We will donate funds, and have offered resources for transport. We still need to set up a formal list of our members that wish to help out with the rescue effort. July 2012

The first six months of 2012 have flown by, and it has been a very, very good year for WPC. So far we have held a fun day and our spring specialty in Charlottesville Va, with at total entry of 41. Reports of both these events appear elsewhere in this newsletter. However, I want to make a special mention of all our new members of which there are many. Welcome to 2012 new members Pat Hudson, Barry Penrose, Dot Romano, Moncia Postma and Dot and Zemira Jones. In addition we had requests for another 7 applications at our June meeting. We are especially grateful to Paul Murphy for taking on the task of Web Master. He has completely reworked the website, and if you have not visited it recently please do so. Paul has done an impressive job. The url is www.wildernesspointerclub.com There is a wealth of information there, and if there is anything our membership would like to see there, please submit it to Paul, who will submit it to the board for approval. The WPC has been very busy working for the club, the members and the breed in a variety of ways.

On May 19, we hosted our second Fun Day. The response was overwhelming. A very special thanks to Marianne Goodwin for coming all the way from Ohio to help out with this event. Marianne and I ran the field seminar, with Pat Hudson doing the best job of bird planting that I have seen in a very long time. Thanks to new member Dot Romano for bringing a truck load of agility equipment, setting it up and then spending hours helping people and their dogs become agile. Thanks also to Barry Penrose for working long and hard hours with us to find birds and be on stand by to pick them up. Thanks , as al-ways, to Chris and Allen Armistead. To Allen for picking up the birds and to Chris for donating boxes of trophies for the Fun Match. We are grateful for their endless support of the club and all events the club puts on. A full report appears elsewhere in this newsletter.

WPC donated $300 to the fire victims in Kansas. They have lost everything including 4 dogs. They were APC members, and our club has made a precedent, a very good one in my opinion, to try and help out any and all Pointer fanciers, whether they were WPC members or not, that have suffered catastrophic losses. If anyone wishes to help these people out, please contact me or Kim, for more information.

The WPC is also in the process of working with PRO to organize a formal alliance. We will donate funds, and have offered resources for transport. We still need to set up a formal list of our members that wish to help out with the rescue effort. This can be anything from helping the transportation effort , to checking out local shelters, to fostering Pointers in need. Anyone that wishes to help out, please contact Kim or me.

As many of you know, we had intended to hold our second annual specialty with the Middleburg KC, in Leesburg Va, at the end of October. We ran into some problems and had to cancel that specialty. To quell the negative rumor(s) as to the reason to this decision, I would very briefly like to explain the Board’s decision. We were under the impression (via emails on file from Middleburg KC) that we would have a choice/say in the selection of the judge. In fact you, as members of the WPC know this as you had the opportunity to submit names. I learned, on May 2, 2012 that the All Breed Club had the judge for our

President’s Message

Specialty under contract in Nov 2010. The judge was to be David Flanagan. It has been mentioned that the Board cancelled the specialty because they did not like the judge. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Board considered the fact that Mr. Flanagan had judged our 2011 specialty and this would put him in the position of judging our specialty two years in a row. We felt the membership was best served by not using the same person two years in a row. On a personal note, David Flanagan has been a personal friend of mine for more than 20 years, and we would be very sad to think that anyone would believe this action was due to not liking the judge.

WPC is working hard, under great time constraints , to hold our Fall 2012 specialty with the Catonsville KC, in West Friendship MD on October 13, 2012 with a supported entry the day before on the same grounds. The specialty judge is to be Carol Brown, with Geaorjean McDermott doing Sweeps, and Henri Tuthill judging the supported entry. The show chair is Pat Hudson. (Please be clear, this specialty is pending AKC approval until further notice) As of this writing , it is unclear if we will be able to hold this specialty. As mentioned, time constraints may be a problem. The AKC has already advised us that we are good to go as long as we submit the parent club approval in a timely manner. So, stay tuned, we will let you know as soon as possible to try and make this specialty happen.

