THE SCARECROW’S GOT A BRAIN!Delia Petrus

Characters:JANE, a compassionate, sweet young girl in seventh grade that loves theatre and her friends, but despises another girl named Marcie. Although she is a great actor, she sometimes thinks she is the best and is a bit arrogant. Jane is very nice and understanding, with a yearning for adventure and fun. Her favorite play is The Wizard of Oz. Jane is accepting of bad things thrown at her, but that is not to say she doesn’t stand up for herself. ARIELLE/TIN MAN, one of Jane’s friends that is also in seventh grade and likes theatre. Arielle is a bit mean and snarky, and she feels she lacks compassion. The Tin Man is a tin woodsman that is nothing like he is in the movie “The Wizard of Oz.” He has a heart and is very compassionate. ANNIE/SCARECROW, Jane’s closest friend, who is also involved in theatre productions and is in seventh grade. Annie is not the brightest of their friend group, and often feels she could be smarter. The Scarecrow is Jane’s closest companion in Oz. The Scarecrow, unlike in the Wizard of Oz movie, definitely has a brain! He is very, very smart because the world of Oz is all turned around. He also seems to know a lot more about the history of Oz, more so than the other characters do. The Scarecrow is very patient and caring. LAUREN/LION, another of Jane’s friends, Lauren is in seventh grade and is involved in theatre and helps with costumes. She is very shy, and has a quiet voice. A lot of the time, Lauren wishes to be braver and not as cowardly and afraid of things. The Lion is another creature in Oz that is different from in the movie. The Lion is a typical lion and has a lot of courage. He does not have any fear and is not startled or frightened by anything in Oz. MARCIE/WICKED WITCH, a young seventh grader additionally involved in theatre. When the larger roles are casted, the competition usually lies between Marcie and Jane as they both show a lot of promise as young actors. Marcie always thinks that she is so much better at Jane at everything. She also has started bullying Jane around the time play rehearsals started. The Wicked Witch is a very wicked addition to Oz. She is green and looks very frightening. She is very evil and has very powerful powers. MRS. CARRIE/GLINDA, The school’s theatre teacher who helps direct and work through plays. She is middle aged and really nice. Glinda is the good witch in Oz and is older and very helpful. She is also not as powerful as the Wicked Witch. MUNCHKINS 1, 2, 3, 4, are four little munchkins who bobble and bubble with every word. They are very happy and extroverted. The munchkins like to practice their songs to anybody that will listen. *APPLE TREE- A tree that bears apples and is getting over a cold, therefor has a very deep scruffy voice. The apple tree is nice, as there are no bad guys I this Oz, and happily lends out his apples to the Scarecrow and Jane.*MONKEY- A monkey in Oz, that is just trying to eat a banana in the woods. He is not evil, and really just wants to mind its own business.

* (Has a singular, very short appearance with very few [yet important] lines, around

minimal characters, and can easily be double casted by someone not in that scene.)

Setting:The play is set in the modern day world in California. More specifically, inside a middle school. It is very hot out, and inside the school there is a theatre. Inside the theatre there is a stage where they rehearse, next to some chairs where the kids work on scripts and costumes. The second setting is mainly in Oz, with a small pond, the yellow brick road, and lollipop trees, which completes Oz to be a beautiful place. Later on the setting changes to the cornfields where there is a lot of corn, and some fences. After this there is also the apple orchards which can be shown by the apple tree itself. After this the setting takes place in the woods. Finally, the play wraps up in the emerald city and then Glinda’s castle, connected by the yellow brick road. Once Jane makes it back home, she is in a hospital bed next to Marcie, who is also in a hospital bed. These settings, although many, are crucial to keeping the “Wizard of Oz” feeling. The settings are already shown vividly throughout dialogue, so minimal props will be needed to further show the “elaborate” settings.

Scene 1Scene begins inside a middle school in California. Inside the theater room, there is a stage and chairs to one side. LAUREN, ANNIE, and ARIELLE enter the theater together and walk up to Jane. They have needles and threads, fabrics, lace, and buttons. Jane is in her dress rehearsal Dorothy dress.

JANEHey guys! Oh I couldn’t wait to see you today! My algebra class is so hard, it’s nice to have theater to look forward to, especially my favorite play, “The Wizard of Oz!”

ARIELLETheater sucks, but I’m glad you like it Jane! I only come so I don’t have to spend time with my annoying little brother, and then I shove it in his face when I get a good role to make costumes for!

(ARIELLE sews buttons onto JANE’s dress.)

ANNIEWow Arielle, that’s mean!

(ANNIE sews different rips together. Then LAUREN sits on the floor, and puts lace on her dress with a hot glue gun.)

ARIELLEI’m trying to be nice Annie, but it’s hard. You’re right though, I should stop being mean to my little brother!

2

Page 3: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

ANNIEHey no hard feelings! My little sister is so annoying, I sometimes wish I was an only child.

LAUREN (shyly)More like lonely child! I would trade anything for a sibling.

JANEOh you can have my older stinky brother. All he does is watch TV in his underpants, and eat day-old pizza!

ANNIEWe’re good, Jane!

(They all start laughing and smiling.)

JANEGuys, I’m so happy I got the part of Dorothy!

ARIELLEWell you're the best actress, of course you would! After I finish up here, I still have to sew this costume for a stupid tree.

ANNIECool! You should sew real apples on! And I don’t think my mom will let me help with costumes much longer, she says I have to get a tutor for math.

JANEOh Annie that sucks! Maybe I can help you with your math, we can’t break up the costume crew!

ARIELLEWe’ve been together through everything! The beauty and the beast play, the little mermaid play, Cinderella, and about a dozen more. And we’ve made the costumes rule!

ANNIEDon’t forget about Jane’s acting, she’s made the audience sit at the edges of their seats!

JANEAww thanks! It is so amazing working on the plays with you guys, you make everything so enjoyable, and…well I really could use some joy in my life.

LAUREN (whispers)Because of Marcie?

3

ANNIEShe’s been so unbearable ever sense about a month ago, when the play rehearsals started. Jane, you need something to take your mind off all this stress. Hey I have an idea! Let’s go ice-skating after theater.

ARIELLE(Looks up at Annie and stops what she’s doing.)

You do know it’s basically summer here in California, right?

ANNIEYes, but…well…

LAURENThere is an indoor skating rink just a little west of Sacramento.

JANEWell that sounds awesome, guys!

ARIELLENo way! I’d rather get milkshakes!

ANNIEI want to go ice-skating! Jane loves ice skating! It’s her favorite activity.

(ANNIE gives Jane a questioning look and JANE nods to confirm her question.)

