You are visiting the University at an exciting time. Between 2012 and 2016, we will be investing up to £165 million in our estate and infrastructure. For our current and future students, this investment will lead to a state-of-the-art sports centre (opening later this year), expanded online and print resources in our libraries, new spaces for studying and Information Technology resources to enrich life and learning.

City’s Open Day is a great opportunity for you to learn about courses that interest you, take a tour of our facilities and experience a glimpse of life as a City student. This guide will help you plan your day. Over the page, you will find some tips on making the most of your visit. The talks planner on pages 6 and 7 provides an overview of all of the day’s activity, while pages 10 to 19 contain more information on academic life at City, with details of course-specific talks run by City’s five Schools. At the back of the guide, you will find maps of our campus.

Throughout this guide the University’s buildings are colour coded to help you get around and on the day, staff and student ambassadors will be on hand to help, chat about life at City and answer your questions.

Planning your day at CityCity’s Open Day is held at the University’s main campus, around Northampton Square. The talks planner on pages 6 and 7 and the maps at the back of this guide will help you organise your visit to City.

Travel information

City is located in central London and it has excellent transport links. Our nearest London Underground stations are Angel (Northern Line) and Farringdon (Circle Line; Hammersmith & City Lines; National Rail Services), both of which can be accessed from London Kings Cross Station and are approximately ten minutes’ walk from Northampton Square.

There are several bus routes which run by Northampton Square, including the following: 4, 19, 30, 38, 43, 55, 56, 73, 153, 205, 214, 243, 274, 341, 394, 476.

For further information on public transport in London, please visit www.tfl.gov.uk.Parking in central London is expensive and we recommend using public transport where possible. However, if you do

plan to arrive at City by car, please visit www.ncp.co.uk to find details of convenient car parks. City is unable to provide visitor parking on campus.

At the back of this guide you will find a map of our campus and the local area.

Arrival

When you arrive at City, please go to the main entrance of the University Building (B) to register: make sure you bring along your confirmation email with your bar code for fast-track registration.

There are Open Day helpdesks on the main walkway in the University Building (B) and on the first floor in the College Building (A). Staff and student ambassadors will be at these helpdesks, ready to help you plan your day, register for tours and find your way around.

Rooms A216 and A305 in the College Building (A) are available for for prayer and quiet reflection during the day. Please ask at the Open Day helpdesk on the main walkway in the University Building (B) for more information.

Our friendly student ambassadors will be at the nearest train stations and situated around campus throughout the day: they can help you find your way and show you around the University on one of our tours.

Making the most of your visit

or with parents or friends: if you get lost, a Student Ambassador will always be close at hand to help. Try to allow time to explore our neighbourhood as well: close to Angel you will find plenty of shops and cafes, while cultural activity and restaurants dominate around Farringdon and Barbican.

Ask questions

Student ambassadors will be around campus throughout the day to help answer your questions. As current students, they have first-hand experience of living and studying in London, and can help you find your way around. Staff including admissions tutors, Student Centre advisors and academics will also be on hand and happy to chat.

Refuel

It can be tempting to pack as much as possible into your visit, but don’t forget to stop for lunch during the day. All of the catering outlets on campus are open for Open Days and there is free tea and coffee in the refectory, located in the University Building (B). If you would prefer to venture off campus, Exmouth Market, close to the College Building (A), is one of London’s foremost streets for restaurants and cafes.

Life beyond the lecture hall

There is a range of places to eat and meet friends at the University, including coffee shops, sandwich bars and the student refectory. Find some time to explore the University’s social areas to relax between talks and tours. Unfortunately, the Students’ Union social venue, Saddlers Bar, is closed for refurbishment.

Plan

Open Days are always very busy: at any point in the day, there are several talks taking place and tours departing. It is helpful to identify your “can’t miss” events. Among these will usually be any talk that relates to the subject or subjects you are interested in studying. General talks on admissions, student finance and accommodation are also really helpful as you plan for life at university. Finally, the Welcome to City talk led by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Curran, at 10am and 12:30pm, provides an excellent overview of everything City has to offer. Note down times and locations on pages 6 and 7.

