Our Very Own...

September 2011

Volume 3 Issue 1

In this world, people often are

remembered for their deeds

and places for their landmarks.

CIT, long defined by the

sprawling hallways of its main

hall and the red bricks which

house its many labs, has a new

landmark to boast of - a white

arch towering majestically at

its entrance, standing tall as a

gateway to this place of wis-

dom.

The arch was the tribute by the

batch of 1982-86 to its Alma

Mater. It was inaugurated on

the 23rd of July as a part of the

25 reunion celebration of this

batch. The arch was inaugurat-

ed by the Collector of Coimbatore, Mr. M. Karunakaran

amidst much fanfare. The arch keeping in line with CITs tra-

dition was designed by its very own brilliant minds much like

the other buildings on the

campus. It was indeed a

proud moment for these

men (the batch of 1982-

86) to see a structure

which they had helped

build stand tall in the

grounds of the college,

which had shaped their

lives.

Much like CIT itself, the arch combines new age ideas with

old fashioned efficiency and practicality. Standing over 15

feet tall at its highest point, it

has a humbling effect on

all those who pass under

it. It is an analogy to our

own journey through this

place: a journey which

we start in our first year,

fresh from the founda-

tions laid at school, a

journey where we slowly

but surely move towards

excellence, a learning

curve of huge propor-

tions. If you notice care-

fully, you will see that the

arch doesn’t end at the post

but rather continues beyond it, reminding us that our own

quest for knowledge does not end here but is catapulted to-

wards a higher plane.

Practically speaking, the arch provides a new vitality to the

entrance. A sight to behold, very different from the subdued

understated entrance that it replaced. Painted refreshingly

white, with bright lights on the undersides, it offers an aes-

thetically pleasing sight to the beholder. The guardhouse is a

welcome addition.

In this fast paced world, with all its rat races, it is commenda-

ble that the institution commands the gratitude of all those

who pass through its halls, gratitude enough to bring them

back after years and years to do something, to repay in part

the debt owed to this institution. To do something in thanks

for all the gifts bestowed: gifts of knowledge and wisdom, for

opening up new avenues of thought, avenues never before

dreamt of, offering opportunities found nowhere else and

above all for having given them a chance to discover them-

selves and choose their road ahead and carve out their own

destiny.

The arch is indeed a fitting tribute paid the batch to its men-

tor. For it was through these gates that they once walked in as

young inexperienced minds full of dreams and hopes; it was

here where their dreams were shaped and their lives were

given direction and it was here that they began to carve out

and shape themselves to become the men they now are.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES

ICNN~ 6-8, JULY ‘11

Coimbatore Institute of Technology has been conducting National and International conferences in all fields of Engineering

and Technology to provide an exposure to the faculty and students on the latest advancements. Initiatives like these make stu-

dents better equipped to face challenges on a global level and give room for the students to think beyond the realms of their text-

books. Keeping this in mind, three major International Conferences were conducted in CIT since the beginning of this academic

year.

International Conference on

“Nanoscience and Nanotech-

nology” was jointly organised

by Coimbatore Institute of

The placements for the academic year 2011-2012 began in the month of June with

Shapoorji Palonji Constructions Limited on June 18th. Then came core corporate giants

like Larsen and Toubro, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, ABB Limited; software dream

companies like Thought Works, Commvault, Informatica and from the management sec-

tor it was Mu Sigma. Other companies like Robert Bosch, Aricent Group also visited.

There was a peak in the placements during the month of August. We had Tata Consultan-

cy Services and Wipro as the bulk recruiters. Tata Consulting Engineers Limited, Akamai,

SourceBits, Global Scholar visited the campus for the first time and we expect many

more.

We achieved a century on 5th August 2011. As on 5th September the job-count touched a

height of 480. This year the placement statistics have surpassed all previous records by

achieving the fastest 400 jobs. This feat was possible because of the Placement Officers Dr.

Murugan, Dr. SivaSubramaniam and Dr. Rajesh Ranganathan, and the Placement Team.

The Placement Team consists of 38 Coordinators including three placement secretaries.

