FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTORWelcome to the first productions of Colorado Ballet’s 54th year! Following our most successful performance season ever, the 2014-2015 promises to offer something for everyone, with classic and child-friendly productions like A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Nutcracker and Peter and the Wolf to the spine-tingling Dracula and the powerful and athletic collection of ballets in Ballet MasterWorks.
Christopher Weeldon originally created the choreography for A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Colorado Ballet in 1997. The Company is pleased to present this Shakespearian classic as it continues to delight audiences with its story about mischief, romance and comedy. This fanciful production also includes
a score by Felix Mendelssohn, performed live by the Colorado Ballet Orchestra and the Colorado Children’s Chorale. This ballet is pure magic!
Back by popular demand, Colorado Ballet presents one of the most theatrical ballets ever performed in Denver, the horror classic Dracula during Halloween weekend. Dracula features choreography by Michael Pink and music by Philip Feeney, performed live by the Colorado Ballet Orchestra. Come sink your teeth into Bram Stoker’s Gothic thriller with seductive vampires, frightening mental patients and the king of the undead himself, Count Dracula. You will see why so many of our patrons request this production year after year.
After Dracula, I encourage you to join us for a dazzling spectacle of glittering snowflakes and shimmering sugarplums in The Nutcracker. Come take a journey to the Land of Sweets with Colorado Ballet’s dancers and Tchaikovsky’s extraordinary arrangement performed live by the Colorado Ballet Orchestra.
In the spring, don’t miss Ballet MasterWorks, a collection of works from the masters of music and dance showcasing our dancers’ artistry and athleticism and powerful live music performed by the Colorado Ballet Orchestra. Ballet MasterWorks includes Concerto Barocco, by George Balanchine and music by Johann Sebastian Bach; Fancy Free, by Jerome Robbins with music by Leonard Bernstein; and a work to be announced. You don’t need to go to New York to see dancing of this caliber, you can see it right here in Denver with Colorado Ballet!
In March, we will close with the irresistible family adventure Peter and the Wolf, choreographed by Michael Smuin and music by Sergei Prokofiev. The production will open with a special performance of Bruch Violin Concerto No.1, choreographed by Clark Tippet featuring music by Max Bruch.
Thank you for attending our first productions of the 2014-2015 season and for supporting Colorado Ballet. I hope you enjoy the dancing and musical talent of our performers!
Gil BoggsArtistic Director
P.S. We encourage you to come visit our new dance rehearsal and training facility at 11th and Santa Fe Drive. Read more about our new home in the article in this program.

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Welcome to A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Dracula! As we begin our 54th season, the Colorado Ballet Board of Trustees is proud to bring you technically-challenging classical ballet performances and innovative contemporary works. As board co-chairs, we are honored to be a part of Colorado Ballet’s ongoing momentum. Last year, Colorado Ballet had its most successful performance season in the history of the organization, breaking attendance and revenue records. This summer, we moved our new state-of-the-art dance training and rehearsal studio in Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe. The new facility puts Colorado Ballet on the map as a world-class ballet company and academy. If you have not yet seen our new building, we encourage you to stop by for a tour, event or Academy class!
Through the Colorado Ballet Academy, we encourage the love of dance in students of every age. The Academy offers classes for children as young as three as well as a wide range of adult dance classes and a pre-professional ballet program. Academy students have the opportunity to audition for roles in several professional productions each year. The Academy not only teaches dance, it encourages the love of dance in every student.
Not all Coloradans have the opportunity to experience the magic of excellence in dance. That’s why Colorado Ballet’s outreach programs provide opportunities for in-need students, teachers, family and individuals with disabilities to take dance classes and attend performances. We impact nearly 60,000 individuals every year.
We hope that you enjoy today’s performance and will consider making a donation to Colorado Ballet to ensure the future of high quality dance and the cultural vibrancy of our state. Thank you for supporting Colorado Ballet!

Synopsis
Act I, Prologue: The Court of Duke Theseus Egeus, Hermia’s father, demands that she marry Demetrius against her wishes; she wants to marry her sweetheart Lysander. The Duke of Athens, Theseus, agrees with Egeus. Demetrius wants to marry Hermia, but is pursued by Helena. To escape, Lysander and Hermia flee into the woods, but Helena informs Demetrius of their flight. Demetrius follows in hot pursuit, with Helena close behind him.
Act I, Scene 1: The Woods The lovers wander deep into the woods, watched by Puck, servant to Oberon, King of the Fairies, as sprites and fairies make their way to the court of their King and his Queen, Titania.
Act I, Scene 2: A Forest Clearing Titania and Oberon arrive at their court, but all is not well. Oberon admires Titania’s new attendant, an Indian changeling child. Oberon insists she give the child to him, but she refuses, taking the child with her. Enraged, Oberon plans his revenge. He sends Puck to find a flower which causes the victim to become infatuated with whomever he first lays eyes upon. Hearing mortals approaching, Oberon conceals himself.
Oberon witnesses Demetrius searching for Hermia, pursued by Helena. Feeling that perhaps he can help, Oberon follows them. Meanwhile, Puck finds a magical flower and presents it to Oberon. Thrilled, he plots his revenge on Titania. Demetrius and Helena appear again, and Oberon sends Puck after them with a petal from the flower. Sensing the approach of Titania, he hides and watches.
Titania is weary from her encounter with Oberon; her fairies sing her to sleep with a lullaby. They keep the changeling close-by, still suspicious of Oberon’s intentions. The fairies leave their sleeping Queen, Oberon drops some of the pollen from the magical flower into Titania’s eyes and quickly vanishes.
Meanwhile, Hermia and Lysander are lost and need a place to rest. Hermia, although deeply in love with Lysander, reminds him they are not yet married and sends him to sleep at a respectable distance.
In flies Pluck, still searching for Helena and Demetrius. Mistaking the sleeping Lysander for Demetrius, Puck drops some pollen in his eyes and leaves, satisfied that his work has been accomplished. Demetrius, still pursued by Helena, appears. He pushes her away and runs deeper into the woods, leaving her deserted and alone. Despondent, she spots Lysander sleeping nearby and rushes over to wake him. Upon seeing her, Lysander declares his love for her. Hermia then awakens; frightened at seeing Lysander is no longer there, she runs off in search of him.
Four village rustics appear, passing through the forest. They soon find themselves completely lost. Oberon and Puck watch from above, ready to set their plan in motion. Puck picks one of the villagers, Bottom the Weaver, as his victim, and turns him into an ass, frightening off his friends. Puck then leads Bottom to Titania’s bedside and watches in anticipation with Oberon. Titania awakens to the donkey’s braying and falls passionately in love with him.

