For Protecting Wireless Controls

Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures

Since the early 1960's, Stahlin Non-Metallic En-closures has been manufacturing fiberglass enclo-sure housings to protect electrical connections aswell as sensitive controls, instrumentation andmeasurement systems. Applications of our enclo-sures are useful in a diverse range of industries in-cluding water and wastewater, solar, wind, food,marine, oil and gas, and many more. One of ourprimary applications in many industries is pro-viding the housing for wireless (WiFi) controlsbecause of the advantages our non-metallic en-closures provide over the standard metallic enclo-sures.

Wireless Signals

Wireless transmission is useful in cases where in-terconnecting wires are inconvenient, hazardous,or impossible. Many industries have a need for re-liable enclosures for sensitive controls and moni-toring systems in the field, and effectivetransmission is a must. With wireless data trans-mission, such as radio, the proportion of energyreceived becomes critical if it is too low for thesignal to be distinguished from the backgroundnoise.

Radio receivers receive all signals on the fre-quency at which the receiver is set; in the case ofWiFi: 2.4Ghz. For data transmission to occur, theWiFi signal must be at least 20dbm greater thanthe signal level of the noise or spurious transmis-sions. If a signal is shielded, the signal- to-noiseratio (SNR) diminishes and the signal level dropsbelow the 20dbm threshold. As a result data trans-mission errors then occur. The consequence in thecase of using a laptop is that the computer willbrowse slowly or not at all.

For most applications, the choice of a metallic en-closure for WiFi components has proven to be anineffective one unless there is an external antenna.Metal is the enemy of WiFi radio wave transmis-sion because a metallic enclosure blocks radiowaves and thus reduces the signal quality.

Enclosures Choices

Metallic Enclosures with External Antennas

To overcome the fact that metal enclosures willblock RF signals, users sometimes will install aninternal cable assembly linking the wireless mod-ule to a bulkhead connector. This is intended tobridge the gap allowing an external antenna suchas the Delta 1 series to screw directly onto thebulkhead connector. In practice, a metallic enclo-sure with this configuration of an external antennagenerally performs better than one featuring an in-ternal antenna.

The downside, however, is that the external an-tenna becomes vulnerable to environmental ele-ments (corrosion, ferrous oxide deterioration,natural ambient interference such as that fromlivestock, or consumption of the external an-tenna).

Composite Materials (Fiberglass)

Ultimately, the choice of enclosure material is de-pendent on the concentration of various corrosivespresent in the application environment and otherphysical properties necessary to meet design spec-ifications. Although many non-metallic enclosurematerials offer a degree of corrosion resistance inless harsh environments, one user of non-metallicenclosures, AMCi, has discovered that fiberglassNEMA 4X enclosures are specifically fabricatedand rated for resistance to the harshest corrosiveagents. Additionally, in comparisons of materials,they have determined that metal enclosures andradio frequency signals specific to wireless con-trols were not adequately compatible. Those twofactors resulted in the selection of Stahlin J Seriesand Stahlin Pushbutton fiberglass composite en-closures for use in housing and protecting wire-less controls.

In addition to AMCi, Enviro Tech Instruments andsecurity companies such as Boundless SecuritySystems and RACO Cellularm Systems have dis-covered that non-metallic enclosures are optimalfor their wireless needs. Enviro Tech, for exam-ple, uses Stahlin non-metallic enclosures for pro-tecting wireless monitoring equipment whenmeasuring toxicity in natural water and other liq-uids. Boundless Security uses non-metallic enclo-sures for wireless camera monitoring equipmenton home and office security systems. All of thesecompanies cited wireless compatibility together

with rugged durability and resistant to harsh en-vironments to be key factors in their product spec-ifications.

Results

After reviewing the many available options, an in-creasing number of companies requiring protec-tion for wireless control systems chosenon-metallic enclosures. The reasons why in-clude:

• Metal is not as accommodating as non-metallicmaterials in terms of enabling electronic signalsto transmit as freely as their information systemsrequire.

• Control systems are often placed in extreme andremote environments. Users did not want to riskexposing an antenna as would be necessary with ametallic enclosure. That would have made remotesolutions more vulnerable to failure.

• Non-metallic enclosures ultimately provideproven durability essential for protecting applica-tions.

• Non-metallic enclosures do not present theproblem of rust or corrosion in harsh elements.

• Fiberglass enclosures are suitable for its duallatching/lockable lid to prevent unauthorized ac-cess.

• Fiberglass enclosures are also more resilient toimpact in that they “give” rather than dent. Thenegative consequence to metal enclosures can bethe compromise of the all-important gasketed sealthat prevents moisture, dust and other environ-mental factors from damaging internal controls.

Based on the experience of companies such asAMCi, Enviro Tech Instruments, Boundless Se-curity Systems, RACO Cellularm Systems andothers, hands-on consideration of the detrimentalfactors of choosing metallic enclosures in pro-tecting wireless controls while still ensuring max-imum transmission qualities, has led to thespecification of non-metallic enclosures as themost reliable choice for housing in WiFI-relatedapplications.

through 15 feet of hose.

Powered by a 5 HP 480V or 575V AC motor and a planetary

gear-driven auger that feeds dust at a continuous rate of 90lb/hr into the air stream by a 3300 blower. In contrast to other

dusters, the Worm does not blow air directly into the hopper,

allowing the delivery of dry dust into the air stream, creating

further carry down the entry. Other trickle dusters blow 100%

humidity air into the dust tank, causing the dust to become

wet, and the damp dust will not travel as far in the return en-

tries. Patent Pending.

Boasts a capacity of 700 lb and will auger feed 70lb/min through 2" hose up to 200’. Primarily usedin place of the bantam style dusters but can be oper-ated by one man and refilled less frequently.

The original OEM scoop and coal hauler flinger duster. Dustcapacity based on the size of the bucket. The ejector cylin-der advances dust to the auger allowing you to dust throughtwo flingers. Patent No.: 4872598

A 48" wide dual auger flinger duster with a capacity of

1,520 lb, equipped with a 36-volt motor and on-board bat-

teries, intending to be used along belt lines where width is

a concern. Also available in a single-auger 40" wide ver-sion. Patent Pending.
