The epicenter of the magnitude 8.9 event was located at 3.298 N, 95.779 E, 250 km (155 miles) SSE of Banda Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia. The quake generated a 10-meter-high tsunami hitting the northwest coast of Northern Sumatra. Starting 31 Dec, USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group 9 (ALCSG-9) and USS Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group 5 (ESG-5) began conducting airlift, sealift and medical missions in support of relief operations along the western coast of Banda Aceh. ALCSG-9 responsible for area from the northern tip of Aceh to Meulaboh in the south. ESG-5 is responsible from Meulaboh to an area approximately 60 miles to the south. USAID Assistance: As of 12 January, USAID had committed over $31 million in assitance to Indonesia. In the health sector, assistance included grants to IFRC/Indonesian Red Cross, UNICEF, World Health Organization, International Organization of Migration, International Medical Corps, Church World Service, Save the Children/US, CARE, Mercy Corps, Johns Hopkins University, the Naval Medical Research Unit, and International Relief and Development. 26 Dec: A great earthquake occurred at 00:58:50 (UTC) on December 26, 2004. The epicenter of the magnitude 8.9 event was located at 3.298 N, 95.779 E, 250 km
