SARANAC — Saranac Elementary Schoolhas a fourth-grade teacher that’s been touch-ing lives for more than 20 years. And, now, she’s receiving special recognition for her ef-forts.

The New York State Education Depart-ment has named Lisa Napper the recipient ofthe 2009 New York State Better BeginningsAward. The award is given annually to onlyone teacher in the state who exemplifiesteaching excellence.

Upon learning she will receive the award,Napper — who has been with the school dis-trict since 1988 — said she was both “sur-prised” and “honored.”

“I feel very honored accepting this as anindividual, but I’d feel more comfortable ac-cepting it if it were an award for the SaranacCentral School District,” said Napper. “Thisdistrict is completely team-oriented. So, itwould be very easy for any one of my col-leagues to be able to accept this award aswell.”

However, school principal Marguerite M.Tamer said the number of nominationswhich poured in for Napper was over-whelming.

“When we heard about the award and thetype of person they were looking for, she im-mediately came to everybody’s mind,” saidTamer, who noted nominations came fromcolleagues, parents, former students andmembers of the community.

“Her integrity, honesty and strong moralsare beyond reproach,” a nomination fromone administrator read. “Additionally, herempathy for her students is extraordinary.Mrs. Napper consistently extends her workday in an attempt to meet her students’needs.”

Another nomination also had glowing re-marks for her, from the perspective of both

a student and fellow educator. The nomina-tor recalled losing a brother to cancer, atwhich time Napper took her “under herwing,” helping her continue her relation-ships with friends, teachers, counselors andfamily during the difficult time.

“Mrs. Napper has a way of making herstudents feel important and special,” the let-ter read. “She does a great job at recognizingindividual needs and does what is appro-priate to help each and every student ... Lisahelped shape who I was as a developmenteducator.”

One community member credited Napperfor her efforts as president of the SaranacTeachers Association, particularly in refer-ence to the July 2006 closing of Cadyville El-ementary School. When the closure was pro-posed by the school district, the communityand those involved with the school were “inan uproar,” the nominator wrote.

“Immediately, the teachers at Cadyvilleturned to Lisa Napper, as association presi-dent, for assistance,” the letter stated.“Lisa’s response was well thought out, effi-cient and executed with respect for all in-volved. Lisa listened to the complaints of theteachers and encouraged those teachers towork together with her to make a list of con-cerns.”

Napper then took the concerns to schooldistrict administrators and “spent countlesshours as a mediator between the parties try-ing to ascertain what options were availableand if the options satisfied the needs of theteachers.”

Though the school closed, the teachers re-ceived assistance to accommodate the tran-sition and many of the worries of communi-ty members were put to rest.

“In a circumstance that could have beenextremely hostile,” the letter continued,“Lisa’s quiet presence prevails, in the bestinterest of the students in the Saranac dis-trict.”

The nominations, said Tamer, validatedwhat she already knew.

“I know how wonderful she is, but read-ing them was very heart-warming,” saidTamer. “And, I know why they selected her.”

Napper said the support she has receivedboth at school and from home, has meant allthe difference in making her a successfulteacher.

“I’ve been fortunate to have that supportfrom both my home family and my school

family,” she said. “And, Saranac is the finestschool in the North Country. We are very for-tunate to have phenomenal colleagues, phe-nomenal administration and phenomenalparents by our side.”

Napper will be presented with her awardduring a regular board of education meetingat the district office in Dannemora Monday,Nov. 2. The award will be conferred at 6:30p.m. A reception is scheduled prior to themeeting at 6 p.m.

The Clinton County Office for the Aging has just fin-ished up this years round of public hearings. Wehold these hearings annually at nutrition sites

around the county in order to educate and inform the pub-lic about Office for the Aging’s programs and services.

More importantly, we want to hear from seniors who useour programs about what works, what doesn’t, and whatchanges they would like to see. We use this information tomold our current programming, and to introduce new pro-grams.