Act II, Scene 1: A Forest ClearingStill searching for Lysander, Hermia encounters Demetrius and demands to know Lysander’s whereabouts. Getting no answer from him, she storms away. Exhausted, Demetrius lies down to sleep. Trying to rectify Puck’s mistake, Oberon drops the pollen into Demetrius’ eyes. In rushes Helena, pursued by an infatuated Lysander. Demetrius awakens and instantly falls in love with Helena. The woman he once despised, he now adores; she finds herself with two ardent suitors. Angry and upset, she tries to fight off the two men, when in hobbles a tired Hermia. Oberon, realizing the situation, becomes furious with Puck. Using his magical powers to hypnotize the lovers, he puts them to sleep with their correct partners. Oberon, now tired of these games, decides it’s time to awaken his queen and teach her a lesson. Titania, seeing the beast she has slept with and feeling extremely foolish, agrees to give the changeling child to Oberon.
As dawn breaks, they disappear into the depths of the magical woods. Before following them, Puck removes the spell he has placed on Bottom.
As it is Hermia’s wedding day, bridesmaids and grooms are out searching for the lovers. Theseus and his wife Hippolyta follow and, discovering the lovers asleep, send the grooms to wake them. Theseus is happy to have found his lost subjects. Seeing Demetrius now content to marry Helena, he dismisses Egeus’ objections to Lysander and leads the four lovers back to the court to be married.
Act III: The Court of Theseus that EveningThe bridesmaids and court children prepare Hermia and Helena for their weddings. The lovers are married by Duke Theseus, and the court dances in celebration. Equally skilled in baroque to contemporary repertoire, Ms. Balestrieri has appeared with the National Symphony in the Kennedy Center, performed recitals at the 92nd Street Y and the Phillips Collection, and been broadcast on NPR’s Performance Today and Colorado Public Radio’s Colorado Spotlight. She has been featured with major period instrument ensembles throughout the U.S., including Opera Lafayette, New York Collegium, Concert Royal of New York, the Smithsonian Chamber Players, the Folger Consort, the Washington Bach Consort, and American Bach Soloists. Recent Colorado performances include those with the Colorado Symphony, Fort Collins Symphony, Boulder Bach Festival, Pro Musica Colorado, Seicento Baroque, and Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado. Akira Endo 1938-2014With sadness, Colorado Ballet notes the passing of former Music Director Akira Endo on April 3, 2014.
Maestro Endo joined our company in 2001, conducting most of Colorado Ballet’s performances until his retirement 2006.
Maestro Endo was concurrently director of orchestral studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder. In a distinguished career prior to his work in Colorado he had served a highly acclaimed, decade-long tenure as Music Director of American Ballet Theatre from 1969-79 where he conducted the American debuts of Mikhail Baryshnikov and Natalia Makarova and worked with most of the other notable
dancers of the day including Nureyev and Fonteyn. He also had been Music Director of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Miami City Ballet, and the symphony orchestras of Louisville, Austin, San Antonio, Long Beach, and Hamilton (Ontario). He was guest conductor of major orchestras all over the world.
His conducting was characterized by a distinctive elegance and a quiet but highly focused economy of gesture. He was superbly attuned to choreography and the needs of individual dancers, who repaid him with esteem and affection. Orchestra musicians and conducting colleagues who had known him here and in the many other places he performed respected his musicianship highly and treasured his quirky humor and generosity.

David Jaramillo 1934-2014David Jaramillo, the longtime Property Master of Colorado Ballet passed away on June 24. 2014. David had worked for the ballet for the last 25 years.
David’s love of the opera and the stage led him to join the ranks of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Union
(IATSE) at the age of 18. David met his wife, Bobby, during a tour of Hello Dolly! and they both moved to New York City. In New York, David was a part of the original productions of many shows including Jesus Christ Superstar, Company, Peter Pan and worked with legendary performers such as Mary Martin, Ethel Merman, Robert Preston and many more.
After the birth of their three daughters, David and Bobby moved back to Denver where he continued to work as a stagehand.
David fought various forms of cancer for the past 15 years and yet he never missed a performance due to his illness. He is possibly the only property master to know all his prop cues to The Nutcracker by the music alone. He also loved opera, particularly Rigoletto, Carmen and La Boheme. David’s passion for the arts has kept him strong and he will be missed not by his family but all the dancers, production crew and artistic staff of Colorado Ballet as well as his fellow IATSE union members.
