Sustainable business: Shared value in practice

The idea of enhancing business competitiveness, yet at the same time advancing the economic and social conditions in the communities in which the business operates, is the basis of the concept of shared value. This concept was first explored by Michael Porter and Mark Kramer. To illustrate the shared value benefits of adopting a more business sustainable focus in company strategy, we have looked at five major organisations in more detail to see what they are doing in this arena and importantly how both they and society in general are benefitting from adopting shared value principles. The companies that we looked at were General Electric, Nestl?, IBM, Unilever, Johnson & Johnson.

Professionalism, ethics and conduct

CIMA is committed to upholding the highest ethical and professional standards, and to maintaining public confidence in management accounting. All members and students are required to comply with the CIMA code of ethics and to adopt the fundamental principles to their working lives. CIMA has just produced a three minutes animation which explains the code and what you need to do when facing an ethical dilemma.

CIMA President visit to Centennial College

Earlier this month we are very delighted to have visited Centennial College, a new and independent member of the University of Hong Kong while CIMA President Mr Harold Baird is in town. In there we had a fruitful and enjoyable meeting with the college staff lead by Professor Joseph Yau who is a CIMA member and also greater supporter to the institute. Upon meeting adjourns the college team was sincere to take us a round trip of their new campus. CIMA Hong Kong would like to take this opportunity to wish Centennial College every best in their first intake of the Bachelor of Professional Accounting (Honours) programme commencing in September.

CPD networking seminar – Guardian Role of Professionals in Upholding Ethical Governance

On 19 April CIMA members were invited by the ICAC to attend a seminar at the ICAC building located in North Point. The speaker of the night, Ms Florence Au was able to analyse the problem of corruption from a legal perspective and share with members some practical tips in tackling ethical dilemmas facing accounting professionals. During the presentation there was an interactive video case which all participants enjoyed thoroughly.

Prior to the seminar a cocktail reception was held at the ICAC Exhibition Hall. The exhibition hall is not usually open to the public so it was a rare chance for members to have a look at displays of major cases since the ICAC's inception and learn more about the anti-corruption history of Hong Kong.

We were also very happy to see some CPA Australia and CMA Canada members able to participate the well attended night of over 120 participants. I’m sure we will have other networking events in the near future.