JANEI do love ice-skating, but why don’t we just look up the hours to both places.

(JANE looks at her phone.)Ok, so the ice rink is open until five, and the ice cream shop is open until ten.

ANNIEWell, we could still make it if we hurry!

ARIELLEAnnie, it’s already 4:30, and theater doesn’t end until six!

LAURENSo are we getting milkshakes?

JANELooks like it!

4

Page 5: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

ANNIEFine, but I call not the wobbly stool!

ARIELLEWhatever Annie. Okay…and…done!

(Stops working on costume) Jane, you’re costume looks awesome so far! Now I have to sew these tree branches for the apple tree.

(Begins working on tree branches.)

JANEOkay, and thanks for all the work on this, it’s gonna be so pretty! Oh and Lauren, can you curl my hair opening night?

LAURENI’d love to, but the iron might burn me! I’ll get Stacy to.

ANNIEOk, and I already sewed Jane some blue and white bows for her hair.

ARIELLEYes, Jane’s costume will look amazing! But uh, guys... Marcie is over there. I think she just saw you Jane! Quick, turn around!

JANEI can't believe that horrible threat she sneered at me before class, I don't understand!

ANNIEYeah, you're like the nicest person ever! You should get a golden globe award for that.

ARIELLEThat’s…not exactly how it works Annie. And don't look now, she's coming our way!

(Girls stop working on Jane’s dress and she steps out of it. They pull their scripts up to their faces. Then Marcie comes up to them and the girls pull their papers down, annoyed.)

MARCIE(The three girls stand behind Jane as Marcie stands across from them.)

Hello losers. Jane. Rather, Dorothy. Well I received the best role, the wicked witch. Mrs. Carrie probably didn't think you could be bold or loud enough for this role. Or maybe she just needed some random little girl to fill the role of that boring country girl, while she gave me power!

5

Page 6: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

JANEThere’s something wrong with the role of Dorothy? I'm quite satisfied.

MARCIEOh of course you are! You’re satisfied by anything, just like that baggy sweatshirt from goodwill!

(MARCIE pulls her sweatshirt off.) Or maybe that skirt that’s way too short!

(MARCIE pushes JANE to the ground.)

JANEHey! Those are my clothes! You can't do that! Please, just leave me alone!

(LAUREN backs up, and exits.)

MARCIE Yeah, well I just did. What are you gonna do about it Dorothy? Go run to little Toto!

(Snickers meanly.)

ARIELLEHey, leave my friend alone. Stop being so mean! She didn't do anything to you.

(Walks in front of Jane.)MARCIE

Yes she did. She was born.

ANNIEWell I can’t believe you would act this way to my friend. You should seriously go to jail for life!

(Walks in front of Jane also.)

JANEMarcie, this is my favorite play, and I got my favorite part! Can you please not ruin this for me!

(Sits down and tries to highlight her script.)

MARCIEWhat am I ruining? I mean, there are bad guys in the play, I guess you’ll just have to stick through it. Or are you gonna have to quit? Poor little Janie can’t handle meanie bad guys, and is going to quit.

(Pulls script away from Jane.)

JANEOf course not! I would never! You can’t ruin this for me; I won’t let you!

(Pulls script back.)

6

Page 7: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

ANNIEWay to get her, Jane!

JANEI guess…was I too mean?

ARIELLEOf course not! Maybe I’d think so if I had enough compassion as you though.

MRS.CARRIEOkay ladies and gentlemen! Let's start with a scene towards the end I need to work out a bit.

(Flips pages.) Okay, there are only two characters here, Dorothy and The Wicked Witch.

(JANE and MARCIE walk up onto the stage and ARIELLE, ANNIE, and LAUREN exit to the dressing rooms.)

Okay, so in this scene, page 60(Both girls flip their pages and start reading.)

The Wicked Witch has Dorothy tied up, and is threatening her for her red slippers.(JANE gets into the chair and ties herself. MRS.CARRIE starts some

dramatic music on the piano, and MARCIE starts with her lines.)

MARCIESo Dorothy, you thought you could out wit me, huh! Well you're wrong of course!

JANE(Mutters)

Why do bad guys have to exist in stories?

MARCIE(Yelling)

Dorothy, some little farm girl. What on earth are you doing, killing my sister and trying to steal my slippers!!! You are a horrible person and don't deserve to walk the lands of Oz. Why can't you just leave!!! Well I did give you a chance but you didn't take it. I HATE you and everything you bring to Oz.

JANE(Crying)

Why do there have to be bad guys in Oz!

(An earthquake rumbles and everyone falls down and the lights go dark. Seconds later the lights come back on, and JANE is wearing an elaborate Dorothy dress. All around her are lollipops and pretty flowers and a beautiful little pond.)

7

Page 8: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

JANEWh- where am I?

(GLINDA enters in an elaborate costume.)

GLINDAYou are in Oz my dear!

JANEHey, you look an awful bit like my theater teacher!

GLINDAWhat is this theater you speak of?

JANEOh it’s where…OH MY GOSH!!!!!!! ARE THOSE LOLLIPOP TREES?

GLINDAYes, would you like some?

JANEOf course!

(JANE runs over and grabs two lollipops then runs back and hands one to the witch, and licks the lollipops.)

GLINDASo, I am Glinda the good witch! Who are you?

JANEWell, I’m Jane! Oh I LOVE Oz! I hope I killed the wicked witch?

GLINDAYou should never wish to kill someone! And who’s the wicked witch?

JANEYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills right away, and one that torments Dorothy. But right before I came here I wished there weren’t any bad guys so maybe that altered the story.

GLINDAMaybe…did you say the wizard of Oz?

JANEYeah! I love the movie so much!

GLINDA

8

Page 9: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

Movie? I was talking about the WIZARD of Oz.

JANEOh yeah! He’s in the movie too! Oh and I can’t wait to see the Emerald City, it sounds so cool!

GLINDAWell… it is very green. I would take you there myself Jane, but I’m sorry, I have to go and complete my duties as a good witch.

JANEOk, but…how will I get home?

GLINDAGo back the way you came?

JANEI don’t even know how I got here! I can’t be stuck here forever!

GLINDAWell then, if you don’t know, and I don’t know; then you’ll have to see the wizard. In fact, I’ll take you over to the munchkins right now, and they’ll show you the way!

(GLINDA walks JANE over to a big patch of flowers, where they suddenly pop up and are munchkins!)

JANEOz without bad guys is gonna be so awesome!

(GLINDA exits and waves to JANE)

MUNCHKIN1Hello, young gal!

