O n Thursday, May 15, the St. Mary’s Seminary & University community gathered for graduation to mark the achievements of twenty-one seminarians and twen- ty-two E.I. students. It was a celebratory evening with diplomas handed to each grad- uate by the Chancellor, Archbishop William E. Lori. Honorary doctorates were given to two leaders of faith communities. We honored Bishop Donald Trautman, the bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Erie who had been a long time Board member and a shepherd of the flock in Erie for more than twenty years, and Rabbi Joel Zaiman who was Senior Rabbi of Chizuk Amuno in Baltimore for 23 years. A simulating and inspiring graduation address was delivered by Dr. Christopher Leighton, the Executive Director of the Institute for Jewish and Christian Studies. While that May evening marked the completion of an academic program, it also ini- tiated a commencement, especially for the 12 deacons who were leaving the next day to prepare for ordination in their respective dioceses. This commencement, this movement to ordination as priests after the heart of Christ, the Good Shepherd is the center of what St. Mary’s has always been about. New assignments for the recent graduates are listed in this issue of Class Notes. They have begun their ministry of Word, Sacrament, and Shepherding. They have joined their thousands of priest brothers who are alumni. Our prayers go with them in a special way in these early months of priestly ministry as our prayers go with all of our alumni in their lives as disciples and priests. Ad multos annos! Senior Priests Retreat

From May 19-23, 2014, eighteen retired, semi-retired, or ordained forty years or more priests gathered at St. Mary’sCenter for Continuing Formation for a retreat. For more than a dozen years we Senior Priests, Veterans of theCampaign, have made our annual retreat together. We learned experientially that Faith, Hope and Love, wonder-

fully interwoven, are the driving force of our lives. Under the inspiration of Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict weadvanced toward full communion with God inconcrete communion with one another. Our joyfulexperience has now been confirmed and validatedby Lumen Fidei, the first encyclical of Pope Francis. This marvelous document will serve as the basis forour retreat. We anticipate that the Light of Faithwill restore the primacy of God in Christ to thecenter of our lives, both as Church and as individ-uals. We know that when we dwell on the mysteryof our priestly vocation in fraternal companionshiprather than as isolated individuals, our insightshave become richer and more enduring.