Some of the topics of interest to seniors this year wereHome Energy Assistance Program eligibility guidelines, andwhat kind of benefit they could expect this year; what kindof assistance is available for home weatherization; HealthInsurance Counseling, and how to pick a Medicare part DPlan, employment for seniors, and transportation, to namea few.

Transportation is a hot topic, with high fuel prices, a largecounty, and people having a variety of transportation needs.Clinton County Public Transit does a great job with regularcity and rural routes, and also the Paratransit bus for peoplewho cannot access the regular routes, but they are unable toserve everyone. The Office for the Aging helps fund two bus-

es which currently do bothcity and rural routes with asuggested contribution of $1city and $2 rural for people60 years of age and older. Weare currently working withCCPT to improve on theseservices and make themmore user friendly to seniors.

Overall, we had very posi-tive responses to the publichearings. Most seniors ap-preciate the programs andservices we offer. We wel-come their input and invitethem to call the Clinton County Office for the Aging at 565-4620 with any questions or concerns.

The Senior Connection is a column provided by the ClintonCounty Office for the Aging. For more information about servic-es for senior citizens, contact their office at 135 Margaret St.,Suite 105, Plattsburgh or call them at 565-4620.

Researching Windows 7 will uncover the notionWindows 7 is the second release of Windows Vista. Is that true? Mostly it is. Is that bad? No, I don’t

think so.Microsoft NT operating systems, which kept the same ma-

jor design through Windows 2000/XP, operated in twomodes called Kernel Mode and User Mode. Kernel Mode op-erates with the highest privilege levels and consists of theHardware Abstraction Layer, called HAL, and Executive Ser-vices. User mode has lower privileges and consists of sub-systems that include Win32, Win32 Security and others. Takean everyday application like Internet Explorer and examinehow it operates.

Opening the program causes it to interact with the Win32Subsystem which communicates needs to Executive Serviceswhich then interacts with HAL to control hardware. Becausethe program never directly interacts with hardware, every-thing stays under control. The analogy of a restaurant workswell. Diners are applications, waiters are Executive Servicesand the chef is HAL. Keeping diners away from the chef andmaking them interact with the waiters is good practice andgenerally makes things run smoother.

The problem with the design is device drivers interactedwith Kernel Mode and could cause system instability. InVista, Microsoft changed the driver architecture by moving

root functionality away fromKernel Mode and placing itinto the lower privilegedUser Mode making systemsmore stable.

But the technology wasnew, manufacturers had is-sues to overcome with thechange and the end resultwas very poor Vista perform-ance. Fast forward to thepresent time and the technol-ogy is considered “mature.”Manufacturers know the newarchitecture very well andMicrosoft has worked hard to eliminate bugs and bring forthenhancements and better performance.

I personally have no problem with Vista rehashed. Pleasetell the chef I’ll have an order of Windows 7.

How Windows 7 relates to Windows Vista

I’m sure everyone has seen a sale like this. The grocerystore will offer a great bargain price on an item, the kindof item you might like to buy quite a few of at a time.

But then, the store’s advertisement says, in small print, “Lim-it 4.”

If you’ve been reading this column for a while and savingall of your weekly coupon inserts, it’s likelythat you have accumulated multiple couponsfor the same item. For this example, assumeyou’ve been watching your store’s sale fliersand waiting for yogurt cups to go on sale. Fi-nally, there they are, four for $1, a great price! But then, of course, you’re disappointed tonote you can only buy four cups of yogurt.Time for the fourth, best-kept couponing “se-cret.”

How to ‘unlimit’ purchase limitsAt most stores, when a sale item is adver-

tised “limit 4,” it does not refer to the numberof total items of that type but, rather, the va-riety of each item. With the yogurt example, above, you would not be limited to four cups of yogurt. You’dbe limited to four vanilla, four peach, four blueberry, four ba-nana and so on.

