INTRODUCTIONA Short Piece of HistoryThis document is a product of Junior Branch and CISV history. Through the last couple of years CISV has developed our educational content and materials in order to educate and inspire more people, in a better way, to act for a more just and peaceful world.

The Junior Branch Training Curriculum is the foundation for all trainings within the organization which in one way or another are in touch with Junior Branch. At the core of the curriculum you find four Junior Branch training goals with each four indicators. These goals and indicators were first created at the Writeshop in Newcastle in 2010 by the current International Junior Representatives. The original product contained three sets of goals with their own indicators. Each goal is aimed at a different type of Junior Branch volunteer: The JB Developer, the JB Doer and the JB Devotee.

During 2012 these 12 goals and 48 indicators were boiled down to only 4 goals and 16 indicators. This reduction was done after long discussion within the International Junior Branch Team for two main reasons. The first is the fact that Junior Branch is a global movement and all the people involved in Junior Branch are working towards the same goals, therefore the training goals and indicators should initially be the same for everyone. The second reason is a wish to follow the line of the rest of the organization. The people working on the curriculum have cooperated with the Education Department and have come to the conclusion of only having one set of goals and indicators.

This document is, like Junior Branch, constantly developing. Therefore the impact of this first edition will be evaluated in the beginning of 2014 and the curriculum will be updated.

As said above, the curriculum is a product of many Junior Branch experiences, which is why the content, hopefully, will seem familiar for its users.

Have fun using the curriculum when you designing your training!

HOW TO USE THE CURRICULUMThis curriculum is your wingman.

The training curriculum is relevant for anyone delivering a Junior Branch related training. The curriculum gives you an overview of how to structure your training and what content to cover.

The curriculum is mainly meant for Junior Branch trainings at the Regional Training Forums. But the sessions which are covered are relevant to any Junior Branch training, whether internationally, regionally, nationally and locally.

The content of the curriculum comes from the seven CISV basic elements, the topics covered in any CISV Training. Under each element there are a number of sessions, which are sub-topics, specifically created for JB trainings. Each session covers a number of indicators, from the JB Training Goals and Indicators. The indicators work as goals for the specific session.

The curriculum is built in three parts: 1) Introduction to the training goals and indicators, 2) fitting the training for your role profile and 3) session descriptions. We strongly encourage all trainers who will be using the curriculum to read it through before starting to plan your training. Get to know the training goals and role profiles and reflect on which indicators are more relevant to the specific training you are designing. Then have a look at which sessions cover those indicators and start developing your understanding of the specific sessions relevant to you. Each session is described briefly with their indicators and has suggested ideas on how you can customise it for your role profile.

Remember, the curriculum is made to support you. It is not a shake’n’bake cake, but a list of ingredients for your training. Feel free to play with it and mix’n’match your own training. And most importantly, give us your feedback at [email protected]. The curriculum is made for the trainers, so you are the expert on how to improve it to fit your needs.

Start playing!

ELEMENTS AND SESSIONSHere you can see what sessions each CISV basic element contains in the curriculum. Some sessions might be split into more during a training, depending on time slots, focus and target group. The sessions are not meant to come in a specific order, but there is some sort of progression throughout the flow. As a trainer you can decide how to fit the sessions with your schedule.

HOW? AIMING AT THE RIGHT PEOPLE

JB DeveloperJB DoerJB Discovery

Page 11: CISV Junior Branch Training Curriculum DRAFT

ROLE PROFILESJB DeveloperThe JB Developer is a highly involved JBer. The JB Developer is an educator and facilitator with great interest in Peace Education and Active Global Citizenship.

A JB Developer is a person who facilitates trainings for other JBers. The JB Developer has a good understanding of JB and CISV, our approach to education, how the organization works and what peace education is all about.

When giving a training to a group of JB Developers it is important to focus on their roles as educators, facilitators and project managers. The training should provide them with the tools and knowledge to be good leaders. Furthermore many of the JB Developers are looking for a better understanding of why we do what we do in CISV. Therefore it is a good idea to focus on the theoretical aspects of the different sessions and discuss not only the peace education, that we do in CISV, but peace education as a general concept, the different approaches and why we do it the way we do it.

ROLE PROFILESJB DoerThe JB Doer is a dedicated volunteer. The JB Doer is active in the local community and interested in doing projects with an impact.

A JB Doer does hands-on JB work. The JB Doer is often involved in national and local projects and activities. The JB Doer is experienced within JB, but has less experience with International JB and CISV International.

When giving a training to a group of JB Doers it is important to focus on how to improve the work that they do locally and nationally. Therefore it is a good idea to spend time on the importance of educational content in projects and activities, as well as how to manage projects and activities. The JB Doers often have to represent and present CISV to people, which makes it important to work their communication skills. Furthermore it is a good idea to introduce the JB Doers to the rest of the organization. This will help them develop an understanding of how they fit in and how their engagement is connected to the Statement of Educational Purpose and current strategic priorities.

ROLE PROFILESJB DiscoveryWhen going on a JB Discovery you are starting from scratch. The JB Discovery is about getting the basics straight, about understanding what it is all about and get ready to volunteer for Junior Branch and CISV.

JB Discovery are people who are interested in getting involved in JB work. This group is familiar with CISV and JB, but has little experience of being involved with volunteer work in the organization.

When giving a training to this group it is important to focus on getting the basics right. The training should serve as a foundation for the trainees further involvement in JB and CISV. Spend time on introducing the essentials of JB and JBs goals, together with the history of JB. Furthermore it is a good idea to spend time on emphasising the link between JB and peace education, as well as the possibilities within JB. Finally the training should be an appetiser for getting involved with JB.