MUNCHKIN2Are you a witch?

MUNCHKIN3She’s a witch?

MUNCHKIN4She’s a witch!

JANEOh, I’m not a witch, my name is-

MUNCHKIN1It doesn’t matter, let us sing our song to you!

JANEI love your- uh, song…but I should be getting o my way, I eventually want to see the wizard; see in a while I want to get home to California…

MUNCHKIN2She wants to see the wizard!

MUNCHKIN3The Wonderful Wizard of Oz?

MUNCHKIN4The powerful wizard of Oz!

JANESO, do you know where to find him?

MUNCHKIN1Of course! He’s in Emerald City.

MUNCHKIN2You’ll have to follow the yellow brick road!

MUNCHKIN3The yellow brick road?

MUNCHKIN4The yellow brick road!

MUNCHKIN1Let’s sing her another song!

MUNCHKINSShe wants to see the wizard of Oz!She’ll follow the yellow brick road! She wants to get home to Cali

MUNCHKINSShe wants to visit the wizard of Oz,So she must follow the yellow brick road!

MUNCHKIN3Ok, we’re done with this song, it’s not our best!

MUNCHKIN4So, you’re off to the yellow brick road?

JANEOh, yes, thank you! But I love Oz so much I do suppose I could stay awhile…

MUNCHKIN1We know you’ll like it here!

MUNCHKIN2Ok, just follow the yellow brick road right here until you get to the wizard, but take your time in Oz!

(JANE starts walking down the road, smiling and waving bye.)

MUNCHKIN3Hope you don’t get bored!

MUNCHKIN4We’ll see you around!

JANEI sure do hope so! I hope I have as much fun in the rest of Oz as I did here! No bad guys rules!

MUNCHKINSBYE!!!

(JANE waves, skipping down the road. Lights fade out. )

11

Page 12: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

Scene 2(Lights come on and Jane is looking at her map with the cornfield right in front her. A scarecrow is stuck leaning on a piece of wood and straw is all over the place.)

JANEOkay. Now, do I want to go this way? Or this way? Or…wait that’s the way I came. I think I’ll go this way…

(Continues looking at map, but heads to the left.)

SCARECROW (offstage)You don’t want to go that way!

JANEWho said that! Hey wait, this is about where Dorothy meets the scarecrow! Oh I can’t wait for him to do his “If I only had a brain” dance!

(JANE walks up to the scarecrow and lights now show him.)

SCARECROWDon’t think of me as a brusque person, I was only warning you that to your left are some idiosyncratic potholes in that road ahead.

JANEOh wow! Look at this, the real life Scarecrow in Oz.

SCARECROWThat would be me. And don’t call me a scarecrow, my name is Fredrick Aristotle Napoleon O’Malley III.

JANEI think I’ll call you Scarecrow.

SCARECROWWell, that will have to do. Would you mind being very gracious and gathering up all of that straw those birds tore out from me?

JANESure, and my name is Jane.

(Begins picking up straw.)

SCARECROWIs that short for Jannellyn?

JANENo, just Jane.

12

Page 13: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

SCARECROWWell Jane, where do you live in Oz? I’m afraid I’ve never seen you before.

JANEOh I don’t live here, I just…well…appeared here.

SCARECROWThat’s rather odd. So, how do you like Oz so far?

JANEOh, it’s awesome! There’s no bad guys, or evil witches, and everyone is happy and the munchkins just dance and dance!

SCARECROWWell, I’ve been stuck up here for nearly 70 years, and I haven’t been able to get these crows to stop eating me!

JANEThat’s a shame.

(Immediately continues to only think about herself, so very energetic and excited voice will follow.)

You see, I want adventure. I’m off to the wizard of Oz so I can go home, but I am in no hurry at all. I want to have picnics in the flowers with butterflies, and meet all these magical creatures that live here! I am going to have the time of my life in Oz!

SCARECROWThat sounds like a very byzantine plan, dear!

JANEWould you like to come with me? You probably need a brain, huh.

SCARECROWHow dare you say I need a brain! I have a brain, a very large one in fact! I know words like scintillating, and cacophony, and ubiquitous. And how else would I know that in 1871, the declaration of proposed recreational settlements with Munchkin Land was signed with the Candy Cane empire regarding the domination of the far west Licorice Land?

JANEThat’s very impressive, wow.

SCARECROWHow would I know that the square root of 58750287 is 7664.87358017? How would I know that jaguars are great swimmers, and eat fish, turtles, deer, peccaries,

13

Page 14: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

capybaras, or caimans—small, alligator like animals. So actually Jane, I do have a brain.

JANEI’m sorry, it’s just that in the movie the scarecrow is supposed to be really stupid, and he wants a brain so badly that he goes along with Dorothy to get a brain from the wizard!

SCARECROWThere was a moving picture made about our world?

JANEYes! And there was a bad witch, and you were dumb, and my other friends were missing things too, like a heart, and courage.

SCARECROWOh. Well, that’s obviously fiction. Here there’s no evil, everyone is the best and nicest they can be!

JANESo, you’re smart, huh.

(Sounds sad.)So you won’t come along on an adventure with me, because you already have a brain, huh.

SCARECROWWell, I really should be getting back to my post; nobody wants these crows gobbling up the delicious corn I’ve been guarding.

JANEThat’s what I expected, but please Scarecrow, oh please! Oz won’t be the same without you!

SCARECROWJane, do you want the people of munchkin land to have crow-picked through corn?

JANE Oh…well, of course not, but um actually, on my way here the mayor said that…uh…they were hiring a new scarecrow, and they didn’t even remember you were here.

SCARECROWDidn’t even remember I was here? How…  how peculiar.

JANE

14

Page 15: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

I know, right? But yeah, when…uh… the mayor sent me here… he actually told me to make sure the crows were getting some corn. Apparently they were going to plant a fresh crop…to be watched over by their new scarecrow.

SCARECROWOh. Hard to believe they would replace me.

JANEThey probably had good intentions, wanted you to go on a bit of an adventure for a change.

SCARECROWAnd… you’re going on an adventure?

JANEYes, and it is just what you need; some exercise and new views.

SCARECROWI… guess I could leave here for a bit. I have watched over the corn for a very, very, very, very long time.

JANEThat’s good thinking! And what’s the worst that could happen? The crows eat all the corn?

SCARECROWYes, actually; that would be pretty bad.

(JANE stuffs the last of the straw into the scarecrow and they start walking.)

JANEOh, well…

SCARECROWSurely the new scarecrow will not see to that, though, right?

JANEOf course, yes. But the munchkins do have some backup food incase, right?