How does this work? When purchase limits are put intoplace for a sale, most stores set the register to limit four scansat the sale price on the bar code of that product. But each va-riety of a product has its own unique bar code. So, while theadvertisement may lead us to believe that we can buy just fouryogurt cups, we can actually buy four of each flavor. If 12-packs of soda are on sale “limit 5,” we can buy five 12-packsof each variety of soda.

As long as you don’t exceed the purchase limit on each fla-vor, type, or variety of an item you can essentially take homeas many of that item as you want or need that day — and inturn, buy as many as you have coupons for. It’s a great way

to beat the pricing game, too, because sales with purchase lim-its typically offer an item at a low price in the store’s pricingcycle, too. When the price hits that low, it’s the right time tobuy as many as you will need or use until the price dropsagain.

So, let’s see how this sale could work in my favor. BecauseI’ve saved my coupon inserts, I have sixcoupons for 50 cents off four cups of yogurt.I’m not limited to just buying four cups; I’llbuy 24 today! 24 yogurt cups may seem like alot to buy at one time, but in comparing the ex-piration dates with the amount of yogurt ourhousehold will likely consume over the nextmonth, I know that our family of five will eatit long before it expires. I buy four cups of eachflavor that I want, never exceeding the pur-chase limit of four for any of the flavors. Andwait until you see what I pay.

With a 50-cent coupon for each four I buy,my yogurt now costs me just $3 for 24 cups, orjust 12.5 cents each! That’s a fantastic price foryogurt cups. By waiting to use my yogurt

coupons until yogurt was deeply discounted, I saved evenmore.

I’ve mentioned this before, but the grocery stores in myneighborhood do not double coupons. But around the coun-try, many stores do. Imagine if I were shopping in a store thatdoubled coupons! each 50-cent coupon would double to $1 invalue and all the yogurt would be free. Now that’s super-couponing!

We have been having a lot of late blight questions thisyear. One important question many people are ask-ing is “Is it safe to eat a tomato infected with late

blight?” Here is a very informative and important answer to thequestion:

Yes, the unaffected parts probably are safe to eat. The con-clusion unaffected tissue is safe to consume if diseased sectionsare adequately removed is based on several points. Thispathogen does not produce a toxin that can make people sick,as a few plant pathogens can do. Plant pathogens cannot infectpeople. No food safety issues have been found with other dis-eases that affect tomato fruit or potato tubers.

Late blight appears to be like other more common diseases,in that these do not appear to affect plant tissue beyond the areaof infection. Many home gardeners often cut off diseased tissuerather than throw out the entire fruit or tuber having found thehealthy appearing part of these to taste fine. To date, this prac-tice has not been associated with any human health issues.

Diseases like late blight are not considered a health concernfor commercial tomato processing. Fruits are sorted to removeaffected ones, but this is because of the impact on fruit quality. For home canning, only disease-free, preferably vine-ripened,firm tomatoes are recommended in the USDA Complete Guide

to Home Canning because fun-gal pathogens may raise tissuepH (which has been supportedby recent studies) and therebyallow growth of potentiallyharmful microorganisms, suchas Salmonella. Deteriorationcan occur quickly after infec-tion; therefore, affected toma-toes and potatoes should besalvaged and consumed rightaway.

This was taken from Cornell University’s Department of Hor-ticulture Web site, www.hort.cornell.edu. The most importantmessage about consuming late blight is in bold. We are tryingto get the word out that home gardeners should not can toma-toes infected with late blight.

Public or private?Local schools admit non-resident

students to their schools and chargetuition. Some school districts havediscussed how much should becharged. The answer is simple.

Public schools should not acceptstudents from other districts. Theirmission is to educate the studentsof their own district, not studentsfrom elsewhere. Public schoolsserve their own demographic, notthe demographic of other districts.

If public schools focused on their public, then tuition wouldbe a moot point.

If a school district begins to reap benefits from paying stu-dents from other districts, would that income begin to affect de-cisions being made for students of their own public?

Even if public schools charge tuition, do we not end up witha public school funding private education?

