“The future of nuclear power in South Carolina is happening at SCE&G.”

Jeff ArchieSCE&G Chief Nuclear Officer

Clean, safe and reliable energy for the future.

Serving our community and caring for each other are among SCANA’s sacred values that

V.C. Summer employees personify. Committed to being

a good neighbor, our community involvement goes

beyond the generation of clean, safe and

reliable energy.

In the spirit of community service, we’re dedicating

this issue to reflect on some of the good works V.C.

Summer employees and SCE&G more broadly have

accomplished in 2015. We’ve shared some of this

with you along the way, but it really impressed upon

me when I thought about it all collectively.

For example, V.C. Summer employees weatherized

a local resident’s home to make it safer and more

energy efficient, “blitzed” Midlands high schools to

educate students about STEM careers, collected

school supplies to help local students get a strong

start to the school year, participated in career days

at area schools, and provided tours of the nuclear

construction site for students from Fairfield County

and beyond. The following list is just a snapshot of

organizations and causes in Fairfield County that

we regularly support through community service.

• Lake Monticello Family Practice

• Fairfield Behavioral Health Center

• Fairfield County Chamber of Commerce

• Fairfield County Memorial Hospital

• Palmetto Trail

• Town of Ridgeway – Pig on the Ridge Festival

• Employee Volunteerism

• Palmetto Trail

• Blood Drives

• Mentoring, job shadowing, career fairs

• Homework Centers

This outreach is possible largely because of the

continued successful operation of Unit 1 and

progress of our nuclear construction project. I’m

proud of our employees’ dedication to V.C. Summer

and to the communities we serve. I’m equally proud

to work for a company that encourages volunteerism

and embraces philanthropy.

The Bow Tie Club visited V.C. Summer in February 2015 to learn about nuclear energy and careers in the industry. The Bow Tie Club is a mentoring program for young men in the Fairfield Central School District grades seven through 12 led by Superintendent of Education

J.R. Green. The club is based on the Five Wells of Leadership for young men: well read, well spoken, well dressed, well balanced and well traveled.

Community Coalition Marks Seven Years of Meeting After being assembled in May 2009, the V.C. Summer Community Coalition continued to meet throughout 2015. This small group of people who live in western Fairfield County meet monthly at V.C. Summer to engage in open dialogue with SCE&G leaders about nuclear operations and development as well as other topics of interest.

The Community Coalition is one of the many ways V.C. Summer maintains open communication with its neighbors. SCE&G Chief Nuclear Officer Jeff Archie, who is a Jenkinsville native, regularly attends the meetings. Additionally, other speakers throughout the company as well as external guests visit with the Coalition to discuss various subjects. Last year’s speakers included Major Jeffrey Wade with the S.C. Highway Patrol and Lynne Douglass with Lake Monticello Family Practice. They also learned more about V.C. Summer’s robust emergency planning program, upgrades done during the refueling and maintenance outage to ensure continued safe and reliable performance, and progress of the nuclear construction project.

Since opening its doors to the community in August 2014, Lake Monticello Family Practice has provided critically needed health care to Jenkinsville and neighboring areas on the western side of Fairfield County.

SCE&G’s initial donation of $70,000 followed by another $20,000 in February 2015 has helped support primary and preventive medical services for local residents. This includes the purchase of an EKG machine that has been instrumental in preventing heart attacks and strokes.

“I appreciate all that SCE&G does,” said Lynne Douglass, director of Lake Monticello Family Practice. “They are a pillar in the community job-wise and for taking care of the community.”

Local Healthcare Facility Featured in Magazine

Lake Monticello Family Practice Director Lynne Douglass was featured in SCANA’s Insights Magazine in the fall of 2015 to highlight the importance of the rural health care facility, which SCE&G has supported.

In May 2015, volunteers from South Carolina Electric & Gas Company, including V.C. Summer employees, weatherized the home of longtime Jenkinsville resident Hattie Bell.

SCE&G joined forces with the S.C. Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity and Carolina Community Actions, Inc. to make it all happen. This included replacing windows, repairing the heating and air conditioning, installing ceiling fans, caulking around doors and windows, repairing and replacing electrical switches, and trimming trees on the property. As a result, Bell’s home is safer and more energy efficient.

In August 2015, members of the North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NAYGN) at SCE&G’s V.C. Summer Nuclear Station delivered boxes filled with school supplies to local schools. V.C. Summer employees donated the supplies during the annual back-to-school drive.

The following schools received donated supplies just in time for the school year: McCrorey-Liston School of Technology, Newberry Elementary, Kelly Miller Elementary School, and Pomaria-Garmany Elementary School.

South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G) presented Fairfield County a check in January 2016 for $25.8 million for 2015 property taxes.

Property taxes fund the local school district, road improvements, and other critical public services.

V.C. Summer Unit 1, which has been in commercial operation since 1984, currently employs about 800 SCE&G employees and contractors. The two new reactors are projected to add about 800 permanent jobs when they start generating electricity.

Robert Justice, SCE&G General Manager of Nuclear Plant Operations, presented the 2015 property tax check to Fairfield County. The V.C. Summer Chapter of NAYGN once again teamed up with Midlands Education and Business Alliance to coordinate the second annual High School Blitz.

On just one day in September, more than 55 V.C. Summer employees visited 3,800

students at 22 different high schools in Fairfield, Richland, Newberry and Lexington. The nuclear professionals representing various backgrounds taught students about the benefits of nuclear energy and potential careers at V.C. Summer Nuclear Station and throughout the industry.
