What is CLT?

Cross-laminated timber

• Wall and floor elements made by cross laminating layers of stress graded timber

• Cross laminating guarantees the strength and stability of CLT

• The first CLT boards were made in Austria in early -90’s and first CLT factory started in 1994. CLT has been in the heart of environmentally conscious building in the central Europe for the last decade.

Production process

Preparation of layers > gluing > pressing > processing

• Regularized timber is laid out in layers, the size of the board in production.

• Each layer is then glued before the next layer is set on top.

• After gluing the set of layers is pressed in one press to make the CLT-board.

• The pressed CLT-board is then processed with a CNC machine to the size and shape of specified wall element.

Speed and quality to multi-storey building

CLT is a material that makes it possible to construct multi storey buildings in wood and increase the speed on site dramatically. Time saving can be from 20 to 70%. The strength by weight factor is probably the best compared to common building materials like steel and concrete. Lightness brings on one of the fastest methods in multi storey building, modular building. Modules can be prefabricated in factory

conditions to a ready to move in state, bringing quality and speed to finishing. Ideally small flats can be finished so that all fitted furniture and bathrooms are already in the flat. The strength and rigidity of CLT makes handling of those modules possible. They are light enough and strong enough. Connections for electricity, water and air-conditioning can be made outside the flats.

• CLT can be, if surface material is correctly chosen, left also visible. That can be a considerable saving in costs. Visible wood can give the spaces warmth and pleasant image that has many proven psychological effects.

• Wood in visible surfaces reduces stress levels, improves ability to concentrate and also improves recovery times from illnesses. These effects have been used to good effect in small dwellings as well as high rise.

Treatments

The natural beauty of wood can be left visible

• Typically in Scandinavia there is a wish to have wood also visible inside the house. It does not have to be natural colour of wood. CLT, like any wood product is easy to treat with stains or paint. The surface can be planed or sanded, special effect like grooves and other shapes can be added to the surface as was done with the new school in Pudasjärvi