If public school accept students from other districts, does thatnot set up the potential for competition among public schooldistricts, a type of competition that school districts have foughtagainst?

Should a public school board of education be discussing howto lower tuition to make the school more attractive to others orhow to fill those empty seats? Isn’t the filling of seats in a pub-lic school a matter of the birth rate rather than the marketingof the school? Likewise, if a public school accepts students fromanother public school, is that not robbing students and creat-ing empty seats in another school district?

Public schools need to be concerned about their own publicnot about the students from elsewhere. If public schools wantto participate in the recruiting game to attract students fromelsewhere, then let them become private. The educationalvoucher solution for funding would be a perfect alternative. Dopublic schools really want the competition?

The need for the services that Unit-ed Way of Clinton and Essex CountiesInc. helps supports has never beengreater. Employment, constructionand tourism are down, yet gas, foodand utility costs are rising. Demandson public agencies, food pantries, util-ity funds, and free clinics are muchhigher than last year and from people

who have never requested assistance before. State funding topublic and private agencies has been slashed, at the same timerequests for assistance are increasing. United Way of Clintonand Essex Counties, Inc helps fill that gap.

The United Way of Clinton and Essex Counties Inc has beena part of this community for 60 years. Our main role is provid-ing financial support to local health and human service pro-grams to 33 partner agencies. They do not just provide a blankcheck to these agencies; they fund specific programs with meas-urable outcome objectives ensuring the funds invested on yourbehalf are making the greatest impact on community needs. Irealize that many are facing financial pressures in their ownfamilies. But, I hope people would give as generously as theycan. I’m sure they know someone who has been helped by oneof the United Way partner agencies, a neighbor, co-worker, stu-dent, and quite likely their own family.

out hesitation, Whittington began lookinginto getting hair extensions for Breanna.

“I didn’t see [Breanna] at first because Ididn’t have Wanda bring her in, but she hadvery little hair, just a little bit at the top,”Whittington. “So, I had to do some researchto see how I could attach it to the scalp.”

The process required a special product, which Whittington immediately orderedand made affordable for McIntyre, who ad-mitted doesn’t “have a lot of money.”

“Through trial and error, we got herwhere she is,” he said with a laugh.

Since Breanna first started going to Tan-gles, her new head of hair has continued toevolve and is now virtually impossible totell apart from a regular head of hair, saidWhittington.

“When she first came in, she was verydowntrodden,” he said. “Once she got herhair, she began to open up. When I saw hersmile and she hugged me for the first time,it was great.”

“She’s always had a good personality butyou can tell the difference,” said McIntyre.“She feels better about herself; she’s gotmore confidence.”

Even Breanna herself said her new lookhas helped a lot with people who have ei-ther teased her about her appearance in thepast or who simply didn’t understand whatectodermal dysplasia is, she said.

“I’ve gotten picked on a lot,” said Brean-na. “I looked different before I got my ex-

tensions because I didn’t have a lot of hair.A lot of people have asked me questionsabout it because they’re curious. A lot ofpeople assume I have cancer.”

Now, that’s not the case.“It makes me look a little bit more nor-

mal,” Breanna said of her extensions, whichare made from authentic human hair. “A lotof people don’t even know I have them. They think it’s my real hair.”

Breanna’s personal story is one exampleof how Whittington and Gerry help peopleon an everyday basis, said McIntyre.

“I thought what better people to nomi-nate than them,” she said.

And, though they didn’t win, Tangles didplace within the top 150 nominations in thecountry and was the only business nomi-nated in the county. The closest was “OneLittle, Two Little,” an on-line children’sstore based in Keene in Essex County.

Even without national recognition, Whit-tington said he and Gerry will continue do-ing what they do.

“I’ve been there before. Life hasn’t alwaysbeen good for me,” said Whittington. “Iknow what it’s like to be in need and notknow who will help you. And, to havesomeone step up, completely unknown toyou and help, it’s something you never for-get.”

