Concept and Theme
Concept that first came through my mind was we have got few different religions that
existing in our country, Malaysia. What makes us live in peace way is obviously
understanding each other to avoid conflict. And this is how I choose culture and focus on
religious places to understand the others even more. To dig more, I decided to visit few
different religions (Buddhism, Christian, Hindu and Islam).
I first opted for pattern found in religious places as my theme, and later add on
uniqueness to show that every religion has its own specialty that others do not. This
uniqueness of either building or pattern is mostly passing from the past until now. Pattern
is attractive to me as it shows different styles of architecture and brings out different
characteristics. Every pattern has its own story to show and convey to the viewers. Lastly,
patterns are a part of architecture; it can influence its design and the style to be used.
Research of Places
Guan Di Temple:
A temple for worshipping God of War, Guan Yu, also known as one of the China’s
greatest warrior. It was built in 1888 which makes it one of the oldest temples. At there,
ornaments of fish and dragons on top of roof representing power and wealth. The brick
red wall symbolizes happiness and two stone lions and 2 guardians, Zhou Chang and
Guan Ping scaring the demons away. Spiral incense can be found in that temple to drift
away unpleasant odor. There is a lot of paper offerings were kept in a small room; it is
used to make wishes for wealth and health.
Thean Hou Temple:
This grand temple has elements of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism and is a blend
of contemporary architectural techniques and traditional designs. These can found on
roof, door & window and ceiling. Besides being a place of worship, the temple is a
renowned place for cultural activities. Traditional style can be found on column as how it
was built and supporting. It has dragon as its theme where u can find it anywhere even on
staircase handle.
Sri Mahamariamman:
Gopuram (Main entrance) is decorated with 228 idols of deities symbolizing the
threshold between the spiritual and the material world. A 5-tiered gopuram shaped like a
pyramid. Garbagraham (Sanctum Sanctorum) is located in main prayer hall. Its shrine is a
detached building which has its own roof and walls.
National Mosque:
It has slightly influenced by British when Malaysia was colonized by British. It is also a
combination of cutting edge-modernist design and Islamic symbolism. Design is based
upon the Grand Mosque in Mecca with 48 small domes and the main dome has the
character of a multi fold “semi-opened blue umbrella” that is the roof which symbolize
the 5 pillars of Islam and the 13 states of Malaysia. The 73 meter tall minaret has the
shape of a “closed blue umbrella”.
St. Mary Cathedral:
St. Mart Cathedral is a church for the Anglican Diocese of West Malaysia. From one
small congregation in a simple wooden building 19th century on the present site beside
Dataran Merdeka. Within the church, old British style windows and feature or design can
be found on chairs, altar, lamp and roof.
