling.

Proton’s History

Company Portfolio

AS BCT is a state-of-the-art terminal concept at the Estonian port of Sillamäe that stores and transships ammonia and liquid mineral fertilizers.

Proton Ventures has realized two ammonia tanks of 30.000 tons capacity each and four UAN tanks of 20.000 tons capacity each. The liquid ammonia can be delivered from Novgorod district by rail and forwarded to customers by sea-going vessels. The system provided includes specialized containers for UAN transshipment.

Kemira is a global chemicals company serving customers in water-intensive industries.

In 2011 Proton Power Cooling, part of Proton Ventures, installed two cooling towers on the Kemira site which provide Kemira with over 1500 m3/hr cooling water with a water temperature of 22°C.

This is an open project as productivity and quality of our cooling water system and, thus, the end-users process is continuously being improved.

Huntsman Polyurethanes is a global leader in MDI based polyurethanes, serving 3,000 customers in more than 90 countries. For their facilities in the Botlek (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) Proton Ventures designedand built a skid mounted HCl absorber unit to convert hydrogen chloride gas into ahydrochloric acid solution with a production capacity of 25 ton/h.

Proton Ventures also designed and built two adjacent HCl storage tanks of 2,000 ton with truck loading system.

(Waste) gas-to-Ammonia

The general worldwide production of ammonia is based on natural gas as a feedstock. These production facilities have high capacities and are spread over various locations where natural gas is available.

Proton Ventures offers modern technical solutions which make it possible to move away from large-scale plants towards small-scale ammonia production units (NFUEL®).With this approach and technology Proton Ventures can provide customers with small-scale ammonia plants, ensuring customer’s independence of transport costs and ammonia price fluctuations. Natural gas or biogas can be used as feedstock. As a result, NFUEL® makes it possible to produce ammonia from a waste product.

Company Portfolio

Proton Ventures has the knowledge and experience to design small-scale ammo-nia plants. Electric power produced from renewable resources (wind, solar & tidal energy) can be used as energy source for these units. This new concept makes it possible to produce green decentralized ammonia which can be further used as:

• Nitrogen carrier (fertilizer)

• Hydrogen carrier

• Energy storage

• Fuel

• DeNOx

Power-to-AmmoniaSmall-scale ammonia production

Proton Ventures offers three different capacities (see table). The NFUEL® units allow compensation for variation in the supply and demand of the energy market byemploying ammonia as energy carrier.

Proton Ventures news

ISO 9001:2015 certification for Proton Ventures Quality and safety are our top priorities. As of October 2017 we are ISO 9001:2015 certified and we can also prove that Quality and Safety are very important to us.

European Power to Ammonia® ConferenceProton Ventures is initiator of the first and second European Power to Ammonia® Conference. With more than 135 partici-pants the first edition of this event was a big success. In 2018 this event will take place May 17 & 18 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Strategic collaboration Proton Ventures and Vicoma Proton Ventures and Vicoma Engineering have a strategic collaboration. Bothcompanies will work together for worldwide acquisition and realization of small-scale ammonia plants and ammonia & UAN storage projects.

Presentation International Fertiliser SocietyHans Vrijenhoef, our director, presented the paper ‘Opportunities for small scale ammonia production’ at the International Fertiliser Society Conference in London, United Kingdom. The paper reviews the technical and economical parameters for which mini-ammonia production will become feasible.

Report from the European Conference: Renewable Ammonia cost-competitive with Natural Gas Ammonia International Energy Agency (IEA) at the European Conference on Ammonia: costs have already come down so far, renewable ammonia is cost-competitive in certain regions today.

Ammonia mentioned in Dutch govern-mental agreementsIn the Netherlands, a new government came into office in October 2017.‘Ammonia energy’ is referred as a potential solution for storing sustainable energy in the Dutch governmental agreements.
