The Redwood creek watershed is located in the south end of Marin county and is an intact natural ecosystem home to both native vegetation, wildlife, and local residents. Muir Beach is close in proximity to downtown San Francisco and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the north bay. This plan will transform the site into an educational experience which enhances and restores the natural, physical, and cultural features of Muir Beach.

Muir Beach History

Muir Beach wasn’t always called Muir Beach, starting from 1910 the beach was called Bello Beach after Antonio Nunez Bello, a Portuguese settler who alledgedly bought the entire hillside for $10 gold piece.

Muir Beach as it has come to be called today was named after the famous naturalist and conservition-alist John Muir. Muir Woods and part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area were named in his honor as well. John Muir is the founder of both the National Park System and the Sierra Club. He worked hard to educate Americans about the value of the wilderness and inspired generations of wilderness advocates.

Wha ts i n a n am e?

Muir spent mch of his life contem-plating man’s relationship to nature. He concluded that all life forms have inherent significance and the right to exist. Humans , Muir decided , are no greater or lesser than other forms of life. He also realized how fragile

nature is and how human impact is slowly destroying all the beauty in the wilderness.

“Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.” John Muir

Program and ResearchThere are three main factors contributing to the habitat of the site in it’s current status. The Beach Boardwalk, the Beach Flats Community and the San Lorenzo River. Although the entire site is the 28 acre Beach Flats area, the focus is on the development of a community park in the eight acre parking lot located in the North East, adacent to the San Lorenzo River.

Blurring the boundaries space is like everyday life, the “screen on which society projects its light and its shadow

, its hollows and its planes, its power and its weekness.”

Master Plan

The aim in planning for this eight acre park was to provide a green space which brings all aspects of the site into one location. To give the Beach Flats Community a safe environment to enjoy with their families. To provide habitat for the salmon in the San Lorenzo River, and to create a place for visitors to relax and enjoy nature.

perspectives

The Theme of this park is to express movement in the land through the forms generated in the adjacent Beach Boardwalk. Grassy undulations as land sculpture have been designed to create a feeling of scale and movement found in the 100 year old Giant Dipper Roller Coaster. The use of artwork and colorful vegetation have been integrated into the design to contrast the stark concrete structures with life and color.
