“Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.”Our series on children’s films wouldn’t be complete without the highest-grossing animation of all time – if you haven’t seen Frozen, where have you been?! Anna and Elsa’s story illustrates our next Beatitude on Film and is also the perfect tool to introduce its captive young audience to the idea of discernment. This Beatitude is not particularly about the virtue of chastity, but more about singleness of purpose and desire. Helping our young people settle to discern what they truly wish to do with their lives, in light of God’s desire for them, could make this one of the most important Beatitudes. You know we will offer a special ‘frozen treat.’

The Joy of Love: A Look at the Pope’s Latest WorkThursday, June 23 at 3:30 PM (Clergy)

& 7 PM (Public)In the Welcome CenterFr. James Keanan, SJ

The recent papal letter Amsoris Laetitia asks all mem-bers of the church to reflect on the meaning of love and its expression in our lives. For some this document is freeing and seems long over due. For others it seems just license to do what ever we want. Fr. James Keenan, SJ, a professor of Moral Theology and Ethics, will be with us to give some insight into what the document said and didn’t say. Part of his talk will be on the role of conscience in one’s moral life. A Free Will Offering will be taken up.

Fr. James Keenan, S.J., holds the Gasson Chair in the Theology Department at Boston College. He is the author of several other books including Moral Wisdom: Lessons and Texts from the Catholic Tradition, and over two hun-dred articles, essays, and reviews.

BOOK OF THE MONTH The Joy of Love (Amoris Laetitia)

By: Pope FrancisTeaching the Catholic faith can be quite a challenge if you lack an adequate understanding of the Catholic faith yourself. And given the fact that the Catechism of the Catholic Church is over 900 pages in length, it’s no wonder that Catholics struggle to comprehend their faith.

A Well-Built Faith — creatively developed around a construction theme — makes it easy for Catholics to know what they believe and to feel confident in sharing those beliefs. This 18-chapter book by master teacher Joe Paprocki follows the structure of the four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (Creed, Sacraments, Morality, and Prayer), making it a wonderful resource for learning about and teaching the Catholic faith. Highly informative and very fun at the same time, A Well-Built Faith is a must-have tool for developing the Catholic faith.

Available in our bookstore.

Just a few words on Mass etiquette.Attire for Mass

With the summer months upon us and the warmer temperatures settling in, people often wonder what is the appropriate dress for Mass. First and most importantly, clean and neat is the first rule. (Of course if you are coming in from work, and truly had no time to change you are welcome as you are!) In the summer, if you wish to wear shorts they should be below the knee length. Polo shirts, short sleeve shirts, and t-shirts are fine as well however, please check the message on the t-shirt before wearing it. The guiding rule should always be: does it respect the gathered “Body of Christ.” Christ is fully present in the community when it gathers for Mass. Guiding principles: Clean, neat, appropriate length, and inspiring messages on any shirt!

When can I leave Mass?As noted above when gathered at Mass, the whole community is “The Body of Christ.” Once upon a time, we used to say ‘get in for the Gospel, leave after Communion.’ From the first note of the gathering hymn until dismissed and we disperse, Christ is fully present in the gathered people. Just as we would be not be late for Jesus and never walk out on Him, we should make every effort to be on time and not walk out of Mass until the priest processes out. Christ is fully present in both the community and in the priest so to leave early is not fully participating in the celebration of Christ still present with us. Of course emergencies occur, but when arriving late or leaving early happens, we should re-examine our commitment to Christ and renew our commitment to being fully present at Mass.