SCARECROWYes Jane, you have nothing to worry about.

(Chuckles)And I guess I do deserve a break from all that protecting of the corn.

JANEOkay, well now we’re off to the woods! We’re going to see the Tin Man and ooh maybe the Wicked Witch will try to catch us! But I’ll be ready for her, don’t worry.

15

Page 16: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

SCARECROWUnlikely she’ll be there, but all right then; sounds fun.

(Takes the straw Jane has collected and stuffs it into himself, then motions for Jane to lead him.)

After you.

(JANE goes in front of the scarecrow and they make their way down the yellow brick road, periodically picking up the straw that falls out.)

16

Page 17: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

SCENE 3(JANE enters an apple tree orchard with the SCARECROW. Apples are on the ground, and there is grass, tree stumps, a shed, and the continuing yellow brick road. The activity is first packing straw back into the Scarecrow as it keeps falling out. )

JANE (Sassy whiny voice)And then, right after I bowed to all my loyal fans, and blew kisses… Marcie ran up to the stage in her boring stepsister costume of rags, and bowed right in front of me!

SCARECROWUh, how dare she?

JANEI mean obviously I’m the best, why else would I get casted as Cinderella, in Cinderella! Marcie just got a step sister. All they have to do is be stupid and mean.

SCARECROWThat sounds like you two aren’t very fond of each other.

JANENo, but… it’s all her fault! Everything is, she’s just evil!

SCARECROWWell, there’s no evil here Jane, but maybe reflect on your arguments with Marcie, it takes two to argue.

JANEI mean, I know that, but she starts the fights. She just doesn’t like me. I’ve never done anything to her.

SCARECROWI wish I could help you more, Jane, but I don’t know much about the world outside of Oz.

JANEThat’s alright, I just really want to stop arguing with her, it’s so nice without any evil, like here in Oz.

SCARECROWThat is what I thought when the treaty was signed, except now…

JANENow what, Scarecrow?

17

Page 18: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

SCARECROWAhh, nothing, Jane, you enjoy Oz for yourself. Are you getting a bit hungry?

JANEYes, I am actually.

SCARECROWHere, let’s have some of these apples, they look very shiny and red.

(SCARECROW walks up and puts his hand on the apple tree’s apple. JANE and SCARECROW stop messing with his straw.)

JANEDon’t touch that apple! The trees will get very mad!

APPLE TREE (Grouchy and very deep voice)What do you want?

SCARECROWWell, my friend and I were walking, on the way to see the wizard actually, and our stomachs felt a little too light; I was wondering if you would spare a few of these delicious looking apples?

APPLE TREE (Laughs but it kind of sounds like a cough)

You want some of my apples?

JANEScarecrow, watch out! Duck!

(JANE ducks)

SCARECROWIt’s fine, Jane!

(APPLE TREES pick a couple of their own apples.)This is Frank here, he’s just recovering from a nasty cold.

 APPLE TREE

Scarecrow, you are a trust worthy man. Here are some apples. Hey, what is wrong with that girl over there?

(APPLE TREE hands apples to Scarecrow.)

SCARECROWOh, yes, that is Jane; she thought you would throw apples!

APPLE TREE

18

Page 19: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

Well now that’s just silly. That would make us bad people, and there’s no bad people in Oz. I admit with my cold I haven’t been as cheerful to the birds and squirrels that climb through my branches, but I will always share my food.

(JANE walks up.)

JANEIt’s just that… I mean the apple trees are bad guys, and they are trying to weaken us so the wicked witch can catch me!

SCARECROWJane, there’s no evil witches in this beautiful world of Oz! Now why don’t you pick up some of those apples from the ground to put in your basket for later.

(JANE picks up apples and puts them in her basket.)

JANESee that thing over there? That’s the Tin Man. He’s going to become our friend.

SCARECROWIn the forest? I would say that’s nothing more than a piece of shiny metal.

JANEI’ll bet you anything that it’s the Tin Man.

(JANE and SCARECROW walk over into the woods to see the metal thing.)

SCARECROWOh my, you were right! It seems to be a tin…man.

JANEWe need to oil it.

SCARECROWNo sir! It’s sleeping I think.

(JANE Pokes Tin Man and he snores then suddenly wakes up.)

TIN MANOh thank your gracious soul! I hope I didn’t sleep too long.

APPLE TREE (Yells from off stage)Only 68 years! I’ve thrown apples at it, but it never would even stir!

TIN MANI really am sorry, I hope I didn’t cause anyone any distress!

19

Page 20: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

APPLE TREE (off stage)No, you’re fine T man, it was very quiet!

JANEAnyways, Scarecrow here, and I, are making a journey off through Oz. We’re going to see all the magical creatures and wonderful places, it’s going to be so perfect! Here, let us oil you a bit.

(JANE and SCARECROW oil him.)JANE (continued)

So, you think you need a heart, huh? Oh it’ll be so fun with you coming along to Emerald City!

TIN MANA heart? I am so, so, sorry to disappoint you, uh…

SCARECROWJane.

TIN MANRight, Jane, I’m very sorry, but I have a perfect, red, beating heart right here!

(TIN MAN taps on his chest where his heart is.)Did you know I used to cry at operas? Did you know I used to have a girlfriend? Did you know it warms my heart when I see people helping animals?

SCARECROWSee Jane, I think he does very much have a heart.

JANE(Hands oiling can to Scarecrow)

So he’s not going to come to the wizard with us? (JANE turns to the Tin Man.)

Tin Man, we were going to have a picnic in the flowers, and help frog-birds fly and swim, and-

TIN MANI’m sorry, but I should really finish chopping the wood here, it’s getting darker by the second.

JANEYou have to be joking! I know you need a heart.

TIN MANNo siree! Once the treaty was signed with the mayor of Munchkin Village, the Wizard of Candy Cane forest, and the Wizard of Emerald City to ban the witch, I’ve had time for more self esteem; I know I have a heart!

20

Page 21: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

SCARECROWOk, that’s enough oil.

(SCARECROW stops oiling.)And Jane, stop telling the man he isn’t compassionate, I can see he very much is.

JANEBut this was supposed to be like the movie. This isn’t Oz. Scarecrow, you’re keeping me great company, but it won’t be the same without him.

TIN MANI’m sorry, I just can’t. I wish I could but I should get a fire going, it’s getting colder. It was very nice to meet you, Jane!

(TIN MAN holds out his hand to shake hers and they shake hands, Jane looking very sad.)

JANE (Sad/manipulative)I guess I’ll just have to travel Oz all alone, Oh, I’ll be so sad.

