Reference: Cian Hughes I am joint year head of fourth year architecture and Cian Hughes is a student in the current academic year 2012/13. This year he has shown great progress in his design abilities and ability to think creatively. As a student he was hardworking, capable and diligent. He is very strong graphically and in his three dimensional computerised representation. He presented work on behalf of the class both to a RIAI forum and an education forum. He is excellent at explaining his design process to architects and non-architects alike. He always tackles new challenges with enthusiasm and is keen to learn new skills. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. Yours faithfully, Patrick Flynn, MA, BArch, MRIAI. Fourth Year Architecture

Re: Cian Hughes

Cian Hughes worked with this practice for 8 months in 2011/ 2012 as a year out student, having

completed his 3rd

year of architectural studies at the Dublin Institute of Technology, College of

Engineering and Built Environment, here in Ireland.

During his time with us he worked mainly on a large Residential Masterplan in the Dublin outer suburbs,

and was also involved in the bid preparation for the new Central Bank of Ireland headquarters and some

school projects.

· Residential Masterplan, Baldoyle, Fingal, County Dublin

HJ Lyons were commissioned to develop a Masterplan for inclusion in a Local Area Plan

compiled by Fingal County Council, as required by the County Development P;lan. The site

comprises circa 36 Ha of land immediately adjoining the new Balgriffen Luas rail station, and for

which Planning Permission was previously granted in respect of circa 2000 dwelling units and a

mixed use towncentre. Circa 85% of the Units were previously designed as apartments in multi-

storey configuration, with communal courtyard gardens and basement car parking.

In the new economic climate in Ireland, the anticipated demand is for individual family houses

with private gardens and surface car parking, Reconciling the local authority density

requirements with the perceived market, along with arriving at an economically achievable,

phased solution for the towncentre was our challenge in compiling the plan.

The design process involved multiple presentations to the local authorities and financial stakeholders,

from full masterplan iterations to individual house types, compilation of area and other numerical

schedules, urban framework and phasing diagrams, research into relevant precedents, and, critically,

convincing 3 dimensional imagery of the developing solutions.

Van Herk, De Klein, Schroeder & De Jong:

Worked as an intern from October 2011 to

December 2011.

Henry J Lyons: Worked as an intern from January

2012 to July 2012.

Competition: Currently part of a competition

group with three fellow students. Our aim is

to explore different ways of thinking about

our architecture through the use of different

competition briefs.

Model Making: Ability to work effi ciently and with a variety of materials to achieve a

desired aesthetic.

Photography: A keen interest in photography and an advanced knowledge of

the Adobe suute lets me alter and adapt images of models or 3d images to fi t my

presentation style

AutoCAD: From my various internships I have learned to work quickly and effi ciently

in CAD, producing material to meet deadlines.

3D Modeling: Skilled in Google Sketch-up, Kerkythea and familiar with 3ds max, with

a knowledge of the associated rendering programs.

BIM: Basic knowledge of Autodesk Revit. I used it for a housing project while

interning in Amsterdam.

(Left) My internship in Dublin focused on a large scale

residential project. I learned how to calculate densities

and population estimates for housing developments.

I also spent a lot of time working with the building

regulations in order to make to most effi cient use of

space while still providing the best quality of living.

(Above) These are some details I

worked on for a student housing

block in Amsterdam as part of my

internship.

It was interesting as it was my fi rst

insight into detailing. They thought

me how to think about what the

fi nished product will look like as I

design.

(Right) For my fi nal

project in second year

I was asked to look at

designing a marked

place using left overs

from the construction

industry. I chose to use

shipping containers

as they can be easily

converter.

The project was set in a

disadvantaged area and

so I devised a system

whereby the market

could be closed up at

night. It is placed over

water so that when

closed, the containers

can not be tampered

with.

(Left) During my year off I

also completed a competition

with two of my classmates.

It was to come up with an

alternative to a shopping

mall that would not focus on

commercial values.

We looked at the idea of an

indoor park and performance

space that would sit above a

bicycle hub for Dublin city.

(Right) My fi rst project of

third was to research an area

of inner city Dublin and design

something we thought they

could use. I picked a dance

studio as I felt it had a lot to

offer the community.

A long mirror is essential

in a dance studio so I used

perpendicular beams to give the

space a feeling of infi nity.

(Below) During third year, I was involved in a study of the

‘Rathaus’ typology in Northern Germany. It involved a

comprehensive study through drawings and models which we are

currently in the process of putting into a publication.

Our project was then to reinvent this typology in a modern

Germany. I used a plan that was divided by screen walls to

promote a community within the building and a facade of brick

screens that would pull apart to let in light, showing transparency

through the building while still maintaining some privacy.

(Below) As part of the thesis program, the Dublin School of Architecture have been looking at the theme, schools of thought, focusing on the use of architecture in education.

Our ! rst semester project in 4th year was to design an Educate Together secondary school. We were asked to challenge the current secondary school brief in Ireland so I decided to share the school with the community, with the ancillary functions of the school doubling as community spaces. I also looked at transformation within the building, allowing the building itself to change to meet community needs at the weekends.

(Above) Our second project was a student housing block. I took a metabolist approach, designing one e" cient apartment and stacking it within a thick protective wall. # is allowed me to create interesting spaces in the le$ over areas.
