It feels like a long time since we looked at classification so before we go to Hackney City Farm it would be a good idea to refresh our minds on how classification works

What you need to do

Task oneClassification of the Sweet Kingdom. In your groups you will be given a set of sweets in a tub (don’t eat them!). These sweets all have some characteristics in common with each other, and some characteristics that are different.

Your first task is to create a key that separates out all of the sweets into individual types. You can work in small groups to do this and it should take no more than 15 minutes.

Task twoOn Monday we will have a group discussion about the importance of classification. Why do we classify and is it the things we have in common that are important or are the differences

more important when it comes to classification.

You will be told which side you will be for in the discussion. The two options are:

1. The differences between organisms are more important.

2. The similarities between organisms are more important.

One thing I would like you to think about as well before Mondays lesson is Why classification is important. Can you come up with one reason why we need to classify organisms?

You can bring notes to the discussion with you.

"The moment we want to believe something, we suddenly see all the arguments for it, and become blind to the arguments against it."
