“Aliquippa is one of these little towns most people will never ever hear of, but you know of many people who come from here,” Sabatini says. “It’s an immigrant community from the early twentieth century; we were raised to be hard working and strive for the best. The mills are gone, but the work ethic is still there. It’s indicative of the spirit of this town.”

Sabatini, who has worked in the cemetery business for more than 30 years and is well versed in memorial construction, was sought out by a group of Aliquippa citizens who wished to build a monument to honor some of the town’s outstanding citizens. The project had been the dream of former Aliquippa resident Milo Rodich, who organized the effort through a group he founded, called the California Aliquippa Alumni Association (CAAA). The CAAA is a group of Californians who hail from Aliquippa that allows them to connect with each other and celebrate their roots.

This past May, the monument was dedicated before nearly 300 attendees in a space called “Legends Plaza” at Aliquippa’s Hopewell High School. It honors ten outstanding citizens from the community: Mike Ditka; Henry Mancini; Drs. Stephen, Wallace and Michael Zernich; Dr. Jesse Steinfeld; Dr. James Frank; Tony Dorsett; C.J. Betters; and Bill Koman. A plaque observing Milo Rodich for his work on the project and service to the community is also featured.

The honoree wall is constructed of limestone and sandstone. It bears 10 illuminated bronze plaques expertly crafted by Cold Spring Granite, each describing the lives and achievements of the aforementioned individuals. Asked how he chose Cold Spring for the plaques, Sabatini said, “I have been doing business with Cold Spring for years. Raymond Leach, our rep in this region, was instrumental in going to bat for the project.”

“While these ten individuals are recognized on the wall, I think it was Milo Rodich’s intent that this would serve to reflect the spirit of the community overall – a symbol of achievement.”

Bronze plaques from Cold Spring Granite help tell the story of ten of the community’s accomplished citizens.

If there is one thing Aliquippa, Pennsylvania is not short on, it’s role models. The relatively small community located just north of Pittsburgh has been home to many accomplished Americans, from athletes to government and civic leaders to physicians and entertainers. What is it about Aliquippa’s culture that fosters such a record of achievement? Lifelong resident Dennis Sabatini attributes it to the strong work ethic of families who live in the community, which was formerly driven by a busy steel milling industry.

Partnering With Local Company, Cold Spring Granite’s Mesabi Black® Becomes an Instant FavoriteAs a leading quarrier and fabricator of natural stone, Cold Spring Granite has always sought to align themselves with partner companies that value their mission and thrive through ingenuity and determination. Motivated by their customers’ success, they continue to embrace and develop technology, while introducing new products that best serve this ever-evolving marketplace.

Murphy Granite Carving, a precision crafter of memorials, headstones and monuments, expressed interest in partnering with Cold Spring Granite to promote the company’s reliable bestseller granite, Mesabi Black. Quarried right here in Minnesota, Mesabi Black offers customers a readily available option that has a more sophisticated and conventional feel than other stone. Furthermore, the deep black coloring provides a rich contrast for carving and lettering memorials.

With sales of this stone gradually on the rise, the cross-promotion with Murphy would be able to turn this gradual increase into instant growth. Don Calhoun, President of Murphy Granite explains the idea behind the promotion. “There aren’t many domestic black granite stones available, so we wanted to get people excited about buying local.”

With that, Murphy created a promotion emphasizing the stone’s unique grain, and home-grown appeal. Within two months, orders had far exceeded expectations. “In the history of my marketing experience, I have never seen a promotion go so well,” said Calhoun of the inquiries. What resulted was nothing short of amazing. Murphy’s promotion took off and soon after they were seeing over a 1000 percent increase in sales and over 2,000 percent in quantity. Furthermore, these weren’t just new customers alone; prior customers who had already chosen their stone also switched over to this classic version.

Cold Spring Granite was proud of the outcome achieved with Murphy, and was reminded that in the end, it’s all about client satisfaction. The success not only came from producing quality granite, but mainly from the persistence and innovation from its partnerships and clients.

While Mesabi Black remains popular, it represents one of many colors available for memorial products. To learn more about Cold Spring Granite’s offerings, visit www.coldspringgranite.com
