#GivingTuesday

Mark your calendars for #GivingTuesday. This is a day to remember The Banquet and its guests.

This year #GivingTuesday is Tuesday, November 29, 2016. It’s set aside as a day to make a contribution to a program you believe in.

There’s Black Friday for shopping, Cyber Monday for shopping and #GivingTuesday for giving back to those in need.

Make your online donations at www.thebanquetsf.org Thank you for your contributions and for helping our guests.

Your financial gifts sustain The Banquet ministry by supporting the ongoing general operating expenses of The Banquet. As a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization, The Banquet relies solely on private donations of materials and cash to pay for milk, coffee and juice; food and equipment; staffing and building costs. Your gifts allow us to continue to help the thousands of guests who pass through these doors every year. The Banquet not only provides meals for those in need but also provides 25,000+ volunteers the opportunity to serve others. This ministry allows people to come together to share food and fellowship at a common table. Please support The Banquet ministry.

ROUNDUPforMilk“My mom says we drink milk at The Banquet and water at home.”

– 6 year old Taya

The days of skimming the cream from the 5-gallon bucket of milk that you collected from the barn are long gone. Many children do not have access to milk because of the cost. Each night Banquet guests consume about 20-25 gallons of milk costing The Banquet $2,300 each month for milk. Each gallon costs between $2.25 and $2.50 depending on market price.

Groups that sponsor a meal commit to cooking, serving and paying for the food. The price of that meal does not include the cost of the milk that is served during the meal. If your group is serving a meal at The Banquet please consider “rounding up” the price on the invoice to the nearest $100. That contribution toward milk will make a world of difference toward our milk bill.

You may also give a specific gift toward our milk fund. Thank you for your generosity.

Come to Eat. Come to Serve. Come to Offer Hope.

An Experience That Sticks!

We have stickers of our Banquet logo! Put them on your car, computer, water bottle or anything you want. These are high quality, super durable stickers that will look like new after harsh weather conditions and a run through the dishwasher. Did you know we have t-shirts too? Come by, volunteer, and get some Banquet swag!

The Banquet serves 13 meals a week to low income families and individuals in our community. In a perfect world, those meals are all sponsored by a group of 20 to 40 volunteers, who take on the responsibility of preparing, serving, and cleaning up after each meal. Equally important is their commitment to cover the cost of the meal.

As we continue to grow to meet the needs of our community, the need for volunteers, groups, and financial support increases. Our new website allows volunteers to go online and see each date that is open to serve, which is signified on our calendar by a red box. If you look on our website right now there is an uncomfortable amount of red in the upcoming months. If a group never signs up to serve one of the meals marked in red that is when we call on our Angels. “Angels” are individual volunteers who save the day by responding to texts or phone calls with “yes I can serve!” Often, individual angels give a contribution toward the meal, which is appreciated but not required, resulting in each meal that is covered by angels being a meal that is not paid for. Atotalof60mealswerestaffedbyAngelsthissummer(May-August).That’smorethan$30,000offoodcoststhatwaspaidforusingmoneyin reserve. The Banquet is able to continue meeting the needs of our community through the generosity of serving groups and other donors. We need groups to sign up to serve and sponsor each open meal on our calendar. No group is too small – if you only have a few people, we will combine you up with another small group to get a meal covered. If you are unable to serve consider doing a small fundraiser to cover the cost of a meal.

The average plate of food at The Banquet is around $2.50 but that adds up when we are serving approximately 500 people at every evening meal.

Estimated Meal Costs:

Breakfast-$350-$.500 Dinner-$750 and upBanquet West-$500 Saturday Lunch-$750 and up

I have been a volunteer dining room coordinator for almost 8 ½ years. I have done lots of volunteering over the years for many other organizations but I honestly can say that working at The Banquet is truly my calling. The Banquet guests and staff have become like family to me. Many of the guests I would call my friends and often refer to them as “my peeps.”For those of you that have never had the experience of serving at The Banquet, please come. Your heart will be full when you leave. Get your employer or your church involved to fund the meal and serve our guests. There is such a need in the community for The Banquet. The fellowship you will share with our guests is something you will take with you forever.

Tag us on Facebook and TwitterDid you have an amazing time serving? Show us! We love to see photos of our volunteers so snap some while serving or take a group photo and share it on social media. Don’t forget to tag us! Facebook: Banquet Sioux FallsTwitter: TheBanquetSF

Bingo at The Banquet Theme: Celebrate our Veterans! When: Nov. 12th; 3p-5pWhere: The Banquet downtown, 900 E. 8th St., Sioux Falls

November 12th will mark the first of many Bingo Nights hosted in The Banquet dining room downtown and we are dedicating this first event to our Veterans. Each event is a mini fundraiser with the goal of raising enough money to cover the cost of a Banquet breakfast which is $350. Popcorn and water will be provided and each bingo card costs $1. Come support The Banquet while having a little fun! ALL Veterans and family members are invited to come out to this event. We want to pack the dining room full so spread the word!