(JANE Spills apples from basket to ground.)And that’s just peachy. Now I’ve got no food for this long journey.

TIN MANWell, we don’t want that.

(TIN MAN, SCARECROW, and JANE pick up apples and put them back in the basket.)

JANEOther than Scarecrow, I’ll have to walk along these yellow bricks without any fun, or joy, or adventure.

TIN MANI’m sorry to hear that but…

JANENo one to save me if the evil witch captures Scarecrow here, and then heads for me.

TIN MANWell I don’t think-

JANEI was let free in a world I hardly know, and nobody wants to be friends with me.

(JANE fake cries.)

TIN MANAww, doll, come here.

(TIN MAN gives Jane a hug, and hands her the basket filled with apples.)

You have the mighty, all brains Scarecrow by your side, you’ll be fine.

21

Page 22: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

JANEYou call yourself compassionate?

SCARECROWJane!

TIN MAN (Sleepily)No, Fredrick, she…she….Jane, This adventure sounds nice…very nice. I… Do you think first I could just… all the feelings. Emotions. I…

(TIN MAN falls to ground in a sleep.)

SCARECROW (Puts hand on Jane’s shoulder and speaks earnestly.)

I think he didn’t want you to see that, Jane. Because the witch left and there’s no evil, the Tin Man was so filled with emotions and love that he couldn’t even stay conscious for long!

(JANE and SCARECROW start off down the yellow brick road)

JANEWell, Okay then. I guess I understand. Hey, watch out,

(JANE abruptly stops walking.)maybe the witch will still appear on top of this shed, and then she’ll take his heart, and then he’ll go along with us!

SCARECROWJane dear, we’ve established there are no bad guys in Oz! I’m sorry, But I don’t think the witch will be there.

(SCARECROW continues walking then stops again as JANE picks up an apple branch.)

JANEOkay, she’ll be here any second now.

(JANE holds attack position.)No wait, this can’t be right. She isn’t coming?

SCARECROWOh dear, you look so sad, Jane. I’m sorry Oz isn’t like it was in this “movie.”

JANE (JANE throws apples at the ground)

I did wish there was no evil in Oz, but…it’s just… kind of boring. I won’t let that stop me though, I’m going to have fun here; just you wait and see! I will have fun in Oz, even without the Tin Man!

SCARECROW (out of breath)(Hurrying behind Jane to pick up the tossed apples and hold them all.)

22

Page 23: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

That’s the spirit Jane! Now where to next?

JANEOff to the woods!

(JANE tosses the empty basket back to SCARECROW who puts the apples in it, and runs up to Jane. They then exit on the yellow brick road.)

SCENE 4(JANE, SCARECROW, and TIN MAN enter the dark forest eating apples. Scary noises are heard.)

JANEOh no! Do you hear those rapid winds that seem to be whistling through the trees?

SCARECROWI hear those sounds too, and they don’t sound like Beethoven’s lovely plucking of strings!

(The wind stops.)

JANEIn the movie the lion is very cowardly in the danger of the scary forest, and because it’s so scary, Dorothy skips along with the lion and scarecrow, and tin man!

SCARECROWOnce again, that movie sounds splendid Jane, although, here in Oz without evil it may be a tad different.

JANEDo you think the lion will still come running out of the forest and fail to scare us? In the movie he doesn’t have enough courage to be truly scary, and so he comes along to the wizard to get some bravery.

SCARECROWIs that the lion, Jane?

(JANE runs up to a tree stump and looks at a lion writing in the dirt.)

JANEI…guess so. Why hello! Why didn’t you come bursting out from the bushes and try to scare us?

LIONBecause why want to scare you?

23

Page 24: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

JANEWell I mean obviously you would fail because you don’t believe in yourself, but I-

LIONDon’t believe in myself? Oh I’m very confident and brave! I jumped off the highest high dive in the world, I sang a song for the president of Munchkin Land, and as a child I turned in my late homework to the school Master who always gave me that evil eye! I have a lot of courage, but why would I scare you lovely folk?

JANEBecause in the mov-

SCARECROWOh hey there lion.

LIONHello young man!

JANELion, you’ll still go with us to the wizard, right? We should leave pretty soon, it’s getting dark!

LIONWhat’s wrong with the dark of the forest? These woods are my home, where I sleep, eat, and breathe!

JANE Come on now, this lion is so boring. This adventure is obviously no fun anymore, it’s nothing like the mov-

SCARECROW(Whispers.)

Shh! Nobody else knows about the movie!

JANEOh!

(Lowers her voice.) Well then how do you, Scarecrow?

SCARECROWMy brain has a higher capacity than others. I’ve done my research in multimedia historical films.

JANERight then, well we need the lion to go along with us, we need him to!

(Turns to lion and restores voice to normal range.)

24

Page 25: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

Lion, won’t you come with us?

LIONI’m not really up for much of a hike at the moment, I just finished my daily rounds of running around and putting the fallen bird nests back in the trees.

JANEHow kind! Hey, if you come along I bet the Wizard will be so pleased with your stewardship he will grant you any wish!

LIONThat sounds nice, but the yellow brick road is so very long, and steep, and twisty…

JANEYes, but what if you wished for... A cake! And not just any cake, but a ten layer cake piled high with fudge and icing and sweets!

SCARECROWJane, if he doesn’t want to go with us, he doesn’t have to.

JANEPlease Lion, please, please, please, please!

LIONJane sweets, I don’t need any more bravery, and to be quite honest, every so often that I do happen to make my way to the Emerald City I get very lost.

JANEWe’ll be your guides! What if the Wizard offers you a lifetime of guaranteed wishes? Hmm? No, not good enough? Then you’ll have to counter his offer!

LIONJane, you seem so disappointed, and it hurts me to have to do this, but I just can’t go along.

JANEThis is so unfair! I thought you were supposed to be a good guy.

LIONI am, and I would love to come along but I have to help relocate some chipmunks in a few minutes.

SCARECROWJane, maybe we should leave it at that.

(Puts hand on her shoulder.)

JANE

25

Page 26: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

Well you knows what, fine! Fine, you probably wouldn’t be any fun anyways! All courageous and not scared. If you came along it would be nothing like the movie!

LIONNothing like the wha-

JANECome on Scarecrow, let’s go!

(Pulls him away and they continue walking.)

SCARECROWAlright Jane, but…don’t you think you might have been a little harsh on the lion? It really wasn’t his fault he doesn’t need bravery, it’s the Witch’s.

JANEYeah, I feel kind of bad now; but it’s just not fair! None of it is! I wish the Wicked Witch was here, and everything was normal! She wasn’t even on top of the log cabin!

