The first step in any process improvement endeavor is to determine the baseline state. Knowing where you stand in your process improvement effort is a key factor to your successful program. Possible appraisal methods are: 1. SCAMPI sm Type A Formal Appraisals (Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process Improvement). This CMMI®-based appraisal is a formal method authorized by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). This method may be used early in the process improvement initiative and as a way of monitoring your improvement progress. 2. SCAMPI sm Type B and C Appraisals. These CMMI-based appraisals are a more informal method than the formal type A SCAMPI sm and is also authorized by the SEI. The SCAMPI sm B is less formal than the SCAMPI sm A and the SCAMPI sm C is less formal than the SCAMPI sm B. No maturity ratings are given. 3. Mini-appraisal. This is also a CMMI-based appraisal, but at a more affordable price and has no SEI reporting requirements. This method is mostly used as a first time appraisal to start the process improvement initiative and then when progress is made over a period of time, a formal appraisal (SCAMPI sm A) is used to formally declare a maturity rating. The CMMI® Appraisal Recorder supports both SCAMPI sm and internal appraisal teams in recording their CMMI® (version 1.2) appraisal findings and (configurable) scores for all process areas considered. Results are summarized in tables and radar/bar charts. Download a trial version at www.se-cure.ch/Downloads.html !

CMMI® Appraisal Recorder

Use of capability maturity models has become commonplace among software development

organizations. The first step in any process improvement endeavor is to determine the

baseline state. Knowing where you stand in your process improvement effort is a key factor

to your successful program. Possible appraisal methods are:

1. SCAMPIsm Type A Formal Appraisals (Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process

Improvement). This CMMI®-based appraisal is a formal method authorized by the

Software Engineering Institute (SEI). This method may be used early in the process

improvement initiative and as a way of monitoring your improvement progress.

2. SCAMPIsm Type B and C Appraisals. These CMMI-based appraisals are a more

informal method than the formal type A SCAMPIsm and is also authorized by the SEI.

The SCAMPIsm B is less formal than the SCAMPIsm A and the SCAMPIsm C is less formal

than the SCAMPIsm B. No maturity ratings are given.

3. Mini-appraisal. This is also a CMMI-based appraisal, but at a more affordable price

and has no SEI reporting requirements. This method is mostly used as a first time

appraisal to start the process improvement initiative and then when progress is made

over a period of time, a formal appraisal (SCAMPIsm A) is used to formally declare a

maturity rating.

The CMMI® Appraisal Recorder supports both SCAMPIsm and internal appraisal teams in

recording their CMMI® (version 1.2) appraisal findings and (configurable) scores for all

process areas considered. Results are summarized in tables and radar/bar charts.

Other Products

SE-CURE AG also offers the following products:

- “Project Reporting Cockpit”. This product enables you to define and monitor a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for your software project. Historical, target and actual values are displayed in overviews and charts, from which information can be consumed at a glance.

- “Project Support Toolkit”. This product provides powerful instruments to project managers and measurement specialists to plan, monitor and control their projects, using the same Key Performance Indicators.

- “Business Case Analyser”. This product enables you to specify a business case,

comparing two alternatives. By specifying (primary/secondary) benefits and (direct/indirect) costs over a span of years for both alternatives, four benchmarks (NPV, ROI, Payback Period, IRR) are calculated automatically and graphically displayed. This allows you deciding instantly which alternative is most attractive. Your decisions will become fact-based.
