Life’s Direction :

Principles vs Rules

What did Pharisees live by? Rules — Kolose 2:20-23

What did Jesus live by? Principles

(In fact, Jesus was disobedience to rules)

i.e. : Mat 9:14 (Fasting) ; John 8:3-5 (Stoning)

Page 4: Christian living

Why Pharisees Got All

Wrong?Law supposed to be principles, not rules

i.e : law of gravitation (hukum gravitasi)

2 Methods of

Studying Bible

2 Methods of

Finding Principles

Biblical Theology

By understanding how God deals with mankind, we

understand what to do with others

Biblical Text

By studying what the bible’s wants us to have in mind

before

Page 9: Christian living

Basis of Method:

kamu, sebab Aku kudus”

It is the duty of Christians to desire, and aim at, and press towards

perfection in grace and holiness. And therein we must study to conform

ourselves to the example of our heavenly Father. Surely more is to be

expected from the followers of Christ than from others; surely more will be found

in them than in others. Let us beg of God to enable us to prove ourselves His

children.

~Matthew Henry’s Commentary

their own good

Biblical Theology

Examples (2/2)

Downside :

If you don’t have good whole concept of Theology

(knowledge about God), it will bring you to something

extreme.

i.e. : always giving chance to people who had cheated

on you, without considering their repentance

Biblical Text’s

PrinciplesLearn historical background

(what happened to the writer, when was

it happened, etc)

— Commentaries

Study narrow context (what it meant at

time of writing)

— Before and after verses

Note subjects, predicates, and objects to

take it to a broad context

Conclude the timeless principles taken

from the text

Cross check (Is there any other biblical

references for the principle?)

Page 13: Christian living

Biblical Text’s

Examples (1/3)

Amsal 7:1 ; 4-5 ; 7

Amos 8:1-8 ; 11-14

Narrow Context — Bangsa Israel menindas orang miskin dan lemah maka terjadi kehausan

firman TUHAN

Broad Context — Bangsa (banyak orang) yang berbuat jahat mendapat hukuman

Prinsip : Jangan kompromi dengan cara dunia, meskipun pemikiran kita minoritas.

Berpihaklah dan hiduplah selalu berdasarkan kebenaran prinsip Allah

[1 Raja-raja 19:10 - Elia seorang diri meski orang Israel meninggalkan TUHAN]

pelayanan

Downside & Upside:

Diversity of principles taken from the same verse

Down : Some people can be extremists

Up : Every principle completes one another
