Arts & Crafts

Support learning by creative thinking! We have been described as the ‘architects of our own brains’. Because we are constantly changing our environment, our brains have to adapt to the changes we have created, making creativity an essential life skill. The Arts & Crafts Club encourages children to work independently and creatively to design, assemble and join, but most of all, to experiment, discover and create.

Bianca Cîrţu

After two successful years as a 3-4 Little London teacher, my Little London journey continues with art projects and art clubs. Throughout time, I have built on my passion for art and design, and understood that I can share it in many ways, including teaching. Changing a simple flat piece of paper into a magical project with complexity, depth and a story behind it activates much deeper layers than simply muscle control, cutting, joining or sticking – namely, creativity, abstract and critical thinking. Creative approaches are ideas that forge a new connection between ideas and tools that are already familiar. This year provides me with the wonderful challenge of coordinating a number of creativity clubs. I believe I am given all the chances I need to prove my theory that: anything has a potential for creativity inasmuch as it becomes the fun hands-on engaging experience the children need.

Ball games

The Ball games club is a Physical Literacy club, a specialized extension of the PE classes. It is based on the movement skills of agility, balance and co-ordination. These skills provide a base for future all-round development in most ball sports, coupled with the introduction of fundamental sport skills such as: hand / eye co-ordination, static & dynamic balance, changing direction, twisting and turning, throwing, catching, running, jumping, striking, ball handling, etc.

Among my many passions related to sports, I can mention: polo, swimming, choreography and modern dance. After graduating the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports, UNEFS Bucharest, and working as a dance teacher and choreographer for Casa de Cultură a M.A.I. and Jissen Do Sports Club, I got a trainer certificate from the Romanian Polo Federation and went on teaching children. Besides my dance lessons with nursery and primary school children, I currently work as a polo teacher at the Sports Club no.1 Pajura, Bucharest, training children for swimming and polo competitions. From my studies, I know that the development of neuro-scientific understanding has added weight to the importance of physical action in relation to the development of the brain. ‘You only need a brain when you are moving. For stationary life forms, a brain is no longer necessary,’ says Professor Susan Greenfield. Far from being separate parts of the human being (or animal), brain and body are entirely dependent on one another.

Ballet

This club aims to initiate children in the art of ballet, helping them further develop, according to their interest and skills. During ballet classes, children get the chance to exercise physically, learn how to move in a given space, how to listen to their bodies and therefore become more disciplined. Moreover, ballet classes create the perfect opportunity to listen to classical music, to find out about famous composers, discriminate between musical instruments and the sounds they make, helping children become a part of the enchanted world of music and delicate movement.

Nicoleta Cocea

I graduated from the Bucharest High School of Choreography in 1992, pursuing a career on the Romanian ballet scene. I became a prima ballerina at the Romanian Opera, taking part in tournaments and performing in a wide array of shows (“Swan Lake”, “Giselle”, “the Nutcracker”, “Bajadera”, “Carmen”, “Don Quijote”, “Hansel and Gretel”, etc). Beyond performing, I pursued my formal education and graduated, in 2002, from the National University for Drama and Film, the Choreography/Pedagogy section. This enabled me to start a teaching career, my first challenge being as a teacher at the Bucharest High School of Choreography, training the future professionals of Romanian ballet. In this capacity, I was able to demonstrate my ability to create my own choreographies and to participate with my students in various shows organized by the high school. During university, I worked for 3 years as a Ballet Teacher at the Lauder-Reut School and Nursery School of Bucharest. Consequently, not only do I have experience at a professional level, but I am also familiar with initiating children in the art of ballet and helping them further develop, according to their interest and skills.

Book Club

Here, at Little London, books are our friends-they tell us stories, they teach us how to be good friends, they provide the basic grounds to start a conversation, and help us find our way around- in school and everywhere we roam. Teachers provide the children with a club theme, a certain book, poem, theatre play, which they read, act, recite, recreate through mark-making. We will put outfits on, take on various roles, make funny/sad faces, use tempo and pitch of voice to build our characters.

