DESCRIPTION

Certainty-based location* accuracy with the capability of segmenting the work space into clinically meaningful zones (or areas). For clinical workflow, zones are typically patient rooms, patient bays, nursing stations, hallway segments, and other areas meaningful to provide care to patients. Mobile zones such as wheelchairs and stretchers are also opportunities to define a patient care area. Accuracy is thus defined as the ability to know with certainty that an asset is in a defined zone. If there is significance to know where the asset is within a zone, then the zone should be divided into smaller zones.

Technology Landscape The RTLS technology landscape has been very wide. Some of the major deployed RTLS technologies include Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Ultrasound, and Infrared. Much has been discussed about the level of accuracy that is needed in healthcare such as “room-level accuracy”. While this is important ,what is really needed is certainty-based location knowledge at the bed-level. This way you can accurately determine the association of the medical device specific to the patient as well as distinguish patient from patient when in close proximity to each other.

Clinical-Grade RTLS – The new standard for Healthcare

What is Clinical-Grade Locating?

o Certainty-based accuracy at the room-, bed-, bay- and chair-level

o Rapid location updates o Enterprise-class device and tag management o Extreme battery life o Small, full-feature tag form factors

Clinical-Grade Locating = Precise Location (Room 101) .

RF-only “error” At 20’ to 30’ radius – Clean Utility Room, Hallway, Rm 101 or Rm 102 At 10’ radius – Room 101, Clean Utility Room or Hallway

The Importance of Accuracy for: PAR-level management – Proximity of in-use, soiled and available assets present a challenge for PAR-level management; inaccurate location data = inaccurate PAR-level settings Available / In Use Status – Asset availability can be determined with logical business rules, but only if the RTLS has location certain accuracy. Cross Contamination Alerts and Reporting – Ensuring pumps and equipment went through the proper cleaning protocol requires accuracy.

Asset Management: Healthcare Applications PAR-Level Management This is the ability to set accurate PAR levels based on RTLS data. PAR-Level management includes automating equipment replenishment before departments run out. Also, staff members will never need to look for equipment, which reduces equipment hoarding and increases staff satisfaction.

Movement/Interaction Rules Asset management RTLS deployments enable the development and ongoing use of movement/interaction rules. These rules may be driven by each facility to enhance efficiency and safety.

Alerts and Alarms Asset Management applications should be able to leverage accurate location data to trigger alerts and alarms such as: • Cross-contamination alerts to reduce

infections • Exit alarms to prevent theft and loss • Alerts can be device- and/or

department-specific Process-Improvement Expertise Collection of 100% reliable asset utilization and asset interaction data may be used to improve business processes. RTLS data which is 100% accurate can support process improvement and effective change management to alter work habits.

Why Clinical-Grade?

RTLS Applications Deployed at Wake Forest o Asset Management

o Utilization o Loss Prevention o Preventative Maintenance Management o Capacity Management (Wheelchairs) o Purchasing reduction (via better Utilization) o Equipment rental management o Visibility to critical life saving mobile assets (equipment,

medicine, blood, etc.) o Temperature/Environmental Monitoring

o Improved accountability and compliance (by meeting Joint Commission guidelines)

o Risk Reduction - ensures the protection of temperature-sensitive consumables

o Alerts/notifications – Enables quick response when temperatures are out of acceptable ranges

o Time and cost savings -- Reduction of low-value staff time manually checking temperature readings

Why Clinical-Grade?

Other Benefits o Patient Safety and Accountability

o Falling/injury in patient room – Did staff use a lift for transfer?

o Location history and identify whether proper medical equipment was in the room (infusion pump and other critical equipment validation)

o Management of potential HAIs o Track location and temperature of blood and

temperature-sensitive materials o RTLS has been the impetus for daily safety

meeting attended and led by senior hospital executives o RTLS data is routinely leveraged to take corrective

action and preventative action o Improved Healthcare Experience

o Real-Time Analysis via hand-held tablets to help staff quickly find available equipment

o Improve Staff Member and Patient Experience