Football or Soccer is associated with passion, emotion, excitement and dedication. My passion

for the game developed when I started playing it in standard IX. The more I played the game,

the more interesting it became and soon I was obsessed with it. Football provides its fans a rush

of adrenalin like no other sport. The game unites fans from different regions and countries into

one mammoth force cheering their team or club for every victory and standing strong by them

during each setback. Unlike cricket, the game has a huge fan following in all the continents

especially in Europe. Football can be easily associated with life. Like the game, life is also load-

ed with victory, defeat, injury and most important of all the spirit to take things in a sportive

manner.

Sadly, India is ranked at the 158th position by FIFA, standing behind even countries like Nepal

and Madagascar. The sports club of CIT is working hard to achieve laurels in football. Our col-

lege football team is considered as one of the strongest teams in Coimbatore District. The team

won the district championship last year under the captaincy of Poonthamizh Kumaran. This

year the team is led by Ngaonii Pou and the team is shaping up well with players like Nige,

Zuala, Prem and Annamalai. It’s said “keep digging till you strike gold”; the team is putting up

everything it has got to win the championship again this year. Let’s hope for the best.

CLUB TALK

Page 4: CITizen 11

Directed by Steven Quale, this ultimate thriller is regarded

by critics as the best of the series. The 3D does put a shine on

the experience and the BRUTALITY remains intact. Keeping

with tradition, FD5 startled the viewers with a breathtaking

opening scene of a bridge collapsing and the protagonist saving

seven of his colleagues, thanks to his premonition, thereby

cheating Death’s plans. The film succeeds in raising a universal

sense of fear by launching death sequences under very conven-

tional circumstances. FD 5 has perfectly resolved all the minor

shortcomings of the previous FDs by including the logical pan-

orama of each accident.

This finale is such a shocker and will

make you revisit every previous film of

the franchise. To the faint-hearted and

weak-stomached people, it is prudent to stay away from FD5.

To all the horror-movie fans out there, this movie will become

your archetypal favourite and is guaranteed to keep you at the

edge of your seats.

After a long time a good story has come to the big screen

and the acting skills of Vikram has once again been proved.

Vikram has done a lot of homework to fit himself into the

role of the mentally challenged Krishna. The little Sarah has

caught many a people’s heart with her adorable expressions.

Together, they have cast a spell on the

viewers for even the toughest heart

will melt on seeing the love between

the father and daughter unfold in the

beautiful mountains of Avalanche.

The climax is indeed heart rending

and the exchange between the father and the daughter in the

court room strikes an emotional chord. Vijay, the director,

has given an excellent screenplay and G.V.P’s music is just

the icing on the cake. Last but not the least, Anushka, Amala

Paul and Nassar have done their jobs perfectly and of course

Santhanam delivers his typical dose of comedy. On the whole

it is a must watch.

People get to see Harry in action for one last

time in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part

2, the grave and the most easily satisfying of the series.

A long windup to the big finale, it is up to Harry and his

stalwart companions to find and destroy the remaining

four Horcruxes in order to destroy Voldemort. The reve-

lation about Snape, Harry’s long-time nemesis, lifts the

movie to its expressive high point.

The movie is tightly focused and somber and seems

drained of color, but the director can be forgiven for the

tone of the film considering the movie’s serious narra-

tive. Nearly every facet of the film is at a series-best: art

direction, costume, makeup, visual effects, music, sound

effects and acting. David Yates almost gets it right this

time.

in the muggle world!

"Bhari Laykh" in Konkani means

"simply superb", these 2 words best

describe Kovai Courtralam. Located

on the outskirts of Coimbatore, past

the noisy roads and polluted air,

Kovai Courtralam is a treat to the

eye with a view of cloud covered

mountains and lush greenery.

The glistening waters, the small fish

kissing the feet and the refreshing air

are all some of the things which

make KC an absolute fun stop! And

once you step behind the waterfall,

you get to see the serene beauty of nature from behind a

deluge of translucent and chill waters. Even if the mind

says "Come on we have to leave...Time's up" the heart

will still say "Jus Chill Mann".

The chill water running down the

spine, the gushing water hammering

your head, the fun of splashing wa-

Water Fight is just AWESOME.

