Good afternoon parents, carers and
students,
It is been an amazing week for celebrating
public education. Incorporating NAIDOC
week into these celebrations has meant lots
of activities, eating, socialising, learning and
performing for our students.
Thank you to those of you who were able to
participate in our reading workshop for
parents on Monday afternoon. It was a
wonderful opportunity for you all to meet Jo-
Anne Dooner and share in her knowledge
and our reading journey as a school. Jo did
an exceptional job of explaining the
importance of parental talk and world
experiences on reading comprehension and
building background knowledge. We hope
to organise another parent workshop for
you all in the next couple of weeks.
Our students in stage 2 and 3 have had the
opportunity to go and experience some
lessons over at both the boys and girls high
school this week. This has allowed our
student to access expert teachers in a high
school setting for science, art and English.
We look forward to continuing to provide
these opportunities to our students.
The East Hills Community breakfast, that
was funded by the SCIM (School
Community In Motion) project, was a great
success yesterday morning. It was
wonderful to see our parents socialising
with each other, their children and our staff.
Enormous thanks to our staff who assisted
in the organisation and preparation for this
event. We are looking at organising another
breakfast before the end of the year.
The students showcased their learning and
celebration of public education at our school
assembly yesterday. The variety of learning
experiences, skills, talent and opportunities
reflected the impact our teachers are having
on growing well rounded citizens for the
future. I was proud of our student’s
confidence, growth and the quality they
shared with you all.
Just a reminder that when your child is
absent from school, you are required to
write a note explaining the absence and
attach any supporting documentation such
as a doctor’s certificate. Please try to send
this the day your child returns to school.
Congratulations to our 2 golf teams who
participated and won the golf tournament on
Tuesday. Thank you for representing our

school well and a big thankyou to Mrs
Beynon for transporting the students.
Please note that the hall stage is under
construction and our school assemblies will
recommence when it is completed. Thank
you for your patience with this project.

JEANS FOR GENES DAY
On Friday, 4 August, we are asking
students to bring in a gold coin donation to
support the charity ‘Jeans for Genes.’ In
return they may wear jeans to school.
The Children’s Medical Research Institute
conducts fundamental scientific research
into the genetics of human health and
disease. Their research efforts include:
understanding and developing more
effective treatments for cancer;
understanding and trialling therapies for
rare diseases like OTC deficiency;
discovering the genes vital for the
development of a healthy baby in order to
one day prevent conditions such as cleft
palate; and unlocking the mysteries of how
brain cells communicate and what goes
wrong in conditions such as epilepsy and
schizophrenia.
SCHOOL SPECTACULAR
Schools Spectacular 2017 tickets are now
officially on sale to the public! We
encourage you to come along and watch
the students from East Hills Public School
perform live. Schools Spectacular are
aiming to have 32, 000 people come and
watch this year’s production titled Own the
Moment. We encourage you to go to the
Ticketek website to purchase your seats
online.
More information for the involved Stage 1
students will be distributed after Miss
Hickman attends the teachers meeting in
Sydney in August.
CARE MONKEY
As you know we take the health and safety
of our students very seriously. As such we
are adopting a new health and safety
application named CareMonkey.
CareMonkey is an innovative parent-
controlled electronic medical form for
schools, clubs and other groups with a duty
of care. It’s an electronic version of the
paper-based forms you currently need to fill
in for excursions, camps, enrolments…and
the like. It provides parents with the
opportunity to update medical information
promptly and accurately while providing the
school with instant access to the emergency
information provided by you. We will be
using the CareMonkey app in the best
interests of the children whilst also reducing
the burden on parents to fill out the same
information on multiple forms throughout the
year.
Parents can use a PC, laptop, tablet or
smart phone to enter the details including:
emergency contacts
medical contacts
medical checklist including asthma, allergies, seizures, diabetes
health and ambulance insurance details
notes and other care instructions from parents
and more…
As a parent we will send you an email from
the CareMonkey system inviting you to
enter the details for your child in an
electronic medical form.

From the school’s perspective, this
information will only be accessible by the
relevant teacher(s) for your child. However,
if you choose, you will also be able to share
this information with anyone else you trust
with your child's care - their grandparents,
their child-minder, their sports club etc.
Importantly, you choose who accesses this
information.
You don’t need to do anything until you
receive the email requesting the
information. Please feel free to contact the
school if you have any questions. You can
also visit the CareMonkey website for more
information: www.caremonkey.com
We appreciate your assistance.
KINDERGARTEN TRANSITION
East Hills Public School’s Kindergarten
transition program will begin in week 7 of
term 3. This program offers beginning
students a chance to make connections
with their teachers, peers and the best start
to a quality education. Call the office now to
enrol your child for Kindergarten 2018.
NAIDOC WEEK
As part of our NAIDOC week celebrations,
our school has participated in cooking
lemon myrtle and wattle seed pancakes to
playing indigenous games. Each class is
working on a canvas artwork that will come
together to create an amazing rainbow
serpent. Keep on eye out for this fantastic
artwork in the upcoming weeks when it is
displayed proudly in our school. Thank you
to Aunty Carol for the lemon myrtle and
wattle seed for the students to use in their
cooking activity, as well as cooking some
delicious lemon myrtle and macadamia
shortbread biscuits for our staff. The final
part of our NAIDOC week celebrations will
be held on Wednesday 6th September 2017
when Koomurri Dance company conduct an
incursion for all students and staff at our
school to participate in. A big thank goes to
Anna Schluke who is a parent at our school
who donated a lucky door prize she won to
have Koomurri Dance company run the
incursion at our school.

JACK NEWTON JUNIOR GOLF
GALA DAY
Congratulations to the students in Kokoda
who attended the golf day last Tuesday.
Everyone had a great time and improved
their skills across the day. Our teams did
very well with Mohamed winning the
Longest Drive for boys, Layla winning
Longest Drive for the girls and our Green
Team winning the overall points for the day.
EDUCATION WEEK VISIT TO EAST
HILLS BOYS HIGH SCHOOL
On Monday, Gallipoli and Kokoda attended
the Boys High School for science and
computer lessons from Year 7 and 9
students. We made lava lamps, slime,
LEGO robotics, ooblek and stress balls.
Thanks to the boys who ran the activities
and the teachers who welcomed us into
their classrooms.
PSSA GIRLS AND BOYS SOCCER
The PSSA boys soccer teams did
exceptionally well the last fortnight. Both
junior and senior boys soccer teams played
an outstanding game against Revesby P.S,
with seniors winning 1-0 and Juniors also
winning 2-0. Round 7 boys’ soccer was
forfeited to our advantage due to Revesby
South attending school camp.
PSSA girls’ soccer effort was nothing short
of amazing. Unfortunately our teams lost to
Revesby P.S in round 6.
However our fantastic girls senior team in
defence in round 7 made sure that the ball
didn't come close to our goal when playing
with Revesby South P.S winning 5-2. Great
effort teams! Unfortunately our junior girls
lost this one.
All around it was an awesome game and I
can't wait to see the next one.
P&C NEWS
Our next P&C meeting will be in Term 3 on
Monday 4 September at 9.15am we hope
you are able to join us.
EARN AND LEARN
Don’t forget East Hills Public School is
again participating in the Woolworths Earn
and Learn program between the 26 July
and 19 September. Please collect the earn
and learn stickers and stick them on the
sticker sheet. The sticker sheets or stickers
can be dropped into the school collection
box in the school foyer.
