CELEBrAtE Your BIrtHdAY & SAvE 50%Make this the year to celebrate your birthday in a very special way. If your birthday or that of your traveling companion falls within the dates of this trip, our tour operator, Travel Dynamics International, will extend a celebratory 50% off from one person’s listed cruise and land rates. For solo travelers who celebrate their birthday during the voyage, we are pleased to waive the single supplement and also offer a $500 rate reduction. Please note that this offer cannot be combined with any other offers.

Professor emeritus Alex Horne spent 32 years as an Ecological Engineer in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. His current work is providing solutions for controversial water supply and pollution problems in fresh and salty water worldwide. He wrote the popular undergraduate textbook, Limnology (the study of lakes, streams, and estuaries). This circumnavigation of Newfoundland will provide an intimate look at the sea surrounding the island. Prof. Horne will combine oceanography with fishing theory to tell the tragic history of the New England codfish industry and compare it with the ongoing tuna fishing disaster. He will also discuss the crisis of the world’s freshwater shortage and a new and innovative solution to global warming.

captain Alfred s. Mclaren, U.S. Navy (Ret.), Ph.D., is a world-class polar and deep sea explorer and scientist. He is a President Emeritus of The Explorers Club, and recipient of its Lowell Thomas Medal for Ocean Exploration. He is also a Director of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology at Texas A&M and Director and Senior Pilot of Sub Aviator Systems LLC’s revolutionary new Super Aviator submersible. Capt. McLaren is a veteran of more than 20 Cold War submarine operations, and his awards as a Cold War submarine captain include the Distinguished Service Medal and two Legions of Merit. Capt. McLaren is a very popular and frequent lecturer on Arctic trips, having lectured on more than a dozen. With graduate degrees from Cambridge University and the University of Colorado, his area of scientific research is the role of the Polar Regions in global climate change.

Dear UCLA Alumni and Friends,

One of the hemisphere’s most extraordinary places is found close to home. “New found isle,” “New found launde,” “Terra Nova,” “Terre Neuve,” however you refer to it, Newfoundland, Canada’s easternmost province and one of the world’s largest islands, is an often overlooked travel destination and still a largely untamed wilderness. Renowned for its rich history, glorious scenery, and abundant wildlife, Newfoundland is a unique region that rivals any setting. As the crossroads of two of the world’s largest ocean currents—the Arctic waters of the Labrador Current and the warm waters of the Gulf Stream—Newfoundland has been an important maritime center as far back as the early 1500s. Newfoundlanders are members of some of the oldest communities in the Americas; the island’s charming villages display the influences of Viking, French, Basque, Scottish, and Portuguese settlers. Humpback whales, dolphins, and millions of seabirds play amidst icebergs.

Sailing around the entirety of this amazing island aboard the elegant expedition cruiser, Clelia II, we will explore Newfoundland’s most magnificent sites. Two stops in Labrador are also planned. Included are the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, home to the largest colony of puffins in North America; L’Anse aux Meadows, the first European settlement in North America established by Vikings some 1,000 years ago; Gros Morne National Park, a geological and scenic wonderland and UNESCO World Heritage site; and the charming town of Placentia.

Our ship, the Clelia II, is ideally suited for this unique voyage. Accommodating only 100 guests in 50 spacious suites, and with elegant facilities, Clelia II can navigate with ease the fjord-like waterways and bays of Newfoundland and Labrador. Don’t miss this opportunity to discover the fabulous treasures of Newfoundland, Canada’s big island.

Sincerely,

Christel PailetDirector, Alumni Travel

P.S. To make this unique voyage even more attractive, please note that it is offered at rates that are substantially lower than the ship’s normal rates.

now more than ever, a cultural or an expedition voyage can be an antidote to these changing times, but we recognize the need for increased incentives. that is why for this exceptional voyage, our tour operator, travel Dynamics international, is offering unprecedented incentives, including rates that are substantially lower than our normal prices as well as waiving the single supplement for solo travelers. Lowering the prices, however, does not mean that we have compromised the quality and standards of our operation, or that we have taken away services and arrangements we normally include. the voyage prices still include the excursions and special shore events; transfers from the airport to the ship (and vice versa) are provided; wine is served with meals aboard; and the open-bar policy is continued. And the operating standards of our ships are among the highest in the industry. We urge you to take advantage of the lower prices and other incentives we are presenting. We will deliver to you an experience of a lifetime.

In an era of mega cruise ships that carry thousands of passengers, the Clelia II is a delightful alternative. More like a private yacht than a cruise ship, Clelia II accommodates only 100 guests in 50 suites. Clelia II’s limited guest capacity, fine facilities, and distinctive style of operation attract like-minded travelers who return again and again to enjoy its custom-crafted itineraries and a style of cruising that is rarely found today. More than just a cruise, each voyage provides a comprehensive experience that reveals the singular aspects of the destinations. Aboard, a sense of community and a spirit of camaraderie prevail.

All of Clelia II’s suites face outside, providing views of the sea and landscape. Several have a private balcony. There are expansive open deck areas and attractive lounges and other facilities, including a gym, spa, library, beauty salon, two lounges, a sun deck with Jacuzzi, and an outdoor

cafe. An elegant restaurant accommodates all guests in an open, unassigned seating. The cuisine is outstanding, and the overall service is efficient and friendly while unobtrusive. An elevator serves all decks. A resident physician attends a well-equipped infirmary.

Served by 65 seasoned officers and crew, Clelia II complies with the latest international safety regulations, including those of the U.S. Coast Guard, meets the requirements of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, and is outfitted with the most current navigational and communications technology.