Explore

Campus tours, which run throughout the day, are a great way to get your bearings. But it can also be really helpful to wander around campus yourself

When planning your day, make sure to allow some time for getting to know City’s buildings and facilities. A campus tour, run by a Student Ambassador, is an excellent place to start. Many of our departments also run tours of their own facilities: details of these additional tours are available on the pages that follow.

A member of the Learning Success team, which looks after disability, dyslexia and academic learning support matters, will also be available. Finally, the Student Centre can provide guidance for parents and international students.

Please take the time to visit the Centre during your visit. There will also be relevant literature available on their stand in the main walkway.

AdmissionsMembers of our admissions team will be available throughout the day in the Student Centre, located in the University Building (B), to talk about your application to City. Feel free to drop in for a discussion about your qualifications, writing personal statements, or, any aspect of your application, or attend one of the Admissions talks taking place at 11am or 1.30pm in the Great Hall, College Building (A).

Careers, Student Development & OutreachThe Careers, Student Development & Outreach team offers guidance to City students from day one of their course. The Service also provides advice for pre-entry students offered a place to study at the University. The Careers, Student Development & Outreach team is located in the Drysdale Building (E).

Alongside information about career planning, you can find out more about opportunities for volunteering, mentoring and work as a Student Ambassador. You will also be able to meet some of our employer partners to find out how they work with the University to recruit City graduates and our Careers Consultants will be offering short one to one guidance

meetings to give you a flavour for the career planning process. Students’ UnionThe Students’ Union exists to make sure you have a great time at university, both socially and academically. It represents students within the University, organises events and supports clubs and societies.

You can find out more about the Students’ Union at the Student Life and Sport talk at 11:30 and 1:30pm in AG08.

Sport & Leisure ServiceCitySport, City’s new sports facility located on Goswell Road is scheduled to open this autumn. With over 3000m² of floor space, CitySport will provide outstanding facilities and equipment for students, staff and the local community. You can view an area of our new sports facility on the campus tour, and to find out more about opportunities to participate in sport at City, speak to one of our current students who will be dressed in their City kit, or, attend the Student Life and Sport talk at 11.30am and 1:30pm in AG08, College Building (A).

LibraryThe University Library is located over five floors of the University Building (B). Library staff will be available during the day to answer your questions and show you the state-of-the-art facilities.

Library Services offer a huge range of resources to support your studies at City. Our printed collections are complemented by a vast portfolio of electronic resources (e-books, e-journals and specialist databases). Opening hours are extensive, including 24/7 around exam times, and help is available from our specialist staff in person and online.

Campus and accommodation tours

Campus tours are led by student ambassadors and take up to 45 minutes. You will visit the Student Centre,the Careers, Student Development & Outreach area and the Library. At many of these locations, staff will be on hand to provide more information and answer your questions.

To book a place on a campus tour, visit the Open Day helpdesk on the main walkway in the University Building (B). Tours run every ten minutes between 10am and 2.30pm and they depart from outside Waterstone’s, next to the main entrance of the University Building (B).

Our separate accommodation tours will leave from outside the Students’ Union, next to the main entrance of the University Building (B). These tours will include a visit to Liberty Court, one of the University’s undergraduate halls-of-residence. Liberty Court is located in the historical Smithfield area of London, around ten minutes walk from Northampton Square.

Student life and support for students

Though you will visit many of the departments responsible for student support as part of your campus tour, you may wish to find out more aboutthe services we provide. The following departments will have staff and current students available between 10am and 3pm to answer your questions.

City’s tradition of providing high quality education relevant to business and the professions dates back 160 years. For many of our graduates, time spent at City laid the groundwork for careers that have changed the world we live in.

1852

The Inns of Court School of Law was founded. One of the earliest providers of legal education in London, it would become a part of The City Law School in 2001.

1876

Herbert Henry Asquith, British Prime Minister from 1908 to 1916, graduated from The Inns of Court School of Law. Asquith was the first of many global leaders including Mohandas ‘Mahatma’ Gandhi, Clement Attlee, Jawaharlal Nehru, Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair, to pass through what is now The City Law School.

