THE UNIT LESSON PLAN/SHORT TERM CURRICULUM

information and enrichment sheetClass III Subject: English [Information given to enhance and encourage understanding of the topic. This is for study. This will be assessed.] ADVERB

Adverbs are words that modify a verb (He drove slowly. How did he drive?)

an adjective (He drove a very fast car. How fast was his car?)

another adverb (She walked quite slowly down the aisle. How slowly did she walk?)

Adverbs frequently end in -ly; however, many words and phrases not ending in -ly serve an adverbial function and an -ly ending is not a guarantee that a word is an adverb. The words lovely, lonely, motherly, friendly, for instance, are adjectives:

That lovely woman lives in a friendly neighborhood. Don't use an adjective when you need an adverb instead.Example:1. "Anthony is real smart"

2. "This pizza sauce is real salty." Real is an adjective, so it cannot modify another adjective like smart or salty. What people should say is "Anthony is really smart" or "This pizza sauce is really salty." Adjectives modify nouns or pronouns (eg: nice dress, he is intelligent! ), while adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs (eg: too slowly, more carefully). Adjectives provide answers to what kind, which one, and how many (countable noun), how much (uncountable noun), while adverbs answer how, when, and where. We often use more and most, less and least to show degree with adverbs:

With sneakers on, she could move more quickly among the patients.

The flowers were the most beautifully arranged creations I've ever seen. She worked less confidently after her accident.

That was the least skillfully done performance I've seen in years.

Kinds of Adverbs: We will see, adverbs often tell when, where, how or under what conditions something happens or happened. Adverbs of MannerThese adverbs tell us that in which manner the action occurs or how the action occurs or occurred or will occur.

Examples:

She speaks loudly. He was driving slowly. You replied correctly. He runs fast. They solved the problem easily.Listen to me carefully.

Adverb of Place:Adverb of place tells us about the place of action or where action occurs/occurred/will occur.e.g. here, there, near, somewhere, outside, ahead, on the top, at some place.

Examples:

He will come here. The children are playing outside. He was standing near the wall. They were flying kites on the top of hill.He lives somewhere in New York. She went upstairs.

Adverb of timeThese adverbs tell us about the time of action. e.g. now, then, soon, tomorrow, yesterday, today, tonight, again, early, yesterday. Examples. I will buy a computer tomorrow. The guest came yesterday. Do it now.She is still waiting for her brother. He got up early in the morning.