My first contact with the 5-6s fascinated me! I was absolutely captivated by their smile, their curiosity and their creativity. I consider the Little London experience to be a great opportunity to experience a professional path to becoming a good teacher. I’m always searching for new ways of developing and improving myself. I’m an enthusiastic, energetic and patient person. An important aspect that someone learns when working with children is to have patience. When working with children, you gain more than experience, you gain love, attention, respect, and these are things I value in children and myself. I am determined to allow children to have the experiences they need so that they can make creative connections, find new ideas, and discover fresh perspectives confidently.

British Traditions

Support learning by valuing British culture and traditions! Britain is full of culture and traditions which have been around for hundreds of years. British customs and traditions are famous all over the world. When people think of Britain, they often think of people drinking tea, eating fish and chips and wearing bowler hats, but there is more to Britain than just those things. There are English and British traditions of sport, music, food, songs, sayings and festivities. About these and much more, come and join British Traditions and enjoy British culture at its finest!

“It is the working man who is the happy man. It is the idle man who is the miserable man.” Benjamin Franklin I'm a very active, hard working man, although retired now. One of my dreams in life was to retire early and take up teaching. I believe that a teacher should not only pass on knowledge, but more importantly encourage children, support them, believe in them and in their dreams. I believe such teachers live forever in the hearts of their pupils. I’m joining the Little London Pipera whole heartedly as this school is a place where I feel at home. I have got three children and although they require lots of time and patience there’s no place I’d rather be than with them. Being surrounded by children as well as working with them and for them will be my dream coming true.

Chess Club (Optional)

Chess is a battle field between two minds with their own strategies and techniques. It is about the art of conquering. The armies are equal, the chances are equal but the winning belongs to the one who is prepared and motivated. A session of chess club at Little London Pipera would involve finding out stories about queens, riddles about ignorant kings and even dances with horses only to translate to nursery school children the rules of the game of chess. Students are guided towards performance through play, learning the rules of the game in an entertaining manner which keeps their interest awake throughout the year.

The School of the Three Horses

My name is Victor Surdu and I am the winner of many diplomas and medals in national and international competitions. I have my own Chess School called ‘The School of the Three Horses’, since April 2008. Each year, under the coordination of the Romanian Chess Federations, I go with the children I teach to national competitions. Among my objectives are the proper conditions of initiating, learning and performing Chess skills. I have the ability to work and teach children about good team skills. I myself work with a professional team of coaches that prepare children for competitions under my supervision. Since May 2009, I won lots of prizes with Little London Chess Team at Tulcea, Bucharest and Eforie Nord. For more than two years, children in Little London Pipera have been playing chess with me and my teachers, winning competitions, prizes and medals.

Cooking Club

Our Cooking Club is a fun way to introduce children to the basics of cooking and teach kids about the importance of healthy eating, but at the same time, it builds confidence and encourages independence. During each session, the children have fun with hands-on gastronomic experiments and recipes and they are encouraged to learn about good food and to explore new flavours in an educational and fun way. We're looking forward to helping all of you have fun in the kitchen. Let's pull out our aprons and get ready to try tasty recipes!

I have been working with children with international background ever since I can remember. I have more than 16 years experience in teaching children from 2 to 6 years old (in a Romanian-Canadian Kindergarten and in a British nursery school). I think my experience speaks for itself when it comes to recommendations. I have been trained for 2 weeks in the U.K. observing the implementation of the new curriculum - EYFS, with visits to British schools. Some of the staff at Little London have been my colleagues and friends for years and I really think we manage to create the dream team we always planned.

Dance around the World

All young children need to explore through touch, movement, sound and vision. In the foundational years, children are laying pathways in the brain that will form the foundation of all future learning. Dance helps children learn how to use their energy, how to display it in a given context, learn to create their own movement patterns and take a lot of pride in gradually becoming experienced dancers. The Dance around the world Club offers children another instrument to make sense of their world through gesture, rhythm and movement. Not only is this a way to make sense of the world, but also to express it and the children’s approach to it with a variety of emotions. It is the unique way in which the children express themselves imaginatively through creative movement while exercising their mind (listening skills, multicultural concepts, etc) and body at the same time. When movement is consciously structured and is performed with awareness for its own sake, it becomes dance. It is a natural method for learning and a basic form of cultural expression.