SCARECROWI’m so sorry, Jane.

JANEMaybe there are still some evil monkeys, this is about where they capture Dorothy I think.

SCARECROWJane, dear, I don’t think there are going to be any evil monkeys around here anytime…soon…

(Turns head to monkey and slows speech.)Never mind.

JANE(Runs up to monkey.)

Yay! Finally! Some evil has arrived! Take me, evil Monkey, take me away!

MONKEYTake you away?

JANEYes! I give you full permission! Spread your wings and fly through the purple sky! Bring me to the Wicked Witch for all I care, I need some excitement!

MONKEYWicked Witch?

SCARECROWJane, I don’t think this monkey is evil.

26

Page 27: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

JANENot evil? What other kinds of monkeys are there in Oz? Here, let’s have an apple fight!

(Starts throwing apples at monkey.)Charge!

MONKEYAhh! No!

(Tries to shield himself with arms.)

SCARECROWJane, Stop! Don’t throw apples at the poor monkey!

JANEBut I’m retaliating against the forces of evil! Don’t worry though, he’ll probably win the fight, and take me to the Witch.

SCARECROWBut Jane, this monkey isn’t evil. He doesn’t even have any wings, look.

(Points to monkey.)

MONKEYMy-my-my name is Wilson. My friends call me Will. I-I don’t know what you mean…all this evil talk.

SCARECROWSeriously, you might want to stop before you’re taken to Candy Cane court. I hear the judge isn’t very sweet.

JANEAlright then.

(Stops throwing apples and sounds sad.)

MONKEYI really am sorry, but I’m just a monkey eating a banana.

SCARECROWNo, no, no, we are the ones that are sorry, Mr. Monkey, sir. You have our full apologies.

(Whispers to Jane and nudges her.)Jane, anything you might want to say?

JANE(Mumbles.)

Sorry.

SCARECROW

27

Page 28: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

Well, that’s that. Jane, why don’t you pick up those apples and put them back in your basket. It’s a shame you keep throwing them, they’re getting quite bruised.

JANEUgh, I don’t even know what to say, Oz is just nothing at all like I thought it would be.

SCARECROWWell, goodbye Wilson. Sorry again about the apples.

MONKEYIt’s okay. It was actually the most exciting thing to happen all week.

(MONKEY exits while Jane and Scarecrow slowly continue walking on the yellow brick road.)

SCARECROWSo Jane, off to The Wizard now? Have you given up on having fun?

JANEYes. And pretty much, yeah. I guess I get it now. No evil in Oz. You were right. I’m sorry, Scarecrow, I think I’ve been kind of rude.

SCARECROWOh, that’s alright, Jane, you were just disappointed, at every turn here in Oz. I feel sorry for you.

JANEThanks Scarecrow, but… is this who I really am? Am I the one that’s mean to Marcie?

SCARECROWNo, no, Jane. She is definitely horribly nasty to you. But it is just spectacular that you realize the imperfections in yourself. It’s the first step to becoming a better person, no matter how good of a person you are already. Nobody is perfect.

JANEThank you, Scarecrow. You always seem to know just what to say. You’re like my best friend. In fact, you kind of remind me of my best-

SCARECROW(Glances at wrist)

Oh my, look at the time! We better hurry if you want to get to the Wizard.

JANEYeah, I guess we should go.

(JANE and SCARECROW exit on the yellow brick road looking solemn.)

28

Page 29: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

SCENE 5(JANE and SCARECROW enter, walking up to the Emerald Palace in the Emerald City, picking flowers off of their clothes.)

JANEScarecrow, that was so boring.

SCARECROWThat is true. But hey, I’m not that happy either, did you know I’m allergic to Poppies?

(Sneezes)

JANEAww, poor buddy I’m sorry to hear that.

SCARECROWJane, you are such a nice and compassionate person, even more so then when I first met you. It’s a shame you had no fun in Oz.

JANEWell thank you, and yes it is so unfair. I mean, I thought no evil would be the way to go, but there was no excitement without the Wicked Witch!

SCARECROWI felt so sad for you when the Tin Man and Lion didn’t go along with us.

JANEI know; it was really disappointing.

SCARECROWSo, excited to get back to your regular life? Or don’t you want Marcie stealing your thunder?

JANEIt will be a relief to have some normality aside from these Oz creatures, but I’ve decided I’m going to let her have some of the attention, I mean she’s not all that bad.

SCARECROWWow, my little Jane sure is becoming a smart young lady!

JANEWell thank you, Scarecrow, but here in Oz without any evil I have started to understand the parallel between real life and stories. In real life there can be a little conflict, but not enough that it hurts people. In stories or movies there can be bad guys because that’s what makes a good story. I knew the Wicked Witch would never actually harm me, but without her, Oz wasn’t the same.

SCARECROW

29

Page 30: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

I’m so very glad you have learned so much here!

JANEYeah! You know, Scarecrow, you’re my favorite. Thanks for seeing that I get home now.

SCARECROWSure, Jane. I am glad I got to have a small adventure today; it was quite enjoyable.

JANEI am glad you thought so, Scarecrow. So…If I may ask, and, you may know the answer because, well…that large brain of yours…well why isn’t there a witch?

SCARECROWJane… I think you’re worthy enough to keep a secret.

JANEA secret!

SCARECROWYes Jane, but you must never tell! You see, one time a long, long while back…this girl dressed much like you visited our land. No other creatures remember this, but my memory is exceptional. She said her name was Dorothy, and she came on an adventure with us, just like you are. Those times were different, and we were different people. I thought I had no knowledge, Tin Man thought he didn’t have a heart, and well you seem to know the rest from this “movie”. You could see how it would be fun for little Dorothy, and I’m sorry we are more confident in ourselves, and that you don’t get the same experience. But anyways, the secret; as Dorothy’s adventure came to an end, she killed the witch with water, as you also probably know from this knowledgeable movie. The witch has never been seen again, and that’s when everyone in Oz took an oath to never show bad attitude, or as you call it, “be a bad guy”. Even though it may be less fun, Oz is a better world now without the Wicked Witch.

JANEWow. So she never came back?

SCARECROWYes, but like I said it’s all for the best. Bad guys are essential to stories, but Jane, Oz is my life.

JANEI never thought about it like that. I guess Oz could do without the Witch, but why couldn’t the Tin Man, Apple Trees, and Lion be their normal selves?

SCARECROW

30

Page 31: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

I’m assuming by normal you mean like in the movie. And in that sense it all comes back down to psychology and the witch. No more evil threats, no reason for them to feel like they're empty of certain attributes.