1877

St Bartholomew’s College of Nursing was founded, affiliated with London’s oldest hospital, St Bartholomew’s. The College of Nursing would later be incorporated into the School of Health Sciences at City University London.

1894

The Northampton Institute was founded. With the objective of promoting ‘the industrial skill, general knowledge, health and well-being of young men and women belonging to the poorer classes’, the first departments


established in the Institute were Mechanical Engineering and Metal Trades, Artistic Crafts for Industry, Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering, Horology, Electro-chemistry and Domestic Economy.

1908

The University Great Hall played host to the boxing competition of the first London Olympic Games. Great Britain excelled in the competition, winning 14 of 15 medals awarded.

1909

The Northampton Institute introduced courses in Aeronautical Engineering, the first offered in the United Kingdom. In this year the Institute also presented its first candidates for University of London BSc degrees.

1914-1918

During the First World War, the engineering facilities of the Northampton Institute were used to produce munitions and telegraph sets and members of academic staff helped to train munitions workers and service personnel. All departments also participated in schemes to retrain and find employment for wounded ex-servicemen.

1927

With the founding of the Department of Optometry and Visual Sciences, the Northampton Institute became one of the first establishments in the world to educate optometrists. City University London remains the only institution in London to offer a BSc in Optometry.

1939-1945

The Northampton Institute once again played a key part in the war effort, providing training courses for members of the RAF, Army and Navy in skills ranging from optics manufacturing to wireless mechanics. The University buildings suffered bomb damage, notably the Great Hall. Post-war reconstruction work would be completed in 1953.

1946

The Institute began a period of expansion that would set the stage for its transition into City University London in 1966. Between 1946 and 1956 the number of courses grew, student numbers increased and academic research became more important.

1955

The Northampton Institute offered a summer school on the use of electronic digital computers and calculators in accountancy, costing and management, laying the groundwork for the foundation of the British Computer Society.

1957

The Northampton Institute became the Northampton College of Advanced Technology, with a mandate to increase student numbers and offer advanced degrees whilst retaining the former Institute’s close links with industry.

1963

The Northampton College began to construct its first hall of residence, close to the City of London.

1966

The University was created by Royal Charter. Dr James Tait was appointed as its first Vice-Chancellor and Oliver Thompson its first Pro-Chancellor. Together they approached the Lord Mayor of London and they established a unique association between the City and University that continues today, in which the Lord Mayor in office is also the Chancellor of City University London.

1969

The Drysdale and Centenary Buildings were completed. The University Building would be opened a year later and the Tait Building in 1974.

1971

The astronauts of Apollo 15 visited City University London and presented Vice-Chancellor Tait with a piece of heat shield from the Apollo 15 command module.

1975

The first students of City University London’s new degree in Music began their studies. These students benefitted from the close links between the University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

1976

City offered a Diploma in Journalism, capitalising on its proximity to Fleet Street and its long experience of educating for the professions.

1977

The Centre for Legal Studies was established and the Graduate Diploma in Law was offered for the first time.

1988

The School of Engineering was formed under the guidance of Professor Ludwig Finkelstein, its first Dean.

1990

The School of Informatics was formed, bringing together the departments of Information Science, Business Computing and Computer Science Undergraduate degrees in Law were offered for the first time.

1995

St Bartholomew’s School of Nursing and Midwifery was incorporated into the University; it would become part of the School of Health Sciences . In the same year, the Charterhouse College of Radiography was also incorporated into the University.

2001

Following a generous donation from the Sir John Cass Foundation towards the Business School’s new building project, the School was renamed the Sir John Cass Business School. The Foundation, one of London’s oldest and largest education charities, continues to support the Cass Business School. Her Majesty the Queen opened the new building two years later.

The Inns of Court School of Law was integrated into The City Law School.

2003

The School of Arts was formed, bringing together the departments of Music, Journalism and Publishing and Cultural Policy and Management.

2004

The Social Sciences Building was opened.

2010

City University London was ranked in the top five percent of universities in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and in the top 30 higher education institutions in the UK by the Times Higher Education Table of Tables.
