COMMUNICATION FOR TEACHING- A DIFFERENT TYPE OF COMMUNICATION

• TO COMMUNICATION BETWEEN TWO ENTITIES AT THE SAME LEVEL IS DIFFERENT FROM COMMUNICATION FOR TEACHING

• IN TEACHING THERE ARE TWO DISTINCT LEVELS.

• IT IS ASSUMED THAT

• THE TEACHER IS AT A HIGHER LEVEL OF A GIVER.

• THE STUDENT IS AT A LOWER LEVEL OF TAKER

• AS IF ALL DEVELOPMENT IN THE TEACHER HAS TAKEN PLACE AND THERE IS NO MORE TO GO

• AS IF THE STUDENT CAN BE JUST AS MUCH AS THE TEACHER AS BEEN AND CAN NOT GO ANY FURTHER

From complex to simple

• Simplify the subject by deconstructing the principles in to small real life experiences.

• You make a complex sentence where a simple one can do, only if you are chasing some kind of complex – either you have a superiority complex or you want the listener / reader to be inflicted with an inferiority complex. None of this amounts to healthy and effective communication, certainly not in teaching.

Teaching: Dialogue or Monologue?

Dialogue

• Learn from each other

• Learning is a social process

• Healthy competition

• Stimulus for good behaviour by presence of each other

• Teacher a good listener

• Moderate a discussion

• Teacher also learns

Monologue

• Learn only from teacher

• Learning is a selfish act

• Insular visions

• Isolation from the presence of the group

• Teacher just a speaker

• Cull discussions

• Teacher only teaches

Teaching with technology

Effective use of power point presentations

• Don’t sit back and play a video instead of teaching

• Never pack in too many slides

• Don’t write too much on a single slide

• Never read from a slide while presenting

• Include figures and illustrations if possible

• Don’t pack similar types of slides in sequence• A bulleted list may be followed by a picture followed by a table followed by an organ

gram followed by a graph