Simply put, KC should top the list

for all out there who have been

You can’t help revisiting Hot Chocolate: the abode for American, Mexi-

This restaurant has mastered a winning formula which keeps our taste

buds always wanting for more. For one, you can’t go wrong if you con-

stantly seek to innovate. For another, with a lovely spread of chocolate-

filled pastries and cakes, you are forever assured a devoted chain of cus-

tomers. An insatiable craving for a good European cheese cake saw the

beginning of my tryst with hot chocolate. The big-hearted repertoire had

my mouth watering. The Board Walk Italian Chicken became an instant

favourite and the re-visits began soon after. Recently, the cafe introduced

its Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Food Festival menu. And like a

child in a candy shop, I found my eyes dancing over it.

Yet, another fan, has urged me to try out the baked creamy lasagne.

And, it feels great to know that I will be satisfied – yet again.

HOT CHOCOLATE ~ Simply Delicious!

‘12 Angry Men’ is a classic

black and white movie which

revolves around a dozen

men, a room, a table and a case of parricide! This movie

makes a person ponder on the nature of – ‘temperament’,

‘sympathy’, ‘ingenuousness’ and ‘ingenuity’. The film is an

adaptation of the teleplay of the same name by Reginald

Rose.

The jury comprising 12 men of varied professions is asked

to gather in a room and decide whether the accused is guilty

or not. The verdict swings between the life and death of an

18 year old lad. Henry Fonda’s witty way of persuading his

jury members to nod to his decision is truly phenomenal.

The quirks in the character of the dozen men have been

portrayed wonderfully. The drama that happens in that

room is enrapturing and you just don’t want it to end. One

can’t ask for better dialogue exchanges!!

The film bagged 13 awards, the notable ones being the

BAFTA award and the Gold Berlin Bear award and was

nominated for the Oscars.

After watching the movie, you are left wondering - “Why

wasn’t I in that room!?!”

12 ANGRY MEN

~A 1957 Block Buster

As I see it, villains are more important

than heroes. You can make any douche

bag act as a hero. All he needs to do is

maintain shiny white teeth and give a

big smile every time somebody points a

camera at him. Why do many films with

such perfect (?!) lead characters fail at

the box office as well as with movie

goers?? The reason is - Villains.

Everybody loves a challenge. You have

a basic urge in you to show others and

yourself that you have talent. It’s men-

tally exciting and nice to use your phy-

sique or brains once in a while. But

when your opponent uses none, the vic-

tory over him doesn’t excite you. It

makes you feel like "God why do I have

to fight with such a weakling??" This is

the case with most of the villains.

Let’s see what they have to offer

1) Bad Appearance: The villain is dirty.

He is very tall and big in most of the

cases and wears kilograms of gold and

crumpled clothes. Of course, nobody is

going to like such a person when they

have a fantastically dressed up, branded

denim clad gorgeous hero on screen.

2) A gang of hooligans: Villains are al-

ways surrounded by hooligans bigger

than him. Mr. Villain, aren't you man

enough? Can’t you look after yourself?

Shame on you Mr. Villain. Learn from

the hero that bravery is essential. Even if

you have 100 goons rushing at your ene-

my they will still get whooped with the

hero’s bare hands.

3) A tendency to assault girls: This is a

turn off.. Girls are pretty fragile. They

have to be handled with care , given gifts

and cuddled with.. The hero goes

through so much pain and suffering to

make a women fall for him. You on the

other hand simply kidnap her. Think

that’s going to improve TRP? Never.

4)Long Loud dialogues: I pay money to

watch you guys flex muscles at each

other and dodge bullets. I don’t have

time for your bravado and false promis-

es. Get on with it and start fighting.

Ultimately, Mr. Villain your condition

in the world of cinema is pathetic. No

matter how big, bad or ugly you are, you

will lose in the climax to the all know-

ing, loved and respected hero . He is

THE GUY. There is no one else. Your

goons won’t help you .You cannot get

the heroine to love you. So stop trying to

win. Find some other way. Turn a co-

median. You probably have a better

chance of getting hooked

up with the heroine's best

friend or her sister. Or

turn rational and find

better ways to attack the

hero. USE YOUR

BRAIN.
