Project Management Club News
Thanks to excellent leadership by Stacey Miller and Nathan Bost, the Project Management Club
has grown its membership list from 3 returning students to a current 23 active members!
PMC’s main fundraiser this semester has been to raise money for the Haiti relief efforts. To
date, a penny drive has raised $30 of spare change and the students are making a final push to
raise $100. The first guest speaker of the Spring Semester was Jim Banks, VP of Product As-
surance for ECR Software Corporation who spoke on the Tools, Tips and Trip-ups of Project
Management. The club has held two social events. The first was at Boone Bowling Center and
our second was at Char for Trivia Night where we won second place. Next on the club’s agenda
is a visit to our parent organization, Project Management Institute, in Charlotte on April 13th.
The club’s final formal meeting of the semester will be held at 6:30pm in the 4th Floor Faculty
Lounge, Raley Hall on April 21st with Jim Rufo as its guest speaker. Jim is Executive Director
of Advanced Green Energy Services (AGES) Company and has over three decades of related
experience and formal education in the energy construction industry.
Two teams of PMC members generously sponsored by the Metrolina Chapter of the Project
Management Institute and the Walker College of Business recently competed in the Inaugural
Intercollegiate Project Management Triathlon hosted by Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA
on March 26-28. The teams took 4th place in the Team events and Ryan Morton placed 4th in
the Individual Quiz Bowl. Well done!
AITP News
Volume 2, Issue 2 Page 3 CIS CLUB NEWS
For the FOURTH consecutive year, our Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) student chapter won multi-
ple awards at the AITP National Collegiate Conference (NCC) in St. Louis! There were 678 attendees at this year’s conference,
including twelve students from ASU. Our students competed March 25 - March 28 at the AITP NCC against 68 other schools
from across the nation including Purdue, Iowa, Brigham Young, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, and Texas State.
Our chapter and members received the following awards at this year’s conference:
Student Papers Competition: FIRST PLACE (and $200 prize) - Susie Fransen Susie's topic - "What Influences College Students to Use Linux?"
Student Papers Competition: THIRD PLACE (and $50 prize) - Myles McConkey Myles' topic - "Intrusion Detection Systems, Alert Analysis, and Future Impacts of HIPAA"
AITP National Faculty Advisor of the Year Award - Dr. Scott Hunsinger
Outstanding Student Chapter of the Year One of only four out of over 250 student chapters selected for this honor/TOP CHAPTER IN OUR REGION
Best Tech / Geek Video Contest: FIRST PLACE (and $100 Office Depot gift card) - Eric Herman
Best Tech / Geek Video Contest: FOURTH PLACE - Andrew Crenshaw
The ASU AITP student chapter received support from the Office of Student Research, Walker College of Business, the Computer
Information Systems Department, several alumni, and the local community (through our 4th Annual Silent Auction fundraiser,
which raised about $3,000), as the trip cost exceeded $11,000 this year. Grants, funding, and donations from these groups made
it possible for students to travel to the conference for a reasonable price.
AITP has set up multiple trips this academic year to companies such as Red Hat and Cisco Systems, and has brought companies
such as Google, TIAA-CREF, and Duke Energy on-campus to speak to our students. Other club activities have included a num-
ber of social events, philanthropy projects, career workshops, and an end-of semester ―Seniors’ Night‖ to honor our graduates.
Several ―big‖ upcoming trips are planned for AITP members and alumni:
July 29 – August 1, 2010 – DEFCON security conference – Las Vegas, NV
January 6 – 9, 2011 – International Consumer Electronics Show – Las Vegas, NV
March 24 – 27, 2011 – AITP National Collegiate Conference – Orlando, FL
If you would like more information about any of these trips or would be willing to serve as a guest speaker or set up a company
tour for our members, please contact Dr. Scott Hunsinger (faculty advisor) at [email protected].

―What I Am Up To‖
by Bryce Robinson, Fall 2007 Computer Information
Systems Graduate
I moved to Knoxville, TN in January and currently work
in Oak Ridge, TN for the Department of Energy. I am
working as a Contract Specialist for their Environmental
Acquisitions branch. Currently, I am working on a tempo-
rary assignment for the Energy Efficiency and Conserva-
tion Block Grant (EECBG) program that was created
under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
(ARRA). I am responsible for 110 grantees, who are cit-
ies, towns, or counties. I mostly help administer and
counsel these recipients. My office is responsible for over
850 of these type grants, whose awards range
between $250k and $2 million.
