FROM OUR MINISTER

IMMANUEL

What is the secret of Christmas? What is the magicbehind the festivities at this time of the year? There are probably as many different answers tothese questions as the number of people asked. For Christians the answer is mostly, I hope, Jesus. He is the reason for the season.

Christmas is the season when God showed goodwillto all (wo)men in the birth of Jesus, who is alsocalled Immanuel, which means: God with us, or: Godis dwelling among us. It is the wonder of a God whochose to come to his creation as a tiny littlevulnerable baby. A story not found in any otherreligion because it is the story of a relational Godwho is closely involved.

I think that therefore Christmas is a story so close toour own heart. We can relate to it, because of thebaby Jesus. Because at one point, we were all a baby.It is easy, close-by, something we can understand. Itmight well be the time when unconsciously we findJesus most human. For as soon as his adult ministrybegins, the 'otherness' of Jesus becomes ever moreclear, creating a distance between him and us. He isthe Miracle Man, the Healer, God...

That otherness is highlighted at the end of his life inthe way in which he endures his suffering and furtherin his resurrection. No matter how great the hope wehave in him through his resurrection, for now itremains a mystery to us like no other. Something wecannot grasp or even begin to understand.

How can we live with the tension of the otherness ofGod who comes as a baby to live among us?How can we allow Jesus to grow up in our liveswithout losing the closeness that we feel with thebaby? How can we be real with the real Jesus? Havea personal relationship with him?

One important element in pondering these questionsis prayer. The way we talk with God. We cannot bepersonal with God if our prayers are not personal.

A helpful way of praying which involves ourpersonal lives is the Examen. This spiritual exercisefirst followed by St Ignatius of Loyola invites us toseek God in our everyday experiences.

To examine where we sensed God in our day and inour encounters with others. Or where we feel thatGod was not present, perhaps in some of our wordsor actions.

I was introduced to the Examen a few years ago andas I grew with it, have found it deeply enriching.Especially because it involves our feelings andemotions, raw and unpolished, and allows the love ofChrist to work in us.

Ruth Whitehead, our Synod Moderator, recentlyspoke about the Examen. She suggests an easyframework to follow:

"...use the letters of the alphabet for the 5 stages:

A... Become AWARE of the presence of God.

B... Look BACK on the day with gratitude

C... Pay CLOSE attention to your emotions

D... Choose one aspect of the DAY and pray fromthat

E... Look forward to tomorrow withEXPECTATION that God will be with you.

You can do the Examen in just a few moments, orspend longer on it..."

Someone described the Examen as sitting down withJesus and looking back over the day together. A trueexample of God with us. A God who is interested inevery detail of our lives and who in Jesusunderstands our joy and our sorrow. A God wholoves to come close and loves us to come close. May Immanuel be your peace and joy this Christmas.

Henriette

Dorothy Foale was born on 2nd. of April 1935 anddied on 18th. October 2019. She was a lady whoembraced life and appreciated everyone who sharedthat life with her. She was brought up with hersiblings Vera, Eileen and Joyce.

She was married to Sam Foale and became a devotedfamily woman, mother to Simon and Gerry, extending to include Naomi, Lydia, John andSammy. Dorothy was a sociable and friendly woman,a good neighbour who took part in many activities, croquet, bridge, reading, music , the theatre ,travelling. discovering her family history and beingpart of a book club

With her husband Sam she went to Singapore, enjoyed a cruise, visited with family who lived inCanada and locally explored Dartmoor.. WISDOM FROM A CHILD

When I told my children the story of how the Wise Men brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh forthe infant Jesus, my six-year-old daughter was not impressed. “Mum, a Wise Woman would have broughtnappies.”

FILM AND DISCUSSION

The film 'I Daniel Blake.' screened for responsivediscussion on Sunday 10th November at 5pm told thestory of a 59-year-old- widowed carpenter who mustrely on welfare after a recent heart attack leaves himunable to work. However, despite his Doctor'sdiagnosis, the welfare system deny benefits and tellhim to return to his job.

As Daniel navigates his way through an agonizingappeal process, he begins to develop a strong bondwith a destitute, single mother who is struggling totake care of her two children.

It was through their experience that we came face toface with what it means to be in poverty in our owncountry, and as a result of our discussion felt wewanted to do something tangible to at least identifywith their plight.

Our thoughts went to our December 8th annualservice in mind, when toys are donated to TheSalvation Army for distribution via social Services, and food, toiletries and warm clothing are donated tothe homeless via The Shekinah Mission, it wasagreed to find out more from Salvation Army See hisrelpy below

Mary McFarlane

TOY SERVICE DECEMBER 8TH

The toys we collect will be distributed by theSalvation Army with the help of Captain Andy Toby, who was delighted to have been contacted and reinforce the importance of giving toys.

He advised the following approach:

"Imagine you are a grandma or a grandpa, and youwant to give a gift to your grandchild - a littlesomething to be opened up on Christmas morning.Take into account ages from 1-16 … thinking of atoy car, dolly right up to a board game. OK you willnot change the world - but you will bring a smile tothe face of the child…. that is what is so wonderful -the smiles."

So here is the challenge - be a surrogate granny/grandpa through your giving this season - and maywe be blessed with smiles - 'one and all.'

Thank you Mary McFarlane.

LONELINESS

It’s gonna be a lonely Christmas’. The pressure tohave fun with friends and family is real over theChristmas period. In fact, over nine million peoplein the UK say they’re always or often lonely. (RedCross).