As always, we welcome any and all suggestions and requests from the membership regarding possible events and projects that your club might undertake. This is a year of rebuilding and restructuring our club. The work and results so far are beyond gratifying.. We have welcomed six new members, all of which have attended at least one of our events , and have worked on at least one of these events. WPC has put on another very successful specialty, bringing in entries from all over the east coast, as well as Canada. The WPC Run Day offered a venue for members and friends to try out fun things to do with their dogs. It was great to see dogs and their people that had never met a quail, get their introduction to the wonderful world of field work. To see the light bulb go off for dogs from 3 months to 11 years was beyond gratifying.. We saw dogs that thought they were out for a stroll with their person, all of a sud-den experience their instinct kick in. Later, those same dogs had the chance to try out the agility equipment. The results were great. One of my favorite sights was a person going though the tunnel while their dog patiently sat and watched.

And finally, on behalf of the WPC, we are grateful to our friend, the WPC’s “official” photographer Laurie Shuren. Many/most of the great pictures that you see here and on our website, were taken by Laurie. We are lucky indeed to know her.

A highlight of the week was a wonderful wine and cheese party featuring some of the wonderful wines that Califor-nia has to offer.

The Breed judge was Pointer breeder Mrs. Denys Janssen from Bogata, Colombia.

WPC Fun Day WPC held their annual Fun Day on May 19, 2012 in Columbia, Va. The weather was perfect as was the turnout.

The day started with a quick, and very productive WPC Board Meeting, with all Board members present. Min-utes will be distributed to the membership via this newsletter.

The response on all levels was overwhelming and the success was evident on many levels. Before I go any fur-ther, let me thank Marianne Goodwin, who drove all the way from Ohio to help, and she did, from setting up the ring and tent to spending all of Saturday morning doing field training. ( and NO it is NOT easy to set up an “Easy Pop Up Tent”!!)

We had 14 dogs signed up for the field seminar, which was our limit. It was gratifying to see the lightbulb go on for so many dogs, from 3 months to 11 years old. It was equally as exciting to see the look on the owners’ faces when their dogs put it all together for the first time. A special thanks to Pat Hudson for doing a great job bird planting , and to Allen Armistead for making the trek to pick up the birds for us.

New member Dot Romano was kind enough to bring agility equipment and once set up, worked with many dogs , giving them their first taste of the fun, agility fans have been enjoying for years.

Then everyone took a much needed, well earned, lunch break. Thanks to head chef, John Bandes, for all the great grilled food. Special thanks to Kim Yocklin’s husband Tom, for what is reported to be the best pulled pork in Va and Md. As always, thanks to Chris Armistead for her wonderful baked goods.

Once everyone was well fed and rested, we started the fun match, which incidentally WAS a lot of fun, at least for those watching:-)) Thanks to our judge Lynn Worth Smith, who was kind and supportive to all, and did a great job sorting through her quite large entry.

There were 20 entries, and the winners are:

Best Junior Handler: Maddie Youklin with Joey

Best Adult in Match: Jane with Paul Murphy

Best Puppy in Match: Summer with Monica Postma

Best Field Dog: Kenya with Marianne Goodwin

Best Veteran in Match: Chico with Dorothy Jones

Best Opp Sex Veteran in Match: Ria with John Bandes

Best in Match: Summer with Monica

Special thanks must also go to Chris, Marianne, and Monica for donating all the great trophies !

December Hunt Test: Chris Armistead reported that we are looking for a club to partner

with for the hunt test. There was some discussion on possibly changing the date to in

possible the same date as last year, and stick with it in an effort to increase

participation. Members discussed the need for judges and it was agreed that if needed

we would use the same judges as last year.

Website: Allen Armistead is still working on the .org website address for the club. Paul

Murphy has updated the .com website and the changes look great!

Specialties: There will be no October specialty and we are looking for a show to partner
