President’s Farewell Message

How quickly the last two years have flown by, and now it is time for my Swan Song. It has been an honor and true privilege to serve as your President. Of the four years I have served as CHWC President, this one by far has proved the most challenging and difficult. I am humbled by the dedication and talents of so many women who volun-teered to make each event a rousing success. Together we have endeavored to provide you with the best of our mis-sion…. Companionship, Charity and Community. I offer my sincere thanks to all our Club members for their partici-pation and enthusiasm. Sharing this experience with you has been most rewarding.

One major accomplishment, started in the summer, was a revision of the Bylaws to meet governmental and current standards for a large organization. Chaired by Parliamentarian Joan with committee members Bette June, Mary Lou, Claire and myself, we la-bored over each item. The Board was invited to submit com-ments and the By Laws were approved by a membership vote in March. Thank you, ladies for putting us in good stead!

In Companionship, we’ve had wonderful trips to exciting places, and full busloads. Thanks to Mary Lou and her leaders and ap-prentices. Our Charity factor, the many fundraisers led by Mick-ey and Nina would not be possible without the many ladies who volunteered to Chair, Direct and Recruit a team of like-minded women to share their many talents and valuable time. Job Well Done!

For our Community component, I think of the Keep Citrus Warm effort led by Ileen and Sheri where your generous contributions of coats, blankets etc. truly did provide the warmth needed by so many. With Bombas’s generous donation of 2,500 pairs of socks, I had the privilege to de-liver them to 10 nonprofit organizations and see the appreciation

that such a simple donation could make.

Other successes were the new process for preparing nametags that now takes only 45 minutes to complete as opposed to hours spent handwriting all the information. Thanks to Dianne’s com-puter skills and Barbara and Myrta’s enthusiasm and great committee. Our Membership team of Elizabeth and Barb have made sure that all the personal information of members is handled in a secure and tech protected manner. We are grateful to you gals!

Normally I would go on to tout the accomplishments and high points we have achieved in the last two years, and there were many. Unfortunately, the corona virus struck our country and our county. With its arrival, we were forced to cancel our April Luncheon where we would recognize and laud the efforts of well over 100 volunteer members who gave generously of their time, tal-ents and dedication. With regret at losing the opportunity to fete these women, we sent written thank you notes to express our appreciation. The other casualty was the presentation of Charity funds to 9 very worthy nonprofit organizations. The checks totaling $9,000 will be mailed to the charities with our congratulations.

Our April Board Meeting was also a victim of the virus. No meetings of over 6 were permitted. Enter the tech revolution of ZOOM as our answer, conducting virtual meetings. Thanks to Mar-cia and Claire for tutoring the Board in this method. We held the meeting from our homes via computer and did quite well, a success shared by all.

Another dilemma cropped up; the election of officers mandated to be held at our April General Membership Meeting. Enter another tech solution, SURVEY MONKEY, thanks to Elizabeth who was very familiar with the program. Between Elizabeth constructing the survey, and Marta han-dling the eblast, 232 of our membership voted via computer and a few US mail to elect officers: President, Pat Crawley, 1

st Vice Presidents, Sally Smith and Mary Stansfield, 2

nd Vice

Presidents Dianne Joyner and Carol Peterman, Secretary, Marcia Porterfield and Pam Brink and Treasurer, Diane Edwards. Congratulations and best wishes ladies!

Further casualties of the virus were cancellations of our last two fundraisers, the spring Golf Scramble and the Military Card Party. The mandate by our Governor to stay safe at home until at least May 9

th has led the Board to err on the side of caution and safety, to cancel our last lunch-

eon meeting in May and the presentation of Scholarships. We will miss the presence of 15 out-standing students who will receive notes to wish them well and much success in college. Locally, $1000 will aid students at WTC in September. We also miss presenting our Waitstaff with yearend tips in person. They do much to meet our expectations at each meeting, but they too will be issued with checks mailed with our thanks.

This brings me to thoughts for the future of our Club. Will this virus still be with us in the fall? What will our Club do to ensure we can meet our goals and fulfill our mission? If the mandates of staying home and no large group meetings prevail, what will the Citrus Hills Women’s Club look like? Will we have virtual meetings via ZOOM? Will Survey Monkey become the means for Board meetings, to approve votes and other procedures? If no large gatherings, we will have no trips to offer. Our many fundraisers will not take place as before. Will we find alternate methods of securing funds for our Charities and Scholarships? How does the Citrus Hills Women’s Club remain relevant in this potential new world order? Hopefully, our elected officers and Board will figure out solutions to these issues and will approach the situation with the same determination, dedication and enthusiasm we are known for. Your continued support will be essential.

I wish to bid farewell on a more positive note! I have been blessed by your tremendous support and generous gift of friendship these past 2 years. I know you will provide the new Board with much the same thoughtfulness. I am very proud and thankful to have represented the CHWC, to work with such special women and to have perpetuated our commitment to Companionship,

Charity and Community! Hugs,

IN MEMORY OF RUTH FENTON October 5, 1921 - April 2, 2020

Ruth Fenton was born 10/5/21 in Lowell, Massachusetts and moved from New Jersey to Florida in 1979. She was an avid golfer and member of

the Citrus Hills Country Club and the Citrus Hills Golf Association. It is my belief that Ruth was one of the ladies who formed the Citrus Hills Wom-en's Club in 1986. She served as the fifth president of the club for two years - 1991/1992 and 1992/1993 and remained an active member until 2012. We shall always remember her as a very pretty, classy lady and a ray of sunshine for those who knew her. Bette June Egan

TRAVEL IN STYLE FASHION SHOW

On March 11th ,

Joanne LeBlanc & Phyllis Wood co-chaired the Citrus Hills Wom6n’s club fashion show for the benefit of the Scholarship and Charity fund.