JANEOh, that makes sense.

SCARECROWYes, it does all come together? Now are you sure you are ready to go all the way back home to California?

JANEI am getting quite homesick, but do you think I’ll ever see you again?

SCARECROWI… wouldn’t doubt it.

(JANE turns attention to where they have arrived.)

JANEFinally! We’re finally here to see the Wizard! It'll be a little different than what Dorothy expected, but since everyone’s so nice, he’ll have to lend me his hot air balloon!

SCARECROWAhh yes, I remember the wizard wasn't all powerful as he advertised, but yes, let's hope he is as gracious!

(SCARECROW knocks on door and it creaks open.)

JANEMaybe the wizard was expecting someone?

SCARECROWI doubt so, that’s kind of odd the door just opened on it’s own.

(JANE and SCARECROW walk forward, and past the doors to where the wizard would be. Then they pull open the curtain. The Wicked Witch is there.)

JANEI thought there were no bad guys!

SCARECROWHmm, not since The Witch died.

JANEBut…but she-she’s here!

31

Page 32: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

(Gestures to the witch.)

WICKED WITCHOh my pretties! Don’t you understand? I never died. My magic is strong, and I could never be defeated! Who is this now? Dorothy? I thought you’d left Oz!

(Takes seat at table with crystal ball.)

SCARECROWThis is Jane, she just came to Oz, and now she needs to be getting home.

(SCARECROW and JANE take seats opposite the Wicked Witch.)

WICKED WITCHHow? Dorothy took those magic slippers, so you’re kind of trapped.

SCARECROWJane was actually expecting the wizard to help out with that.

JANEI was planning on flying home on the Wizards hot air balloon actually. Does he have any more here? …Where is he by the way?

WICKED WITCHSorry, I sent the wizard home in his last balloon.

JANEWhat? No.

WICKED WITCHOf course there’s always another way.

SCARECROWLike what?

WICKED WITCHWell, of course I have some spare magic to create more hot air balloons!

JANEWow! That would be awesome, thanks!

WICKED WITCHNot so fast, I can help you yet I didn't say I would. Let's say we made a deal, are you in to help me out a little?

JANEWell, I guess…if it’s not anything evil.

32

Page 33: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

WICKED WITCHOh of course not! It’s just a mere necklace I want back from my dear old friend Glinda.

SCARECROWSounds like you’ve changed.

WICKED WITCHLet’s just say with my vacation I’ve had some time to think on things, you know…create some plans for the future.

JANESo about the necklace?

WICKED WITCHOh uh, yeah…that. Here’s a spell, say it once when you reach Glinda, and the necklace will come off her and return to it’s rightful possession.

JANEAlright, thank you so much for helping me to get home!

(WICKED WITCH hands Jane a piece of paper with writing on it, then JANE and SCARECROW stand up and exit, the WICKED WITCH smiling, and tapping her fingers deviously.)

33

Page 34: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

SCENE 6(JANE and SCARECROW walk on the yellow brick road to Glinda’s castle while Jane looks over the spell on the paper.)

JANESo, how do you think Glinda got the necklace from the Wicked Witch?

SCARECROWWell, maybe she borrowed it and simply never gave it back those two aren't…let's say, very fond of each other.

JANEI bet it's pretty, maybe pearls?

SCARECROWYeah? I bet it has evil written all over it. This is a bad idea Jane, we shouldn't do this to Glinda, it isn’t nice.

JANEIt's fine, Scarecrow! It's The Wicked Witch's necklace, she just wants it back, that's all.

SCARECROWWell...okay. I trust you Jane. Something seems suspicious, that's all.

(They reach the doors to a shiny bubble castle and knock.)

JANEAnyone here? Glinda?

GLINDA(From side of house.)

Hello doll. Over here in the garden!

(JANE and SCARECROW walk to the side where Glinda is and she stands up.)

SCARECROWWell you look just fine on this lovely day, Linny! Jane here has something she wants to say to you.

JANE(Turns to Glinda, looks up begins reciting spell.)

Letitoax meanocious greaneniocious. And ta-da! (Nothing dramatic happens and JANE and SCARECROW look confused.)

34

Page 35: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

SCARECROWWe're sorry, Glinda, but we just wanted the necklace you had borrowed from the Witch and this is the spell the wicked witch gave us to get that necklace back to her, and-

(JANE runs off stage.)Jane, where are you going?

JANE (offstage)The wind blew the paper with the spell, and I don't want to lose it for The Wicked Witch.

(JANE comes back on stage with green skins do looks at hand.)Anyways, I-

(GLINDA, SCARECROW, and JANE scream.)AHHHH!!! I’M GREEN!!!

SCARECROWJane, you're green!!!!!

GLINDA She's green!!!! I bet the Wicked Witch had something to do with this!

SCARECROWI told you, Jane, you should have never trusted her!

JANEOh, I know, Scarecrow. Why did I? At least now I have learned never to trust bad guys, even though you want them in a story because they make it interesting. Hah, well at least there was some excitement today!

SCARECROWYes, but Jane, you are still green. How should we go about fixing this now?

JANEI was hoping you could tell me, mister brains!

(Scarecrow chuckles.)

GLINDACare to take a bath of bubbles? I have plenty!

JANEI’m not quite sure that would work. Argh, I still can’t believe the witch tricked me! This spell never had anything to do with a necklace, did it?

35

Page 36: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

SCARECROWI figure not, Jane my dear. Now, why don’t we stop dwelling on this disturbance, and go back to see the Witch?

(Holds out hand to shake with Glinda.)Goodbye Glinda, have a fair day!

(SCARECROW and JANE start to head away but suddenly the witch walks up.)

WICKED WITCHSo, I see you found out what my spell really does.

JANEYes, we figured out that you’re a selfish, evil, arrogant-

SCARECROWOkay, okay. So, Why ever on Earth would you make Jane green?

GLINDA(Walks up to the Wicked Witch.)

That spell, I remember it from my schooling days. It replaces one’s skin color with another’s. See, how the Witch is not green anymore. But I too must question your motives.

WICKED WITCHWell, first why don’t you all relax? It’s quite too tense in here.

(Sits down at a picnic table and begins eating a sandwich.)

JANEIn my world, nobody has green skin! I won’t even be thought of as human when I get back, I’ll be an anomaly!

WICKED WITCHJane dear, who ever said you were getting home?

(Takes big bite of food and chews nonchalantly.)

JANEYou did. You said if I said the spell, which I did, and-

WICKED WITCH(Silences Jane with her hand motions, swallows her food, and begins to talk.)

Have a seat, my pretty. You and your two friends here look mighty worn out.

