Drug or a lcohol detoxi f icat ion, or ‘detox ‘ , i s the f i rst step taken before

enter ing treatment at THE BALANCE, detox is for c l ients present ing with

drug and a lcohol dependency. Detox is a medical procedure and an

assessment process , which requires an inpat ient admiss ion to a pr ivate

hospi ta l .

The in i t ia l procedure takes p lace to stabi l ize the pat ient , a f ter which they

are then able to move on to comprehensive treatment . Having a detox

prevents some of the most intense and unpleasant symptoms which can

often be a resul t of wi thdrawal . Detoxing and can help you to become

abst inent f rom drugs and a lcohol .

Af ter stabi l izat ion, the focus of detox shi f ts to monitor ing and support ing

var ious processes with in the body; as i t r ids i tse l f of the drug.

I t ’ s important to note that a detox is not considered a whole treatment for

a lcohol or drug addict ion. Detox a lone might help a person to stop abusing

drugs and a lcohol in the short term, but wi thout fo l low-up care , medical

nutr i t ional and therapeut ic work , the r isk of re lapse into problemat ic use

again is h ighly l ike ly .

DETOX PROCEDURES

Pat ients who opt for a medical detox stop tak ing a l l substances and a lcohol .

As they exper ience withdrawal symptoms, a short- term medicat ion plan for

th is detox stage might require them to take certa in medicat ions for a

l imited per iod to ease discomfort .

For example , one common impact f rom drug and a lcohol wi thdrawal is

(Subutex) and naloxone (Suboxone) to stop the more unpleasant wi thdrawal

symptoms. Over t ime, and under medica l superv is ion, the dosage is lowered

unt i l the pat ient is drug- f ree.

Detoxi f icat ion from both drug and a lcohol dependencies are indiv idual and

based on the pat ients present ing heal th condit ion, sever i ty and re lat ive

per iod of dependency. The amount of t ime that a pat ient spends in hospita l

for detox wi l l a lso vary based on a c l ient ’s heal th , age, sex and other

indiv idual var iables . Typica l ly , a detox takes between 2 to 5 days before a

pat ient can be safe ly d ischarged but may take longer in more extreme

cases. The main factor is that i t takes p lace in a hospita l and under the

superv is ion of a medica l team, to ensure your safety and comfort .
