Figure 9b continued: Texas Demographics

Projections of High School Graduates in the South by Race/Ethnicity, 1992 to 2022 (Public and Nonpublic HS Graduates)This figure exhibits (in actual numbers) the actual and projected number of HS graduates by race/ethnicity for the SouthData source: Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE)Knocking at the College Door: Projections of High School Graduates by State and Race/Ethnicity, 1992 to 2022

According to WICHE: Hispanic graduates from public schools in Texas numbered 84,566 in 2004-05, but within a decade they are projected to number more than 127,500, an increase of greater than 50 percent. This is not even the fastest rate of growth among racial/ethnic groups in Texas. The number of Asian/Pacific Islander graduates is projected to climb by 78 percent; and the number of American Indian/Alaska Native graduates is projected to grow by more than 65 percent over the same period. But because the totals of these groups in 2004-05 were relatively low, at 8,363 and 764 graduates, respectively, their growth, though explosive, does not have as significant an impact as that of the Hispanic population. Black non-Hispanic growth will also be rapid, as the number of graduates from that group is projected to climb by 43 percent above its 2004-05 level of 32,811. Meanwhile, White non-Hispanics will likely see substantial decreases in their numbers over the same timeframe, with projections showing a drop-off from 113,213 in 2004-05 to about 102,400 in 2014-15, a 9.5 percent decline.

Students who were coded as first time transfer in Fall 2010 on CBM001. Tracked back 6 years in CTC to see if they earned at least 30 hours. Not all of this cohort earned an associates' degree.

Transfers who earned an academic associates degree before transferring.Note that the THECB only reported Community College students who were First Time Transfer as well as had earned at least 30 hours from the community college they transferred from.

The UHCL PeopleSoft student history table captures ALL First Time Transfer students from a particular Community College, regardless of how many hours they earned there since that is information we are not privy to.

That would explain why our First Time Transfer figure is slightly higher.

Figure 11b continued: Area Community College Demographics Texas Public Universities that Local Area Community College Students Transfer to Fall 2010 Aggregated by UniversityData source: Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board

Of the 7,465 students tracked in fall 2010, over half (58 percent) of the local area Gulf Coast first time transfer students who earned at least 30 hours from their perspective community college attended a University of Houston institution. This figure suggests that local area community college students prefer the convenience of a location that is close to home when making the decision to transfer to a university. UH-Clear Lake ranked 3rd out of the 30 institutions that local area Gulf Coast students (834 students out of 7,465) transfer to.

Fall 2010 to Fall 2011 local area community college student migration report:Includes academic and technical associate degree students as well as those receiving certificates and their status the following fall after graduation. Please note that previous figures (Figure 11) captured only students who were coded as first time transfers in fall 2010 on CBM001 and tracked back 6 years to CTC to see if they earned at least 30 hours and transferred to a 4-year university regardless of whether or not they received a degree. These figures capture all CTC graduates fall 2010 and their status the following fall 2011.

Figure 12 continued: Area Community College Demographics Local Area Community College Student Migration Report Fall 2010 to Fall 2011

The greatest percentage of local area community college graduates tracked the following fall after graduation appear in the "not found" category (55.0 percent). However, for academic degree graduates the "not found" number decreases to 40.5 percent. Asian students graduating from a local area college represent the highest percentage (28.9) of students who migrate to a 4-year university. Migration data from local area community colleges closely coincide with statewide figures when determining the status of community college graduates the following fall after graduation. These figures represent challenges and opportunities for 4-year institutions that strive to encourage communitycollege graduates to further their education, especially considering the large number of technical graduates not furthering their education (71.1 percent).

The methodology used to produce the participation forecast has remained relativelyunchanged since 1979. It applies past enrollments to population projections bygeographic location, age, and race/ethnicity. Possible future differences in the rate ofhigh school graduation, increases in higher education participation by racial/ethnicgroups, or changes in local policies are not incorporated into this methodology. For thatreason, the forecast is conservative; it projects future enrollments if current trendscontinue.