In the past decade The Banquet has seen significant changes. The number of guests utilizing The Banquet meals has increased by 40% since expanded to serving 13 meals per week and opening a second site serving those most in need in the Northwest part of Sioux Falls. These expanded services has led to an increase of 45% in operating cost in addition to higher costs for meals and milk. Special events like the Run for Food and Festival of Men’s Voices help us off set these costs while providing family activities and entertainment opportunities for our community. Please consider sponsoring, attending and supporting these very worthwhile events in our community.

If you don’t live in Sioux Falls gather your friends and run where you are. Please send contributions to The Ban-quet’s Run for Food. $10 suggested donation per runner.

RUN, WALK OR STAY IN BED - But please send in your contribution to The Banquet on or before Thanksgiving Day for families who rely on us for a hot, nutritious meal. The Run for Food is an event held every Thanksgiving morning at The Banquet. Families and individuals take part in a 1 mile fun run/walk, 5k or 10k run. Runners give money to participate which benefits The Banquet’s food costs. We are seeking larger gifts and sponsorships to support general operations, staffing needs and food costs for The Banquet guests. The cost of an evening meal at The Banquet is approximately $1,000. Sponsors are recognized on a banner, newsletter, website, social media and promotional materials.

Project:SOSGives6,000BackpacksFilledwithSchoolSuppliestoStudentsJust ten minutes into Project: SOS Distribution Day, a fourth grade girl’s beautiful blue eyes lit up as she reached out for and hugged her brand new backpack. The theme of her backpack was “Frozen” but her beaming face truly warmed the hearts of the volunteers who helped her find it. That scene was repeated thousands of times over as we placed over 6,000 backpacks into the hands of happy, grateful children from Sioux Falls and surrounding school districts. This would not be possible without generous donors who support this life-changing program through monetary contributions, donations of school supplies and volunteer hours. Thank you!

Now is the time to keep shopping. Retail stores are discounting backpacks and supplies for much needed shelf space. Please continue to shop for school supplies for children while items are discounted. Thank you for your continued support of this very worthwhile program.

A huge thank you goes to Meta Payment Systems for their school supply collection and $4,400 gift to support Project: SOS as well as Citi staff for their gift of 100 boxes supplies and $4,600 in donations. The children appreciate your gifts!

Creative FundraisingRaising money to sponsor a meal is real easy if you are willing to get a little creative. The Roosevelt Rough Riders Dance Team hosted a private show for friends and family to raise the money for the Banquet West meal they served in August. They were able to raise the total amount needed for their meal, $500. In case you aren’t a dancer there are many other ways to raise money for your meal sponsorship. Groups in the past have started GoFundMe pages on Facebook and raised their total amount in just a few hours. Other ideas are bake sales, car washes, talent shows, a special collection at your church, lemonade stands, or even asking a local business to sponsor, just to name a few. Get creative and share with us how you raise money to serve at The Banquet.

We’re Certified!

All Banquet staff is now CPR/AED certified thanks to Jeremy at the Sioux Falls Fire Department.

LawEnforcementShowKidsHowtoHaveFun!From catching fish to riding Go-Karts at Thunder Road, law enforcement know how to show kids a good time. Thank you to Sioux Falls Police for organizing “Cast with a Cop” and “Cops, Kids & Karts” for children who wouldn’t have these opportunities. The events pair children with a law enforcement officer during a fun outing.

With help from the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, Soukup Construction, Inc., Wild Dakota, Metro Communications, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Pizza Ranch, Lewis Drug and Dairy Queen dozens of children benefitted from the two events. The children appreciate all you do for them! One of our kids was even treated to a banana split for his birthday!

University Students Fulfill the Need for Volunteers

On August 29th, we had the opportunity to host college freshman from Augustana University and the University of Sioux Falls for Service Day. Augie students helped us organized our school supplies after Project: SOS, while USF students helped us get some much needed cleaning done. We appreciate all the support we get from our local University students!

Students from USF Respond to our Call for Help.

The week of Labor Day is often the first week of school for many here in Sioux Falls and it can be difficult to find volunteer groups to commit during such a busy time of the year. We were in desperate need to fill meals with volunteers and we called on USF chaplain Dennis Thum to help us get the word out. The result was outstanding! Roughly 30 students from USF gathered together to serve meals throughout the week. We could not have done it without their help. A special thank you to Kevin Cole who brought his English class down to serve on a Friday morning. We appreciate all our college students do for us! We hope to see you all back at The Banquet!

SERVEonthe RoadThis summer we had SERVE mission trip youth groups come from near and far to offer helping hands at The Banquet. They packed backpacks for our Project: SOS program and helped stuff newsletters. THANKS!

Our children’s area is a place for kids to go while their parents are waiting in line to eat or to come and play while they are waiting for their parents to finish eating. You are the host and you control the activity! We have supplies for coloring, crafts, reading, and playing Wii! You can also make popcorn. Contact Dakotah at [email protected] to volunteer.