WEST CHAZY — BeekmantownElementary School has a connectionto a critically-acclaimed piece of mu-sic.

“Starsplitter Fanfare,” a piececomposed for the school by interna-tionally-known composer Brian Bal-mages, has received the Editor ’sChoice Award from the J.W. PepperCatalog, one of the world’s premieresheet music suppliers.

According to Ricki Marin, presi-dent of the school’s Parent-TeacherOrganization, the PTO commis-sioned the piece for the school to“further enhance and support bandand music at the elementary level.”

“I think it’s wonderful [the piece]is being recognized in such a posi-tive way and that the PTO was ableto provide an avenue for that suc-cess,” said Marin. “We wanted to dothis to enhance the students’ educa-tion and provide them with an expe-rience they might otherwise nothave had.”

The school began collaborating

with Balmages in the spring of 2008after school band director SusanNystoriak reached out to the com-poser through his Web site,www.brianbalmages.com. Nystori-ak said she chose Balmages becausethe elementary band has performedmany of his pieces inthe past.

“They’ve alwaysbeen my students’ fa-vorites,” she said.“He writes reallywell for elementarybands.”

Upon sending Bal-mages an e-mail, itdidn’t take long forhim to get back toher, said Nystoriak.

“I expected to hear a response, butI didn’t expect that it would workout in the timeframe that we werelooking to do something,” she said.

That was because the school waslooking to have the children performthe new piece in the spring of 2009,she said.

“He gathered information aboutthe district, asked me what level ofmusic I was hoping for him to

write,” said Nystoriak. “And, he wasable to complete the composition byJanuary.”

“He just had this idea in his headof a supernova going off and he kindof wrote the song to depict these ex-ploding stars in the universe,” she

continued. “And, the music is verydepictive of that.”

Balmages visited the school inMay, spending two days with stu-dents, attending a band rehearsaland taking questions from band stu-dents. The composer also attended aschool band concert that month, during which the students per-formed the world premiere of hissong. He addressed the audience,

stating he was most impressed withthe school and community supportof creating the song for the students.

“The students thoroughly enjoyedlearning about his favorite music, that which inspired him to become amusician, and his overall inspiration

for writing ‘StarsplitterFanfare,’” said Marin.“Hopefully, what the kidsgot out of this adventurewas something that couldone day help some ofthem pursue something inthe arts.”

Though Nystoriak saidshe was already happy forthe students to have a spe-cially-produced composi-tion, she said she was

even more excited when learning ofthe recognition in the J.W. PepperCatalog, which now make the sheetmusic for the song available to thepublic.

“It’s one of the pieces they deemto be the best music for that level,”explained Nystoriak. “There’s prob-ably only eight or 10 pieces at thatlevel that made the cut for Editor ’sChoice. It’s exciting.”

Presented annually by the SUNYsystem, the distinguished teachingprofessorship is bestowed uponfaculty who “demonstrate consis-tent superior mastery of teaching;outstanding service to students

and commitment to their ongoingintellectual growth, scholarshipand professional growth; and ad-herence to rigorous academic stan-dards and requirements.”

PLATTSBURGH — The portrait ofDr. Gordon C. Pollard, Morrisonville, now adorns a wall in Feinberg Libraryat the State University of New York atPlattsburgh.

The veteran anthropology profes-sor was honored during a ceremony atthe library Oct. 2 for his recent recog-nition as a SUNY distinguished teach-ing professor. Pollard is one of only 16faculty members throughout the en-tire SUNY system to receive the dis-tinguished teaching professorship ti-tle this year.

SUNY Plattsburgh president Dr.John C. Ettling commended Pollardfor receiving his recognition which isconsidered the highest honor be-stowed on a professor by the SUNYsystem.