Working with children is not only a job for me, but a calling. I have been working in this field for 21 years, but I believe that every single day gives us the chance to learn something new, to experiment, to give back. Each day is a new chance to enter a pure universe: a children’s world.

Working with children has taught me that every single child is unique, that they have to be treated each with their particularities: a shy child must be encouraged; an active child must be given the proper instruments to use his/her energy in a constructive way.

My greatest hobby is reading, but since I also have some inclination towards music and drama, I also enjoy a good theatre play.

Fun aerobic

This club is designed to build a lifetime of fitness skills. Children will improve their aerobic endurance, upper body strength, abdominal strength, flexibility and coordination. Children who benefit from sustained aerobic exercise experience increased self-esteem. Additionally, improvements in academic learning and creative thinking can be associated with aerobic exercises. Participation in the aerobic exercises in our Club’s program will positively affect your children’s bodies, reduce the risk of diseases, improve tolerance for stress and promote well-being. Moreover, children who become physically fit are more likely to develop stronger immune systems and exert greater control over health risks. Our teacher can play an active role in the development of lifelong fitness for children by encouraging, supporting, developing, and implementing creative aerobic programs.

Fun Phonics

This club is a great chance to put children’s knowledge of phonics into practice. It is building on the pre-existent information of sounds, phonics and literacy skills of reception children, helping them delve into the treasures of English language in an informal, entertaining context, while playing with sounds and letters. Its scheme is relying on an extra-curricular planning of activities aiming to ensure the proper acquisition of the phonics programme. Fun Phonics is a child centered approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics. With actions for each of the 42 letter sounds, the multi-sensory method is very motivating for children and teachers, who can see their students achieve. The letter sounds are split into seven groups. The sounds are taught in a specific order (not alphabetically). This enables children to begin building words (and confidence!) as early as possible.

Hats in a Hurry

A hat is a head covering. It may be worn for protection against the elements, for ceremonial or religious reasons, for safety, or as a fashion accessory. In the past, hats were an indicator of social status. They can also indicate nationality. One way or the other, hats inform one about identity. This club underlines the benefits of diversity, creativity and meaning-assignation at this stage. Children's attitudes toward their race and ethnic group and other cultural groups begin to form early in the preschool years. Infants can recognize differences in those around them, and young children can easily absorb various stereotypes. Young children can develop stereotypic viewpoints of cultures different from their own when similarities and differences among all individuals are not emphasized. Teachers can help eliminate stereotypes by presenting materials and activities that enable children to draw their attention to the similarities and dissimilarities of all individuals.

Therefore, teachers encourage children to express themselves freely, without boundaries in order to enable them to discover themselves and what they can do. At our artistic clubs, we use a variety of resources and techniques that can help children bring to life their understanding of the world (real or imaginary) that they perceive as their universe. With the smaller children, this is even more so, since creativity is one of the means of communication preferred by the children this age, through which they activate language and make sense of the their world. Just imagine! is one creativity club that encourages children to make sense of their world through art.

This year provides me with the wonderful challenge of coordinating a number of creativity clubs. I believe I am given all the chances I need to prove my theory that: anything has a potential for creativity inasmuch as it becomes the fun hands-on engaging experience the children need.

Mark-making

Within the context of an active play-based learning environment, children will have many different ways of

representing their thoughts and feelings in the early years. Some will choose music, dance or song, others will prefer to tell stories through role-play, drama or using small world resources, but most will at some point be naturally drawn

to represent their ideas graphically. When children realise that marks can be used symbolically to carry meaning, in much the same way as the spoken word, they begin to use marks as tools to make their thinking visible. These marks will support the developing concepts of mathematics and language in relation to their play. A sensitive practitioner

will recognise that children make marks for many different reasons and that development along this journey is complex, depending as much on confidence, motivation and dispositions as on their physical skills or ability.

