This is yet another example how DNA sequencing is revealingthe hidden secrets surrounding those pests we all work so hardto eliminate. Similar work is currently underway with bed bugs, and readers will be well aware of the rat tail testing being doneat the Universities of Reading and Huddersfield to establishrodenticide resistance (see Pest issue 3 – May & June 2009).
Recent research in Sweden initiated by Anticimex, using thetechniques, has revealed rodenticide resistance in four differenttowns in the southern half of Sweden: Kristianstad, Linköping,Uppsala and Växjö. Although Denmark has been tracking thedevelopment of rodenticide resistance since the 1960's, this isthe first resistance study that has taken place in Sweden.
"Unfortunately, this does not come as a surprise for us here atAnticimex. We have long suspected what has now beenconfirmed. We intend to continue these studies in order toevaluate how widespread this problem is, and gain moreinformation to make better decisions," says Håkan Kjellberg, pest control expert at Anticimex Sweden.

Getting into Cotozen Science is Joyce Xiafrom Hunter High School, New York City
Samples have come in from all around the world such as thisone is from a high school in Spain
Research undertaken at one of New York'suniversities has shown that once established, cockroaches like to stay within their owncolonies and in the same geographiclocations.
“Once they move in, they don't leave,”explains Mark Stoeckle, a senior researchassociate at Rockefeller University. Acockroach found in one area of New York isgenetically different from those found inanother district. “On the Upper West Side, about 70% of the American cockroachesbelong to the same gene pool, whilst on
Roosevelt Island, its 80%,” he details.
This research, limited to Americancockroaches (
), is part of the NationalCockroach Project run through CitizenScience – a collaboration of scientists, software developers and educators who arecollectively developing, managing andutilising internet-based citizen scienceprojects to further science itself, and thepublic understanding of both science and ofthe scientific process.
High school students are encouraged tocollect American cockroaches which areposted to the lab at Rockefeller University toundergo DNA sequencing. Not only does itthrow-up some useful scientific information, but it also illustrates to the students howgenetic diversity is a window into evolutionand patterns of migration. Americancockroaches originated in Africa buthave hitch-hiked around the world oncommercial goods.
The project aims to discover if cockroachesdiffer genetically between cities, whether USgenetic types match those in other parts ofthe world and whether there are genetic
types that represent undiscovered look-alikespecies?
To date around 180 specimens from acrossthe USA, but mainly from New York, havebeen analysed, but samples have also beensent in from as far away as Australia. If youwould like to become involved, or submitsamples, please contact Mark Stoeckle [email protected]