“The faculty and staff are the great-est strength of any college campus andthe students here at SUNY Plattsburghare fortunate to have an outstandingfaculty and staff,” said Ettling. “So,Gordon, thank you and congratula-tions on behalf of all of us for yourservice to the college, to our alumni,to the community, to the discipline ofanthropology, but especially to ourstudents.”

The ceremony included remarksfrom Pollard’s colleagues, includingDr. John R. Moravek, an associate pro-fessor of geography who has workedwith Pollard for more than 40 years.Moravek credited Pollard for his con-tinued dedication to his professionand to his students.

“Gordon’s played a pivotal role in ahost of students’ lives in helping themto realize their full potential and, infact, reach levels of academic achieve-ment they never thought possible,”said Moravek.

On past field studies, whenMoravek’s classes would work side-by-side with Pollard’s, it made for aricher experience, said Moravek.

“It was always good to have Gordonand his students as part of the fieldtrips,” he said. “It clearly enhancedthe quality of the overall experiencefor my students when Gordon’s class-es were along.”

“Students find both his introducto-ry and his upper division courses rig-orous and intellectually-demanding,but they also find them interestingand stimulating,” said Dr. Patricia J.Higgins, provost and vice presidentfor academic affairs and a fellowSUNY distinguished teaching profes-sor. “Through these classes, he’s at-tracted many students into anthropol-

ogy in our own institution and beyondinto graduate study and into careersin anthropology and archaeology.”

“I think this is a marvelous oppor-tunity that he’s provided for stu-dents,” added Higgins.

Dr. Jin Kim, a communications pro-fessor at the university, said Pollardpersonified the words of the Chinesephilosopher Confucius.

“Teaching and learning are just twodifferent manifestations of the sameprocess,” said Kim. “The ability totake the perspective of his studentshas been a hallmark of his teaching ca-reer. If that quality can be developedby all members of our profession, thedire prediction of the imminent de-mise of colleges will have indeed beenproven misguided.”

Pollard thanked his colleagues fortheir words of praise and congratula-tions upon unveiling his portrait withEttling’s assistance.

“What can I say other than thankyou? It is a real honor to be among thisgroup,” Pollard said as he looked at awall adorned with portraits of otherdistinguished teaching professors.“I’ve had the pleasure of knowingmany of these people over the decadespersonally as colleagues and asfriends, and it is a true honor to behere.”

Disease Information / Early Detection One of the earliest signs of breast cancer can be an abnormality that shows up on a mammogram before it can be felt. The most common signs of breast cancer are a lump in the breast; abnormal thickening of the breast; or a change in the shape or color of the breast. Finding a lump or change in your breast does not necessarily mean you have breast cancer. Additional changes that may also be signs of breast cancer include:

• Any new, hard lump or thickening in any part of the breast • Change in breast size or shape • Dimpling or puckering of the skin • Swelling, redness or warmth that does not go away • Pain in one spot that does not vary with your monthly cycle • Pulling in of the nipple • Nipple discharge that starts suddenly and appears only in one breast • An itchy, sore or scaling area on one nipple

By the time you readthis I will have a newblog setup on our

Web site designed to allowoutdoorsmen an opportunityto exchange stories andideas. I hope to give some in-sight into what is and isn’tworking for me at any giventime and perhaps start a dia-logue with others who enjoythe outdoor pursuits as muchas I do.

I definitely don’t professto know it all, and wouldlove to learn new hunting and fishing practices that haveproven successful, so feel free to go to www.denpubs.comand drop me a line.

I also strongly encourage questions — from whether theice is gone from a particular pond to where heritage strainsof brookies have been stocked to the politics behind pro-posed state environmental policies. If I can’t answer you I’lldo my best to research an answer — or I’ll just make it up.(Kidding, of course).

Hopefully, if I can’t answer it, one of our bloggers can. AsI said, I don’t profess to know it all, but there is power innumbers. Combine our collective experience and we will allbe better for it.

I plan to share some of our on-line banter in futurecolumns.