Martial Arts The Martial Arts class focuses on both physical and mental training. The aim of martial arts classes is form good athletes, both as performers and as people. The club program combines all of the benefits of the traditional martial arts (discipline, courtesy, self-control, confidence, character, concentration, teamwork and focus) with all of the benefits of an effective self-defense program (increased awareness, safety, and practical self-defense). Functional relationships with children are based on respect. Martial arts classes guide children through achieving self-discipline, respect for self and others, and motivate them to strive in order to become better.

Karate is my passion and my profession. My name is Nicu Stoian and I was the National and European champion in Kyokushin Martial Arts for years in a row. I train children and adults for the Kyokushin style, Judo and Wrestling, Black Belt 2nd Dan. My professional background extends to teaching at “Lauder-Reut School & Kindergarden”, “American International School of Bucharest”, “Atlantis Fitness & Lifestyle” and coordinating self-defense training for security personnel of the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest. I began to practice Martial Arts in 1993, at 15 years old, and my mentor is Sosai Mas Oyama, founder of Kyokushin Martial Arts. He was a man who preferred this style format and who was able to motivate 20 million people to practice it. I hope that I might be an example for children. In my classes, I try to be a good fighter that inspires and motivates them. This is what I consider it the most important thing in sports - discipline and character!

Mask-making

Mask-making crafts for children is a fun format enabling children to combine means of expression and creativity. Thus drama and role-playing become a more complex activity that entails designing your own costume, your own mask having in mind the role one would like to assume. From animal to social roles, mask-making requires imagination, design and project management skills.

Now & Then

Ever since the cave men, people wanted to evolve. Then, to make a fire they needed two sticks. Now, all it takes is a lighter. In 1817, the first form of bicycle, the German draisine, was recorded. Nowadays, we have mountain bikes. In 1886, the first patented car belonged to Benz. Today, we have hybrid cars and F1 racing. In 1892, Alexander Graham Bell makes the first telephone call from New York to Chicago. Today, we have iPhones and smartphones. And the list goes on and on and on! Children are invited to learn about history, to turn back in time and learn about the origins of things they use today so they can better understand and appreciate the present with the modern technology they benefit from.

One of the reasons why I wanted to become a teacher is that I like communicating with people. My teaching background is not limited to Romania: I have travelled and worked as a teacher in Baku, Azerbaijan (for a year) and in London. Curiosity and desire to understand other civilizations took me to different places, where I spent short periods of time, but from where I returned a bit wiser and more aware of my responsibilities in my personal and my professional life. When I came to Little London Pipera, I got a new perspective about working with children, I learned about new teaching programs and experienced different teaching and planning techniques.

Creativity is fundamental to successful learning. It is one’s unique approach to things and the context around us, sometimes a tool to making sense of the world around us, estimating, problem-solving and predicting. It is the individual saying: "I can be; I can do." Isn't this what we want for our children? Every child is born with creative potential, but this potential may be stifled if care is not taken to nurture and stimulate it. Creative experiences are the ideal medium for developing curiosity, innovation and imagination, crucial skills for young children who are growing and developing in a rapidly changing world. A learning environment rich in creative experiences and resources provides opportunities for: exploring, discovery, experimentation, and sensory development.

My name is Oana Solomon and starting with September 2010, I became an Art teacher at Little London Pipera Nursery School. Let me tell you a few things about myself. My first encounter with art was at an early age (10 years old), when I was accepted at “Nicolae Tonitza” Art School in Bucharest. There, I studied for 8 years, until I graduated and joined the classes of Bucharest Art Academy, which I attended for 6 years. These 14 years built a strong education founded on passion for beauty and art. Upon my graduation in 1993, I was offered a position with the National Museum of Art in Bucharest, where I currently run The Restoration Department (metal-ceramics). Joining Little London Pipera seemed like a natural milestone in my career. Here, I got the chance to teach children, something that I have done before and found a lot of satisfaction in. Also, I found here educational professionals that I could observe, learn from and share my knowledge with.

