II INDUSTRY ~lews Ciba expands transparent pigment offer Ciba Specialty Chemicals has acquired the perylene product line from Sun Chemical Corporation. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. With this purchase Ciba says that it is now able to offer cus- tomers all four transparent red pigment chemistries. "This acquisition will comple- ment our wide range of trans- parent red pigments. Perylene pigments fit in well with our existing product line of quinacridone, DPP and anthraquinone pigments. We now offer colour stylists a full range of creative and innova- tive effects," says Dr. Hermann Angerer, global head of Ciba Specialty Chemicals' Coating Effects Segment. According to Ciba Specialty Chemicals, it will continue to produce perylene pigments using the same raw materials, processes and production sites as Sun. These products will be marketed under the Ciba ® IRGAZIN ® tradename. Ciba also sees opportunities to develop this product line further. "Perylene pigments are widely used in automotive effect styling, frequently in combination with other trans- parent red pigments. Transparent shades are very popular and will continue to be a key colour area for the automotive industry," adds Hermann Angerer. The company says that the expansion is due to the market acceptance of its Total Bottle Cost Reduction TM pro- gramme. The additional capacity ensures rapid delivery of small lot colour master- batches, helps ensure colour matching in three days or less and improves good manufac- turing practices, which relates to the handling of food- and pharmaceutical-grade materials. Ampacet adds that it has also completed the installation of a tti-layer blow moulding machine to assist in bottle colour development projects. "This expansion doubles the size of the Heath facility," says Bob Fielding, senior vice-pres- ident and general manager, Ampacet North America. "We installed additional twin screw extruders to increase custom colour production capabilities and added space for our colour development laboratory and quality control equipment." According to Ampacet, the elements of the Total Bottle Cost Reduction programme include bottle construction, moulding process optimiza- tion and colour innovation. These help reduce total cost, speed time to market and improve sales of packaged consumer brands. Ampacet says that it is able to combine colour innovation with cost reduction, which gives packaging designers more creative freedom. Dead Sea Bromine Group says that projected sales during the first year of produc- tion are about $2 million and the market potential is estimat- ed at $30 million per year. According to the agreement, Dead Sea Bromine Group will receive the rights for the pro- duction and marketing of the flame retardant Brominated Polystyrene (FR 803) for engi- neering plastics. This will be for the world market and in return Dead Sea Bromine Group will pay annual royal- ties to the Japanese company. Asher Grinbaum, president and chief executive officer of Dead Sea Bromine Group says that the transaction is part of the company's global strategy of expanding its product mix through agreements with leading companies worldwide. This agreement is Dead Sea Bromine Group's third partner ship with a Japanese company.
