Civil Engineers are involved in the plan- ning, analysis, design, and problem solving of a variety of projects that directly serve the needs of societies for build- ings, bridges, roads, water supply systems, dams, canals, sanitation systems, environmental protection systems, and risk management systems. To meet the demands of the rapid developments in the field, civil engineers must be up to date in their knowledge, motivated self-educators, and involved in life long learning. The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Sharjah offers a Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE) program that prepares graduates to confidently confront current and future challenges in an excit- ing profession and equip them with advanced knowledge, practical skills, knowledge discovery, and application skills. The MSCE program is officially accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The Department has well qualified faculty and lecturers with many years of academic and practical experience both re- gionally and internationally. The expertise of the academic staff spans the main disciplines of modern civil & environmental engineering. In addition, the department has laboratory facilities that are furnished with the state-of-the-art equipment and analytical instruments in support of advanced experimental work for teaching, research, and community service. The laboratories are also staffed with qualified and well-trained laboratory assistants, technicians, and engineers. Program ObjectivesThe CEE Department aims at offering degree programs that are recognized and accredited, preparing graduates for professional life and advanced graduate studies, and responding to the research and development needs of the com-munity, especially in the UAE and the region:

The overall objective of the Master’s Program is to provide the opportunity for qualified engineers to advance their knowledge and knowledge discovery skills in the modern civil engineering specializations. The program supports the development of quality and relevant research, especially applied research. In addition, the program aims to satisfy the demand for highly educated professionals who can contribute to and lead the scientific and technological development of the UAE and the region.

Graduates of the MSCE Program will be able to fulfill the following educational objectives:

PEO1: Will successfully assume leading roles in professional practice, and research and development.

PEO2: Will contribute to fulfilling the specialized needs of the civil engineering and related industries in the UAE and the region using their acquired advanced knowledge and skills.

PEO3: Will pursue scientific inquiry and lifelong learning opportuni¬ties, actively participa¬te in scientific and profes-sional activities, and undertake further research and doctoral studies in civil engineering or related areas.

Program OutcomesUpon successful completion of the MSc. in Civil and Environmental engineering, the student will have developed:

Delivery ModeThe MSCE Program is offered in two modes:

1. Full-time basis, which is suitable for engineers wishing to devote their time on their studies and research work; and

2. Part-time basis, which is more suitable for working professionals.

The delivery mode is course-based, carefully designed to advance the knowledge and skills of students in their respec-tive area of specialization, offered in classroom typically at evening time to suit the part-time students who are working outside.

Admission Criteria to the Masters Program in Civil Engineering The Department Research & Graduate Studies Committee may grant regular or conditional enrollment for graduate study leading toward a Master degree to applicants who satisfy the following academic qualifications and criteria:

1. Have a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or a closely-related field*) from a recognized college or university with an overall undergraduate grade point average of 3.00 (out of 4.0) or higher. The table below lists the transi-tional undergraduate courses as required for entry into intended specialization.

2. The Department graduate program committee may grant conditional admittance to applicants whose GPA is 2.5 or higher and may require a GPA of at least 3.00 in the last 30 credits of their major courses, including courses that are related to their desired specialization. Conditionally accepted applicants must attain a grade point average of 3.00 or higher during their first semester with at least 9 credit hours before being fully admitted into the program.

3. Applicants must provide certified transcripts from the institution where they received their B.Sc. degree, along with course descriptions in addition to letter(s) of reference.

4. Meet the applicable University admission criteria. Applicants are required to attain a minimum TOFEL score (paper test) of 550 (or equivalent). Applicants with TOFEL score of 530 (or equivalent) may be provisionally admitted to the program provided that they achieve a TOFEL score of 550 (or equivalent) by the end of their first semester in the program

5. Have been reviewed and recommended for acceptance by the “Research & Graduate Studies Committee” in the Department and approved by the “Department Council”.

Full-time candidates of the Master degree must complete their requirements within a minimum of 3 semesters and a maximum of 10 semesters from the date they are admitted into the program.

*These candidates are required to enroll in prerequisite courses, which they have not taken in their prior studies, as deemed necessary by the Department’s “Research & Graduate Studies Committee” and approved by the College and University. These prerequisite courses should be completed within no more than two semesters (full time) and will not be considered as part of the required credit load for the graduate degree.

Program Structure and RequirementsThe Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Sharjah offered the Master Program start-ing Fall 2004/2005. The MSCE program is officially accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The degree is titled: “Master of Science in Civil Engineering”.

The MSCE Program requires completion of 33 credit hours, which consists of 24 credit hours of course work in addition to 9 credit hours of thesis. The courses in the curricula are distributed among three sets of requirements, which are:

1. Compulsory General Courses Requirements (courses taken by all students in the program)

2. Compulsory Specialized Courses Requirements (courses taken by students in their respective stream /area of specialization in the program); and

3. Elective Courses Requirements (courses taken by students from a list/basket of courses)

The minimum degree requirement is 33 credit hours distributed as follows:

Appendix A

Minimum University Admission Requirements for Master’s Program

A. GPA Requirements:A minimum CGPA of 3.0 (out of 4.0 point scale or its established equivalent) is required for admission to graduate programs.

Probationary Admittance May be Grated to:A student with CGPA of 2.5 or higher, may be provisionally admitted to as Master’s program provided the following:

• The student takes maximum of six (6) credit hours in the first semester during which he/she also takes intensive English whereby they must achieve an average score of “B” in the credit courses taken.

• If this provision is not met, the student is dismissed.

A student with CGPA between 2.5 and 2.99 and a TOEFL score of 550, or its equivalent using a standardized test ap-proved by the MHESR, can take a maximum of 9 credit hours in the first semester. He/she must achieve a semester average score of “B” in the credit courses taken to continue in the program. If not the student is dismissed.

B. English Proficiency Requirement:A TOEFL score of 550, ILETS score of 6.0, or the equivalent of another standardized test approved by the MHESR, is required of all students admitted to a Master’s program with the following exceptions:

• A native speaker of English who has completed his/her undergraduate education in an English medium institution in a country where English is the official language.

• A student admitted to and graduated from an English medium institution that can provide evidence of acquiring a TOEFL score of 500, or its standardized equivalent approved by the MHESR, upon admission to the undergraduate program.