Piano

When learning a song or a dance step, when playing a musical instrument, children experience the unique integration of body and mind that music provides. Sensory integration is a crucial factor in a child's learning readiness for school subjects such as reading, writing, and math. Music improves spatial-temporal reasoning, a neurological process needed to understand mathematics. While not every child will develop into a musical master, every child does have the potential to benefit from music – especially when music-teaching takes a broad sensory approach. The Piano lessons provide an extremely important foundation for every child's musical education. Just as the basis for verbal language is formed very early in life, the listening vocabulary of music should be encouraged by various musical activities in the preschool years.

I have a background of 12 years of experience in working with children, and an extensive array of performances and concerts. Music is my passion, my career, my life. I have studied the piano at the National University of Music in Bucharest and perfected my technique with the pianist Christian Beldi in Hamburg in 2005. I am also a member of the Devotio Moderna contemporary music band and the pianist for Sonomania Choir. I believe that discovering music has long-term benefits in a child’s life: the growing taste for beauty and the education of the musical taste and why not an increasing awareness of listening skills, even for foreign languages.

Science & Discovery

We encourage children to be observant, to predict, to explore (using 'what if' scenarios), to notice patterns in everyday situations, to make and invent things, because children learn mostly by experimenting! Children are enjoying playing and taking part in science activities including ingredients such as sand, water, oil and dough. Our Science and Discovery club encourages children to perform first-hand investigations, record and recall their favourite parts of a club session, sharing them with their friends. We shall learn the rules of safety when performing scientific experiments and grow into great scientists!

Spanish (Optional)

For years it has been thought that teaching a foreign language to preschool-age children would be futile. However, recent studies indicate that the best time for a child to learn another language is in the first three to four years of life. Since 50 percent of the ability to learn is developed in the first years of life and another 30 percent by age eight, early childhood development programs have the opportunity to encourage early learning and development. This does not mean, however, that 50 to 80 percent of one's intelligence, wisdom, or knowledge is formed during early childhood. It simply means that during the first few years of life, children form their main learning pathways in the brain (Bloom, 1964).

Cervantes Institute

The Cervantes Institute is one of the most prestigious world-renowned linguistic institutes teaching the Spanish language. In 2005, it received the prize Príncipe de Asturias for Communication and Human Sciences. Our partnership with Cervantes Institute enables us to offer the best possible standard of Spanish teaching with native speakers. "During this period and especially the first three years of life, the foundations for thinking, language, vision, attitudes, aptitudes, and other characteristics are laid down," says Ronald Kotulak, author of Inside the Brain. Consequently, it would be a waste not to use a child's natural ability to learn during his or her most vital years, when learning a second language is as easy as learning the first.

Stretch and Bend

When most adults think about exercise, they imagine working out in the gym lifting weights. But for children, exercise means playing and being physically active. They exercise when they have gym class at school, soccer practice, or dance class. They're also exercising when they're riding bikes or playing tag. Everyone can benefit from regular exercise. Kids who are active will:

have stronger muscles and bones

have a leaner body because exercise helps control body fat

be less likely to become overweight

decrease the risk of developing illness

have a better outlook on life Besides enjoying the health benefits of regular exercise, kids who are physically fit sleep better and are better able to handle physical and emotional challenges. The Stretch and Bend Club practices lots of fitness elements without even knowing – endurance, strength and flexibility.

Travel around the World

Support learning by appreciating the value of internationalism! Little London Pipera puts a lot of emphasis on the multicultural development of children. The goal of multicultural education is not only to teach children about other groups or countries. It is also to help children become accustomed to the idea that there are many lifestyles, languages, cultures, and points of view. The purpose of multicultural curriculum is to attach positive feelings to multicultural experiences so that each child will feel included and valued, and will feel friendly and respectful toward people from other ethnic and cultural groups (Dimidjian, 1989). One key to helping young children develop a sense of being citizens of the world lies with the early childhood teacher. The disposition exhibited by this individual in promoting everyone's culture will be the successful factor in the child's development of a multicultural perspective.