36

Page 37: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

(JANE, SCARECROW, AND GLINDA sit down across from the Wicked Witch.)

WICKED WITCH (continued)Now, Jane, I am very sorry, but you my dear have been tricked! As you have gathered, I replaced your skin with mine so I can carry out a number of evil related activities, including my plans to take over the world!

SCARECROWYou sure have some large ambitions.

GLINDANow why don’t you send sweet Jane here home? I don't see what it could hurt.

SCARECROWShe just wanted to have a little fun here in Oz, but because of the treaty, which was your fault, she couldn’t enjoy herself! Also now that you’re here and have resorted to high levels of evil, like stealing her skin, I can’t imagine how non-enjoyable this must be for her!

JANEGuys, guys, thank you for sticking up for me, but it’s okay, this was fun! I know when I get back home everything will be back to normal!

WICKED WITCHSee, Dorothy here doesn’t have a problem with me!

SCARECROWThis is Jane, actually.

WICKED WITCHDoesn’t matter, all children look the same to me!

(Finishes last bite of sandwich and stands up to leave.)Well, I better be getting home now! Goodby-

GLINDANot so fast, you need to help Jane get home.

SCARECROWYeah, you said you would help.

WICKED WITCHOnce again may I remind you all that I lie. A LOT. Sorry.

(SCARECROW and GLINDA stand up and pull the Wicked Witch back down in her seat.)

37

Page 38: citytheatrecompany.orgcitytheatrecompany.org/.../uploads/...Got-a-Brain.docx  · Web viewYou know! In the “Wizard of Oz” there’s two wicked witches; one that Dorothy kills

SCARECROWWe need to be getting Jane home now, it is getting very late.

GLINDAI must say, even I have no clue how, without the Witch’s help. She has stronger powers than me, I have to admit.

SCARECROWOh, I think I can help Jane. Thank you so much, Glinda, for all your help, but I think it's time Jane and I had our last moment together.

(Nods to Glinda as she gets up to leave.)

GLINDAOf course, Scarecrow. Have a lovely day, and Jane, I do hope you get home alright.

(JANE and SCARECROW wave to Glinda as she stands up and leaves the scene.)

SCARECROWAnd now, for all this evil-

(Turns head to Wicked Witch and raises eyebrow.)We must also bid goodbye. Better to get Jane home on good terms than with this dark magic and evil-ness. Heaven knows how hard it's going to be for me to get you removed again, Witch!

WICKED WITCHFine by me, but don't come crying and knocking on my wooden door when this little pretty can't run back home.

(WICKED WITCH standsa up and starts walking away, head high in the air.)

JANEHave a wonderful day! And have fun completing your evil plans!

(Whispering following sentence to Scarecrow.)The evil plans you'll be stopping!

(JANE and SCARECROW laugh to each other.)

SCARECROWHah! That's absolutely correct, Jane. Well, now that those two are gone, I guess it really is about time to say goodbye.

JANENo! I'll miss you so much!

(Gives SCARECROW a hug.)

SCARECROWAs will I. I am glad I could accompany you throughout Oz, I hope back at your home you'll have more fun in this play you are doing than in actual Oz.

JANEThank you, I actually may now that I've learned more about Marcie. But I have to ask, what are your plans to get me home?

SCARECROWOz is a very magical land, as you may have learned, so it won't take much effort. Simply close your eyes and think about home and how much you wish to be there.

(JANE closes her eyes.)Think about simpler times, like eating lunch and laughing with your friends.

JANEOr hanging out in the theatre eating pizza after a show, laughing about how bad we thought we did!

SCARECROWThere's the idea, Jane! Now repeat after me: I wish to be home. I wish to be home. I wish to be home.

JANEI wish to be home. I wish to be home. I wish to be home.

(Scene blacks out with Jane still having her eyes closed.)

SCENE 7(JANE and MARCIE are in hospital beds in the hospital and Marcie is sipping water and flipping through tv channels with her remote.)

JANE(Groggy)(Slowly turns head to see Marcie.)

Marcie...I'm back in California?

MARCIEJane! Oh my gosh you're awake! I thought I'd have to take over your part as Dorothy, but-

JANEWhat happened? Why are we in a hospital?

MARCIEThere was an earthquake! Don't worry though, you were only out for a couple of hours, and there were only a few others injured.

JANEWhat? But-

MARCIEOh, and Jane, I almost forgot. I really do owe you an apology. I guess I've been a little rough on you, huh.

(Looks embarrassed.)

JANEThat's one way to put it. But how on earth did you come to this realization?

MARCIEWell, I had this dream- although it felt so real I swear I was actually there- of Oz! I was actually in Oz! It was really fun, and I was The Witch and everything! But…then it got kind of boring and lonely, you see, for some reason Dorothy never came. During rehearsals I would always hope you would be sick, or not show up so I didn't have to see Dorothy's smug little face, but now I realize she's needed for the story.

JANEYou were in Oz? Oh my gosh, I dreamt I was too! And you're right, it all felt so real!

MARCIEWas your Oz like in the movie?

JANE(Laughs.)

Hardly! In my dream at first there was no Wicked Witch, and no evil, but like you realized; it was so boring! The apple trees wouldn't even throw apples, and the Tin Man and Lion wouldn't even go along on my adventure with me!

MARCIEWhy that's horrible!

JANEI know, right! I've learned so very much, maybe the most being that I need to just put up with the witch in our play!

MARCIEI too have learned a lot, and now I understand I should put up with Dorothy in our play! Jane?

JANEYes?

MARCIEYou know what might make this all easier?

JANEI may have an idea.

(Smiles.)

MARCIEWhy don't we be friends?

JANEThat sound splendid! Rehearsal will be so much more fun now!

(JANE and MARCIE’s hospital beds are close enough that they can hug and they smile as they are both happy with their new friends.)

MARCIEI really am sorry for when I was so mean to you Jane, there was no call for it.

JANEOh, I understand, Marcie. No need to keep apologizing. I've also learned a bit about myself, and well… I guess I was kind of arrogant and self entitled!

MARCIEWell, maybe a little!

(JANE and MARCIE both laugh again.)

JANENow, why don't you tell me more about your Oz? Oh, we're there lollipop trees? In my Oz there were lollipop trees and this little stream with pretty fish in it-

MARCIEDid you see the flying monkeys? Oh they loved me and they were soft to pet, like cats!

JANEYes, I saw one! Funny story-

(The lights dim and music starts to play as the scene ends with JANE and MARCIE still at the edge of their beds talking excitedly about their encounters in Oz.)

The End.