The fashion show theme was “Travel in Style” with Betty’s Boutique in Hernando providing the fashions. There were many beautiful clothes that were travel appropriate as the fashions do not wrinkle and are wash and wear. Myrta Keelan wore a unique rain poncho; Nina Doran wore a lovely black evening dress that does not wrinkle. The other models were Brenda Huntsberry, Mickey Johnston, Joanne LeBlanc, Claudia Pesino, Honey Ragaglia, & Ileen Zavoda.

This fashion show luncheon was successful because of the wonderful Volunteers who helped with the table decorations, the baskets that were filled by the volunteers, tickets sold on the baskets and silent auction and money tree offerings. The decorating of the Hampton Room at Citrus Hills was super, from map globes for table décor to the lovely lighted screen behind the runway! Additional committee members who also helped with everything were Elizabeth D’Andrea, Kim Janssen, Jean Laird, Vicki Marchione, Ann Massey, Patricia Soper, Madonna Ray and Cynthia Williams, and Karen Settle who did a great job taking pho-tos.

The silent Auction donations consisted of a Pontoon boat trip, a show at

the Citrus Hills Activity Center, Golf for 4 from The Meadows or

Oaks golf course, 9-

holes on the Mead-

ows, and a ½ hour

lesson by Mary

Slinkard, 3 beautiful

Charities to Receive $9,000 in Monetary Donations

Page 8

Inasmuch as the April 8th

Luncheon was cancelled, we were unable to cele-brate the local charitable agencies who will be receiving monetary donations from CHWC this year as we had hoped. The funds provided to these agencies help to provide a magnitude of services for those individuals and families in Citrus Coun-ty who need assistance. The criteria used in picking organizations for donations each year are focused on charities that provide assistance to “women, children and families”. The chari-ties that have been chosen for this year by the Community & Charity Outreach Committee of Chair, Carol Peterman and committee members Nancy Kellow, Nina Doran, Mickey Johnson and Joan Matrosic are:

Carter Street Head Start School CASA of Citrus County

Citrus County Advocacy Center “Jesse’s Place” Community Food Bank of Citrus County Citrus County Family Resource Center

Citrus County Harvest, Inc. - “Citrus County Blessings” Citrus Fine Arts, Inc.,

Find- M’ Friend - 100 Scent Kits @ $3.00 each Voices for Children – Citrus County

We would also like to recognize and thank CHWC members who choose to bring food donations to our monthly luncheons for the Family Resource Center as well as items for the Humanitarians, and CASA. Thanks to the members who play bingo with the residents at Brookdale every Friday as well those who make blankets for, read to and have puppet shows for the little ones at Carter Street Head Start School. Many of you bring items for the children to monthly luncheons to help enhance their lives. The organizations and Carter Street Head Start School appreciate and thank you for these donations.

CHWC celebrates your generous giving throughout the year in providing items each month to the agencies, making a donation for a ticket to win a basket or at-tending an event as well as all the other ways you help by making a donation in any way. In addition, $16,000 was awarded to Scholarships to local high school and technical school students.

Scholarship Committee News

Page 9

The CHWC Scholarship Committee has been hard at work over the past several weeks to de-

termine which student applicants, from Citrus High School and Lecanto High School, to recom-

mend for this year’s $1,000 scholarship awards. All applicants were in the top 20% of their gradu-

ating class, and represented the high schools’ very best students, athletes, school leaders

and contributors to the well-being of our community.

The committee members, Pat Crawley, Bette June Egan, Ina Herzer, Nanette Mitchell, Di-anne Kohm, and Co-chairs, Claire Lindley and Marcia Schenker, met virtually using Zoom on March 26th to thoroughly discuss each applicant. At the end of a very long meeting, fifteen ac-complished students were chosen, recommended to the CHWC Board on March 31

st, and ap-

proved (also on Zoom!) for scholarships to begin their freshman year in the fall of 2020. These students were chosen based on their accomplishments, their often-compelling personal stories, their demonstrated financial need, their potential for future success and an overwhelmingly strong desire to become adults who contribute to both community and society at large. The Board also approved the recommendation to award students at Withlacoochee Technical College $1000 in scholarship money for the fall term. These students will be chosen by the school’s coun-seling staff.

All high school students were notified about their scholarships on April 3rd

. We have already re-ceived several notes of thanks and appreciation. Here is an excerpt from one of those:

“I want to thank all who were involved in the selection and organization of this scholarship! I’m very grateful to this organization for believing in me and helping me in the next step of my life— college! It is awesome to know that there are wonderful individuals and organizations in our commu-nity who want to help others who need it.”

A big thank you to everyone who has contributed to and worked hard to support the CHWC’s ability to award these scholarships through fund-raising and do-nations. Year to date, our Scholarship Donation Raffle has raised $1,890. The winner of the $100 raffle drawing in March was Mary Ann Maleno.

The April Scholarship winner was Paulette Castro.

The May Scholarship winner was Sally Smith.
