Cognitive science jest interdyscyplinarną dziedziną naukową, wytworzoną przez unifikację nauk szczegółowych zajmujących się systemami poznawczymi ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem człowieka i systemów sztucznych takich, jak komputery. Celem kognitywistyki jest całościowe spojrzenie na zagadnienie umysłu, tzn. zagadnienia poznania w ogóle (możliwości poznawcze, procesy empiryczne, strukturę myślenia), powstawania umysłu i funkcjonowania jego. Celem towarzyszącym jest budowa sztucznej inteligencji, w sensie maszyny, która wykazywałaby myślenie i inteligencję taką, jaką spotykamy u człowieka. http://www.kognitywistyka.net/kognitywistyka.html

Kognitywistyka jest znana z tego, że ma problemy z samodefinicją.
