months to 5 years old. (Ofsted registered for children up to the age of 8 in
holiday times.)
How does the Early Years setting know if children need extra help, and what
should parents/carers do if they think the child may have special educational
needs?
At Ymca City Tots Nursery we feel that parents are the best source of information.
When a child first starts nursery parents are asked to fill in information in their child’s Learning
Journey in the section of ‘All about me.’ This information will help staff to put in place any support
required by the child prior to staring nursery.
A risk assessment will also be carried out to see if there are any reasonable adjustments the nursery
has to make, or any additional training requirements required to support their time in the setting
that is reasonably practicable.
City Tots uses a Key Person approach where each child is allocated a Key Person during their time in
each room upon entry to the setting. The Key person enables a close, secure adult–child
relationship, which is critical for early development. In addition, the key person can consider the
needs of the child when planning and setting the curriculum and individual goals for the child. The
key person maintains links with the child's home setting, working with parents through shared
record keeping, to ensure that all children are supported in reaching their full potential.
The Key Person role also involves keeping records of key children’s developmental progress,
contributing observations to records kept by colleagues, observing their key children and analysing
the information gathered through observation, sharing records with parents and writing individual
education plans for key children with special educational needs.
The key Person uses various assessment tools including the two year old check (Single assessment),
ECAT and the EYFS. These tools help the Key person to identify any areas of development where the
child may need support.
The staff use Baseline’s for development so gaps can be easily identifies. One a term every staff
member will produce up to date assessments so management can monitor any areas of concern.
If parents do have concerns regarding their child’s development or a member of staff have raised
concerns then the SENCO and Management is notified and a meeting will be arranged with the
parents, SENCO and Key Person to discuss the child’s needs.
How Will Early Years Setting Support My Child?
The SENCO, Key Person and Nursery manager will liaise closely with parents and outside
professionals with support from the manager to create a realistic plan to support the child’s
development. Any assessment or reports made by agencies are shared with the Key Person and
SENCO and are incorporated in any target setting or support plans. Targets are set on a weekly basis
relating to the needs of the child then assessed and reviewed by the Key Person, SENCO and parents.
If a child does not make progress then a review of the targets set will be re-evaluated by the
professional involved with the child.
How will the curriculum be matched to my child’s needs.
Each Key Person carries out regular observations of children
Activities are planned each week and these are adapted to meet the needs of the individual child.
An Individual Assessment Plan sets targets which have been specifically designed for the individual
child.
Each child as an individual ‘learning Journey’, which is a working documents carried with through
transition from room to room and onto school as they grow.
Each child is given the opportunity to access planned activities but they may be adapted
appropriately for their age range.
How will you and l know how my child is doing and how will you help me to
support my child’s learning?
Dailey feedback will be given to parents and meetings will be arranged to discuss their child’s
progress. Children’s Learning journeys are available to view at any time and parents are able to
arrange times to discuss these with the Key Person.
Parent’s involvement in their child’s learning is integral therefore the Keyperson or SENCO will offer
guidance or suggestions to parents about their child’s learning at home.
Parent consultation weeks take place termly where parents have the opportunity to speak on a one
to one basis with their Key Person to discuss any concerns and developmental levels.
What will be there be for my child’s overall wellbeing?
Our Starter packs, induction form and our ‘All about me’ child forms provide us with information
which helps to create an overall picture of the child about their likes dislikes as well as any
information on medical needs or existing SEN Needs.
We ask parents to contribute to the child’s Learning Journey about special events or achievements
at home so the Key Person can build on the child’s learning which helps to strengthen home
relations.
All of our Nursery Team are Paediatric first aid trained and are trained in Child Protection and
Safeguarding
We ensure the selection of activities we provide support children to develop and to encourage
independence and celebrate difference. Trying to follow their interests where ever possible.
Medication is recorded and administered in accordance with our medication policy.
Accidents and incidents are recorded in accordance with our policy.
Policies are read through upon induction with the parents/carers.
What Specialist Services and Expertise are available at or accessed by the
setting?
If a child requires support from outside services, parents will be consulted by the Key person or
Manager before an external agency is contacted to any support actioned. Some specialist services
may attend the setting and observe the children in the nursery setting.
We can signpost parents to the local Children Centre who offer advice and guidance to parents on
various schemes and classes.
