Scholarly Research and Teaching Interests

Until recently, my published work has focused principally on the social and economic history of the

ancient Near/Middle East, with particular concentration on the study of ancient Mesopotamian systems of

social and economic organization and their mechanisms in the third and second millennia B.C.E., as well as

on the study of early urbanization, state formation, and cross-cultural interaction in the ancient Near/Middle

East and Egypt, as well as the Bronze Age Aegean. My interest in the social and economic history of the

ancient world also encompasses the Classical Mediterranean and Hellenistic and Roman/Byzantine

Near/Middle East.

Since 1984, however, I have also developed a scholarly and strong teaching interest in the history of

the Islamic-era and, especially, the modern Middle East, with particular focus on the history of the

relationships between the Middle East and the West, including the Arab-Israeli relationship and conflict. I

have created and taught courses ranging from undergraduate surveys in the history of “Western

Civilization,” the ancient history and archaeology of the Near East and Egypt, the history of the Middle East

from the time of the prophet Muhammad to the present, and the history of Iran and Iraq from earliest times

to the present, to advanced and graduate courses, colloquia, and research seminars on both the ancient and

the modern Near/Middle East, such as: the Earliest Civilizations and States in the Bronze Age Near East,

Trade and Diplomacy in the Late Bronze Age Near East, the Middle East in the Modern Era, the Middle East

and the West from Antiquity to the Present, and (most recently) the Modern Middle East: Transnational and

Comparative Perspectives.

Previous Employment

1990 - present: Professor of History, Central Michigan University (awarded Professorial Salary Increments,

Aug., 1994; Aug., 2004; June, 2015)

Jan., 1998 – July, 2002: Chair, Departmentt of History, Central Michigan University

1986-1990: Associate Professor of History, Central Michigan University

Page 2: Civilization,” the ancient history and archaeology of … · taught an introductory survey of the history and archaeology of ancient Egypt. 1976: ... Ancient Near East,” in The

1982-1986: Assistant Professor of History, Central Michigan University (awarded tenure, June, 1985)

1978- 1979: Instructor, Department of Continuing Education, University of Arizona, Tucson. I developed and

taught an introductory survey of the history and archaeology of ancient Egypt.

1976: Associate Faculty, Pima Community College, Tucson. My responsibilities entailed the development

and teaching of a survey course in the history of Western Civilization up to the Protestant Reformation.

1974-1975: Teaching Assistant, Graduate Group in Ancient History, University of Pennsylvania. Weekly

lectures and discussion groups for undergraduate survey courses in the history of ancient Greece (

Instructor: Prof. Michael H. Jameson) and in the history and archaeology of the ancient Near East

(Instructor: Prof. James D. Muhly).

Archaeological Fieldwork and Administration

November, 1991: Field epigrapher and site supervisor for excavations at Tell es-Sweyhat, northern Syria,

directed by Dr. Thomas A. Holland (Oriental Institute, University of Chicago) and Dr. Richard L. Zettler

(University Museum, University of Pennsylvania)

1980 - 1982: Occasional fieldwork during my tenure as editor for the Navajo Nation Cultural Resource

Management Program

1980 - 1982: Editor for Archaeological and Ethnographic Publications, Navajo Nation Cultural Resource

Management Program, Window Rock, Arizona

1980 - 1981: Editor for Archaeological Publications, Western Archeological Center, National Park Service,

Tucson.

1978 - 1980: Editor for Archaeological Publications, Arizona State Museum, University of Arizona, Tucson.

My responsibilities in the three positions listed above entailed the copy-editing - and, generally, the

significant rewriting - of drafts of numerous book-length reports and monographs on archaeological and

ethnographic projects undertaken by the sponsoring institutions in Arizona and New Mexico. By

familiarizing me even more with the methodology and theoretical perspectives of American anthropological

archaeology, which is imbued with a distinct interdisciplinary and cultural-anthropological orientation, my

employment with these institutions has had significant impact on my own approaches to the study of ancient

societies.

1976 - 1978: Research Assistant, Bureau of Ethnic Research, Department of Anthropology, University of

Arizona, Tucson. My responsibilities entailed the writing of abstracts of primary historical documents

relating to the Paiute tribe of Pyramid Lake Reservation, Nevada.

June-August, 1975: Student at the University of Arizona Archaeological Field School at Grasshopper Ruin,

near Cibecue, Arizona (on the White Mountain Apache Reservation). This experience entailed intensive,

rigorous training in archaeological method, theory, and excavation technique at a large prehistoric pueblo.

Director: Dr. William A. Longacre, Department of Anthropology, University of Arizona.

June-July, 1973: Site supervisor for excavations at the Franchthi Cave site in the Greek Argolid. My

responsibilities entailed supervision of excavation and preliminary analysis of recovered artifacts. Excavation

was conducted under the joint auspices of the University of Pennsylvania and Indiana University. Director:

Dr. Thomas W. Jacobsen, Department of Classical Studies, Indiana University.
