WHAT IS COMMUNITY INTERNSHIP

It will be possibly the best experience you have at University. It will be the most rewarding thing you have done. It will be something of which you are extremely proud. It will challenge you to grow your professional and personal skills.

It is not just work experience. It is not just volunteering.

Not regular classroom. Not regular assessment.

EMPLOYERS VALUE VOLUNTEERING

Research shows that employers value volunteer experience highly and are more likely to select candidates who have volunteered over those who do not have this experience. (University of Western Australia)

Page 20: Community Internship 3002GIH

EMPLOYERS VALUE VOLUNTEERING

The following skills were both highly valued by employers and well developed in volunteers:interpersonal, communication and teamwork skillscross-cultural communication skillsorganisational and management skillsinitiative, resourcefulness and adaptabilityproblem-solving skills.

As one human resource manager insisted, these are ‘tough skills, not soft skills’, which are hard to develop and highly sought after in the Australian workforce. Due to the changes caused by globalisation and the emergence of a knowledge-based economy, employers value them even more highly than job-specific technical skills. (Monash University)

PERSONAL BENEFITS OF VOLUNTEERING

“Among other things, the study found that service participation positively affects students’ commitment to their communities, to helping others in difficulty, to promoting racial understanding, and to influencing social values. In addition, service participation directly influences the development of important life skills, such as leadership ability, social self-confidence, critical thinking skills, and conflict resolution skills. Service participation also has unique positive effects on academic development, including knowledge gained, grades earned, degrees sought after, and time devoted to academic endeavours. “

(Astin, A W, Sax, L J and Avalos, J. (2003). Long-Term Effects of Volunteerism during the Undergraduate Years in Campus Compact)

PERSONAL BENEFITS OF VOLUNTEERING

“In total, the research on the benefits of giving (volunteering)is extremely powerful, to the point that suggests healthcare professionals should consider recommending such activities to patients.”.

“In addition, the survey results indicated that volunteers have less trouble sleeping, less anxiety, and better friendships and social networks.

“If you could create a pill with the same results as indicated by the survey of American volunteers, it would be a best seller overnight.”

Dr Stephen Poster, Professor of Preventive Medicine. Quoted on www.probonoaustralia.com.au/news/2012/10/confirmed-volunteering-good-you