The SENCO OR Key Person can liaise with the Health Visitor and in conjunction with can refer a child
to specialist services. The setting is also in contact with Early Years Help/intervention who offer
advice and support to the setting and Parents on various issues.
What Training are the Staff supporting Children with SEND had or are having?
Management attend SEN workshops and training courses provided by Wolverhampton early Help
service who will then pass on any new learning, legislation and knowledge to other staff members
through coaching and staff meetings.
If staff require specialist training identified in a risk assessment then specialised training can be
arranged.
How will my child be included in activities outside the classroom including
school trips?
The setting organises trips to the Local Park, library, shops etc. A risk assessment is carried out to
ensure there is access for each child. Additional staff is included if a requirement is identified
through the risk assessment. Parents are sometimes invited to join us as additional helpers.
How accessible is the settings environment?
Doors are wheelchair accessible
The toddler room and Pre-school room including the garden are all on the ground level with no need
for ramps. No steps with smooth accessible surface.
If access needed to our upstairs baby suite or sensory room is required there is lift access.
How will the setting prepare and support my child to join the setting, transfer
to a new setting or the next stage of education or life?
A meeting can be arranged with the Key Person and parents to discuss the individual needs of their
child.
Information will be gathered through a variety of means, child’s Learning Journey, nursery reports,
professional’s reports and discussion with parents.
The settling in process often begins with a visit to the nursery by a parent/carer. Once a place has
been offered to a parent, they are encouraged to visit with their child and are taken through a short
induction process with a senior member of staff or potential key person, during this induction the
settling-in period is discussed. As all children are individuals the settling in process can vary
depending on the individual needs of the child and family. The settling-in period is intended to
bridge the gap for the child between home and nursery. It should help them to become accustomed
to the nursery and form an attachment with their key person, who will be with them for much of the
time.
It is suggested that each child has at least two settling in visits, but this can vary depending on the
need of the child, we offer flexibility if more it is felt is required.
How are the settings resources allocated and matched to children’s special
educational needs?
Once the needs of the child are established the setting may apply for double funding to be allocated
for 1:1 support if applicable and specific resources can be purchased to meet the needs of the child.
How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child
will receive?
A decision about the type of support needed will be based on discussions with parents, SENCO and
the Keyperson and the recommendations made by the relevant professionals.
An IAP (Targeted outcomes.) is designed to provide specific targets and Support which are reviewed
on a regular basis.
How are parents involved in the setting? How can l be involved?
Ymca City Tots Nursery believe parents play a vital role in helping their children enjoy their nursery
time. We work hard to promote a happy and harmonious relationship with both children and
parents as we recognise that the best childcare is achieved through close co-operation with the
family. A successful partnership with parents is based on the exchange of information, knowledge
and expertise, we will endeavour to achieve this through:-
Assigning each child in our care a Key Person and our aim is to build trusting and supportive
relationships between not only your child and us, but also with the parent.
Our staff will at all times be willing to discuss your child’s activities, achievements, and contributions
throughout their time at nursery. (Giving Dailey feedback.) Parents should feel free to discuss any
concerns they may have with either their Key Person or the Nursery Manager.
Ymca City Tots holds parent consultation week once every term for all parents to attend to discuss
their child’s development.
Parents have access to their child’s written development records, observations, learning journeys
and evidence books.
We discuss with parents how our setting is run and discuss all policies and procedures that we abide
by. (At induction.) Copies of policies can be accessed by parents if they wish to see them, but a
simplified version is given to parents at induction and the initial show round. e.g. complaints
procedures, medication, confidentiality and Safeguarding
Planning for each age group is displayed in each base room for parents to view and parents are
welcome to contribute home experiences.
We invite comments and suggestions on all aspects of the nursery as we value parent’s opinions and
endeavour to act on them. A suggestion box is available for all parents to write down their views and
comments.
We produce an annual questionnaire which we encourage all parents to complete anonymously,
setting out any issues they were particularly pleased with or any areas that they wish they feel we
can improve. Results are collated and then displayed.
An open door policy welcomes parents to spend time speaking to staff about any issues regarding
equipment, menus, health & safety, curriculum, policies, procedures, care, staffing, staff training,
fundraising, etc. issues of a personal nature will be treated as confidential.
We continually seek to improve the quality of our service and the Nursery environment; we will
endeavour to be responsive to requests and suggestions where possible.
Parents are invited to family activity sessions or invited to volunteer their skills within the Nursery.