I can also share an unlimited number of photographs on-line, so I strongly encourage you to submit your pictures bye-mail to me at [email protected] or by snail mail to 14Hand Ave., Elizabethtown N.Y. 12932.

Speaking of great photos, Jim Hotaling from the WillsboroFish and Game submitted a picture of the club’s youth pheas-ant hunt that took place Sept. 26. The hunt is open to youthages 12-15 and gives young hunters an opportunity to expe-rience some pheasant hunting action behind experienceddogs and their handlers. Another is planned for Oct. 11. Forinformation about the hunt, give Hotaling a call at 963-7430

or John Oliver at 963-4421.

Hunter’s screeningThe annual hunter ’s health screening which is offered

free-of-charge to anyone who shows up with his or her 2009hunting license will take place this year on Thursday, Oct.22 from 5-7 p.m.

The screening is designed to give hunters a review of theiroverall health before they exert themselves in the woods insearch of deer.

The health clinic will assess blood pressure, glucose, cho-lesterol and oxygen levels. Hospital staff will also check vi-sion, height and weight, providing an overall health picture.Participants will also have an EKG reading taken, whichmeasures heart health. A team of nurses and lab staff, led byDr. Moisan, will conduct the health screening. They will thenbe able to discuss concerns and offer advice.

The hospital lobby will be filled with information relatedto hunting. There will be a representative from the Sheriff ’sDepartment offering free gun locks and the state Departmentof Conservation will be on-hand to answer questions. Therewill be safety information, recipes, prize drawings andsnacks.

Salerno brothers Tony and Pat will also be on hand to an-swer questions and offer hunting tips. The Salerno familyhas produced a number of hunting videos and has been fea-tured in national publications.

friends and family memberswho are cancer survivors.

“I was motivated to do[the hike] in memory of fam-ily members and certainly insupport of Nancy and otherfriends who are cancer sur-vivors,” said Ryan, who hashiked with LaBaff on otheroccasions.

The hike, said Ryan, wasabout more than just exer-cise. It was about cama-raderie.

“It was wonderful, eventhough the weather was notideal,” she said. “We weregoing and determined to getto the top. We didn’t havemuch of a view, but we hadthe support of one another.”

“It was just a great hike,”she added.

Colleen Kaulfuss ofSaranac, who also went onthe hike, agreed. Cancer hasalso been a part of Kaulfuss’life, not affecting her, butthe lives of many membersof her family.

“I was only about 11 whenmy father was diagnosedwith pancreatic cancer,”said Kaulfuss. “But, he’s asurvivor.”

Kaulfuss’ sister was alsodiagnosed and has survived

malignant melanoma, though has lost grandpar-ents to cancer over theyears. The walk was a wayfor her to reflect on how can-cer has affected her and theones she loves, she said.

“It was just a fun day withfriends and a chance to getout and remember peoplewho have survived and alsopeople who are still strug-gling with cancer,” saidKaulfuss, who has alsohiked with LaBaff in thepast.

The specially-themedhike is something LaBaffhopes won’t be a one-timething, she said. And, she’snot alone.

“Now, they want to do itannually and actually raisesome money for cancerawareness,” said LaBaff.“There’s even more peoplewho want to be a part of itnext year.”

“We’d love to have morepeople involved,” saidKaulfuss.

Those interested in join-ing next year ’s hike are en-couraged to contact LaBaffat 315-379-9885, or Ryan at643-9386.

CorrectionThe last paragraph in a column written by Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Bernie Bassett in the Sept. 26 edition of this

newspaper was inadvertently cut off. The column should have ended with the following paragraph:The many meetings, special events, communications, budget activity, drafting of new resolutions, proposing policy,

developing local ordinances, day to day management, etc. will continue to the end of this year and then we will start allover again as Jan. 1, 2010 brings a new year and new challenges. I will continue to monitor the decisions our legisla-tors in Albany and Washington make while working locally to bring new jobs and economic opportunity to our town.A growing community is a healthy community and, as town supervisor, I plan to continue the progress!