When Mary became pregnant with Jesus, sheprobably felt very alone. Her situation would be seenas scandalous, as few believed that she was pregnantby the Holy Spirit! Yet, God was with her: ‘‘Thevirgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and theywill call His name Immanuel’ (which means, ‘Godwith us’). (Matthew 1:23).

The true meaning of Christmas is that Jesus Christcame down from heaven to be with us. Theseparation we may feel from others is nothingcompared to the distance that God has already gonefor us.

Here are 5 tips for helping those who are lonely:

Take time to talk this Christmas, at the supermarket, pub or on a walk. Just saying hello can make a bigdifference to someone who’s lonely.

Give someone a call - speak to friends and familythat you won’t be with this Christmas. A short phonecall can have a big impact.

Give a neighbour a card. Ring the doorbell and giveyour neighbour a Christmas card. Start a conversationand make a connection.

Hosting a Christmas party or meal? If you knowsomebody who might be alone, invite them to joinyou!

Pray for Others If you hear of someone who’s ontheir own, pray for them. Pray that God would showyou how to respond!

‘The most important thing I can tell you is that weare never alone when we know Christ.’ BillyGraham).

FOR TO US A CHILD IS BORN

‘For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, andthe government will be on his shoulders. And he willbe called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.' (Isaiah 9:6)

Wonderful Counsellor: He will give us the wisdomwe need, especially when we have difficult decisionsto make at work or home, or in dealing with ourfinances or future direction.

Mighty God: He will provide the help and strengthto face a difficult diagnosis, family crisis orrelationships breakdown, as we trust His plan andpurpose for our lives.

Everlasting Father: He cares for us as a Father caresfor His children, so that we can come to Him whenwe feel alone or we are really struggling, knowingthat He hears and will answer our prayers.

Prince of Peace: He has secured peace by His crossand resurrection, and so we can find in Him trueacceptance, forgiveness and peace for our lives, relationships and future.

Christmas is the time to celebrate a God who isfaithful to all His promises, ‘the zeal of the LordAlmighty will accomplish this' (7)

Rev Paul Hardingham

Dear friends,

On Dec 4 th we will be off to my brother and familyagain. Roger continues much the same with the usualhealth problems which are very regularly reviewedby the various Consultants looking after him.Thankfully his heart and kidneys are no worse and allthe other health problems are about the same,

Sandi, sadly has deteriorated as expected from herdementia. She now believes she is back in Belfast;.Roger is very grateful and sends his thanks for theprayers still included for them at Trinity.

My other news is about dear Nessa McCullough. She has had to have her eye removed due to a fastgrowing growth behind it causing her very severeheadaches. Unfortunately she was rushed intohospital before I could get her neighbour or Ministersphone numbers so I have no news of how she isdoing.

They were sending to a nursing home as sherequested, for respite care. I think Nessa will opt tomove into a nursing home if she likes it when in, aslife in her apartment is becoming difficult for her, plus she feels lonely. I will update when I have newsbut she is very grateful for the prayers said for her atTrinity still.

Our love and best wishes,Jill Law

NEW YEAR'S DAY WALK

We are at that time of year when everyone is busy with the run up to Christmas.

However, what happens after the presents are opened, the turkey eaten and the decorations are beginning tolook a bit tired?

We feel the need of something fresh and invigorating.

That's when a good walk in the country gets us going again.

The NEW YEAR'S DAY walk is on 1st January 2020. Once again I have arranged a lunch at The BurratorPub, Dousland for 12 noon followed by a walk from the Quarry car park at Burrator Reservoir starting about1.45pm - the route to be decided depending on the weather.

Tea and mince pies at my house afterwards The Cone, Meavy Lane, Yelverton around 3.00pm for those whoare less inclined to walk!

I have an expanding sitting room so come and join the 2020 NEW YEAR CELEBRATION WALK. Fiona Adams

EDUCATION THAT MAKES A REAL DIFFERENCE

Plymouth has been awarded the first CompassionateCity in England for those at the end of their lives orhave experienced loss. It comes after the city made acommitment to meet the objective set out in the Endof Life Compassionate Charter which provides aframework on social actions relating to death, dyingand loss.

The vision is that the city will not shy away from thetaboo subject of death, choosing to talk openly aboutit, in order to create an environment that is trulyinformed and compassionate towards those facingend of life or experiencing loss.

Back in May 2018 St Luke's Hospice hosted an eventabout what organisations could do in scenarios thatinvolve death. Schools, solicitors, places of worship,GP Surgeries and Plymouth City Council were somethat went along to learn about what they could do -realising afresh how end of life care is everyone'sresponsibility as we all have a practical role to play

On Tuesday 29th October 2019 , almost a year-and-a- half later, in the Guildhall, Plymouth City Counciland St Luke's Hospice showcased all the hard workour community has accomplished throughout the cityto support, care and 'do the little things' that make such a big difference, with the result that the Public

Health Palliative Care International awarded theaccolade.

Fiona Goodsell and I were invited with many othersfrom all sectors of the city to witness the event, andto hear from experiences within schools, workplaces,Care Homes and Dartmoor Prison.

It was a humbling experience, and as'Compassionate friends' - trained at St Luke'sEducation Unit, we were pleased that at Trinity thechurch meeting has agreed that in response to theCharter's objectives, a 'Drop -in' coffee time on the2nd and 4th Monday mornings meets as a'Compassionate Café'.

This facility 10am -12 noon is open to all; not only tothose experiencing specific loss, but as anopportunity to meet and greet people in whatevercircumstance. This is only a beginning in ourconcern for our community. May God guide andinspire all that is done.
